Shila’s 5-star review: Saw this reviewed on the front page of Yelp on May 20th, therefore, booked marked it for future reference. I got the 3 beef Tacos for $13 which was a little on the high side but really good. Our waitress was really patient with our party and had an awesome Aussie accent. Meals were prepped and issued in a timely manner. My tacos were nicely spiced. Dessert was nice cream sandwiches which were amazing. Yum -
Shila’s 4-star review: I found this on the way to another meet up event on the bus and book marked it for future reference on April 17, 2015 This place is within distance from where the record store is but yet it took embarassingly long to get here. The place has a flow of traffic from busy to slow, however, timing of service was consistent. You get 20% off on Tuesdays which was encouraging for some of my friends and I to get 2 - 5 mini's, a good way to try different varieties and and to get the passport book stamped. The ambiance reminds me of a college student union building in a plain school sort of way. It's what you make of it with the company that you hold. I had the butter chicken, chick pea patty, cod and cauliflower cheese. All of them were good with the exception of the cauliflower cheese that needed a bit more more spice to the patty. -
Shila’s 5-star review: I came here for a meet up of the food bloggers. Minorly irritated that we were instructed to arrive by the event organizer 30 minutes before our actual reservation. Had I had known the proper time than I would've had a chance to dress nicer for the establishment. I turned my Iron Madien shirt inside out which was passable enough. I was a bit hungry due to the late seating, therefore, I wasn't in the best mood when I arrived but the awesome company did help. They were really speedy with our meals. The portions were small and very $$. I Inspite of having two small servings of fried chicken I was still hungry. Speaking of fried chicken....it was one of the best fried chickens that I've had to date hence the need for two. Most fried chicken gets soft and soggy when cooled, however, this remained crispy throughout. I loved how there was dehydrated dill powder to go with the cream to finish the dish. The kale salad was okay. Not the best kale salad as that honour still goes to Acorn. I appreciate the intention, however, didn't see the point of having fried cauliflower in the dish as it did nothing to enhance. The beef was too rare that I choked on it. No fault of anyone. I was not used to eating meat that rare before. I ended up choking. Thankfully someone at the table was alert enough to realize what was going on and applied some immediate attention since I looked like I was going blue. I had the grapefruit dessert which tasted exactly like grapefruit...no sweetness. It was okay if you're into extreme grapefruit taste. Place is tiny so reservations are highly recommended. The place tries to come off as high class with a little mixture of geek dome here and there with Nintendo. They just need to focus being one or the other, Our waiter was supper chill and friendly. -
Shila’s 5-star review: This place literally just opened up today. Earlier this afternoon there was a line up that went 2 blocks down. I came back later with my meet up group after dessert to grab a burger. By then the pace was reasonably modest. It was still busy inside, however, not the clusterf*ck that it was earlier this afternoon. This was such a saving grace to make up for the terrible experience at the UYE at Cannibal Cafe (see review of that). There were some people in our Meet-Up group who are also part of Yelp Elite who were at the UYE the other day whom needed a re-do on the burger situation. For starters the place is small and the kitchen is smaller than at Cannibal Cafe but yet they managed to get everyone's order out in less than 10 minutes. This makes me believe that the 6 burgers to a grill excuse that they gave our party for the 90 minute wait (at Cannibal Cafe) was major horse sh*t. The service was so good here that it made me angrier about Cannibal Cafe the other day. I had the burger with sauteed mushrooms, rosemary mayo and onions. The burger was juicy and amazing. I ate the burger super fast. I inhaled it. This was a far better better than at Cannibal Cafe. To ad insult to injury on top of being the better burger, the price was cheaper. A single burger here was $8 without the side. At Cannibal Cafe it was $15 without the side. This place was so perfect upon first visit for all the right reasons that it made me angrier about the UYE situation. Shame on you cannibal cafe for such a horrible experience again, take a lesson from these guys. The lady at the cash til was super friendly but she was a little all over the place and kept forgetting to give me my receipt. P.S. I was aware that they were giving away free burgers this afternoon, however, I knew that it was going to be a gong show with freeloaders, therefore, we made it a point to come back to extend our Meet-Up experience (we went to dessert first, see that review). People are complaining 'cause they didn't get their FREE burger...shame on you. -
Shila’s 5-star review: Saw this reviewed on the front page of Yelp on April 13th and had to book mark it. I took the Food Bloggers Meet-Up Group that I am a part of here (I hosted the event) as well as invited some Yelp Elites whom I met at the first time at the last UYE to join. I appreciated how this was transit accessible for everyone coming from different directions. Huge plus that this was open within reasonable hours. Warning that this place is very tiny....like shoe box tiny. The line up may be intimidated but it is not that bad when you factor in the size of the place. I am very aware that there are some amazing dessert places in Japan, however, as I was told by another fellow Yelper, this is close as it will get in the city. Unlike most Asian dessert places, they actually accept credit cards which was a saving grace. The parfaits were around $8 which was cheaper than the 4 cups of shaved plain ice that I had a week prior. Almost insulting on the other place really. The parfait was beautifully arranged. I had the Green Tea flavored that had a layer of red beans. The banana parfait was amazing. What made it amazing what that they actually used banana flavored ice cream unlike other dessert places that just use vanilla ice cream with banana sauce. They went all the way. The same goes for the hedgehog parfait. The service was really fast. Our server was so polite and sweet. A far cry from what we experienced at icy bar. Just a warning that this place was hard to find 'cause there was nothing written on the outside of the building, no decor to stick out either. Thankfully I had the address on hand. There is a sign that says bubble tea, however, this is not a bubble tea house. -
Shila’s 3-star review: This was a last minute game day decision to come here with the rest of some private elite yelp party event that was happening just next door. After all the sweet dessert we wanted something a little more on the savory side for cheap. First off they are cash only. Most things are cheap, however, portions can be small and the bill can potentially add up, therefore, be mindful of this. Lots of seating. They do close at 2:30 pm and re-open at 5 pm for the dinner rush. I just had some simple skewers that were tasty. Beef was overly chewy, however, the chicken was great. Customer service was good. -
Shila’s 3-star review: I have been hearing a lot of things lately about this ice shaved frozen treat trend, therefore, when someone reviewed it on the front page of Yelp on March 27th it didn't take me long to get here, especially since I live relatively close by. I came here for a private yelp event (private as some of my yelp and meet up friends came here just an a whim). Lots of dessert choices, especially with fresh mango so naturally what did I get....mango! This place is a 45 minute walk from my house, therefore, walked it both ways to burn off the calories. Customer service was okay. Prices were were here, however, could be marginally better. Very small inside. I was disappointed 'cause the whole purpose of coming here was to get their famous pancakes which they were out of. You get a large mountain, 4 cups worth of just plain shaved ice to fixings. The rations don't match. It looks big, however, really you're eating a plate of shaved ice that you have to put sweet condensed milk on. Simon S. ended up stealing some of my shaved ice for his potted plant dessert, therefore, the frozen water didn't go to waste. The lychee jelly and almond jelly were flavorless. -
Shila’s 3-star review: I heard about this place as it was mentioned by Jason S. in a recent talk thread on March 10th and have book marked it ever since. Their tacos are $4 each which is the most I've ever had to pay for a single taco to date. I came here for a private event with some people from various meet up groups that I am a part of as well as some Yelp elite members who are my close friends for this awesome get together. Firstly the Tacos are way over priced for what they are at $4 each. They give the illusion that it is big by giving you a bigger tortilla with small portions in the middle. Meat inside was good, however, not as well marinated with flavor compared to other Mexican Eateries. Honestly it's best to go one block down to Sal Y.. The experience was great, customer service was fantastic, turn around was fast, however, the tacos are severely over-rated, especially for the price point. -
Shila’s 5-star review: I saw this reviewed on the front page of Yelp on May 17th and thought that it would be a perfect place for high tea. This review is weeks late, embarrassingly (apologies for letting this one slip for such a fantastic place). A group of us came a few weeks ago as part of a private Yelp event and some meet up crew. First off, I appreciate the location as it is off the beaten path which makes it quiet. The place is still easy to access. The decor is cozy and small, like your elegant English grandmother. Limited seating, therefore, for large parties you have to book at least a week in advance, especially if there are special requests and or dietary specifications. They don't have a lot of tea selection, however, what they do have is of higher quality compared to the other high tea places that I have been to. It's a family run business. Mom is in the back preparing the food. The sun is the waiter. They make you feel like one of your own. In fact they made all 13 of us feel like their adopted children the way they treated us with love. Hands down the ham and cheese french toast was amazing. I had the demi gluten free high tea. Prices are at par with other establishments. -
Shila’s 4-star review: I was unaware of this high tea place until it came on my radar recently by accident. My fellow yelper, good friend and mine and manager of one of the meet-up groups that I am a part of, Simon, found this place through a publication. This place is tucked away in a strip mall, therefore, there is not much walk in traffic. They don't publish their address on this page making it hard to search in the profile for them. This is a cute high tea place with lots of space and decent amount of seating. The menu for the high tea is very reasonable for the luxury tea set at $28. Most of the menu items are sea food orientated. I wasn't in the mood for a lot of sweets, therefore, I just went with a salmon salad for $7.50 and doubled my portion. The salad only had 5 - 6 small 1" by .5" pieces of thin salmon. Against the bed of salad that was soaking in dressing, it was hard to taste the salmon. It did fill me up and was a healthier option. Next time I will get the dressing on the side. I had caramel green tea which was awesome. I liked how the caramel was subtle. They had a nice side of rock sugar. Because they don't get a lot of walk in's you have to make a reservation 24 hours in advance as to save waste they don't have a lot of extras of stuff on hand. The menu does change every 3 months, therefore, I am looking forward to my next service. The lady who served us was very cute and polite. I just wanted to take her home in a box with a bow.....she was that cute. Thanks Simon for setting this up for us. I had an awesome time with everyone. P.S. The china is made with bone china and teddy bear spoons and small fork. -
Shila’s 5-star review: It was the company of this get together which meant a lot to me. One of the 3 major holiday parties that I am attending this year. I was fortunate to arrive early enough to be seated at the liveliest table. They say that like minded people find their way to each other like a magnet. We had so many people that it needed to be divided into 4 tables. It was dinner with one of the top chefs in China. I eat a fair bit of Chinese food, however, I will admit that this was the best Chinese I've ever had. Even better than some of the places in Richmond. The place itself is well lit like any other typical Chinese eatery with bright lights and white table clothes. It's actually a medium sized place that can hold a decent amount of patrons but looks smallish at first glance. The eatery itself is on the bottom of Denman (off the beaten path). You can easily access to the place via transit by getting off at Robson and Denman and walking down a few blocks heading toward to the water. The waitress was very bitchy for some reason. Two people politely asked for hot water and she acted as though she had a chip on her shoulder and was very snotty about it. Saying, "We don't have enough mugs." Really you have a full house and you can't find two mugs for hot water! It wasn't so much of the mug issue as it was about her attitude. I think our table hit a nerve by daring to ask for hot water god forbid. I got annoyed I commented, "Is there a problem?" Even though she was in the wrong I said, "Clearly we got off on the wrong foot, can my friend and I have a glass of hot water please?" Her response, "Yeah it's coming hang on (rudely)." This become the in joke with half the table. Mostly gluten free and no MSG. I appreciate how the chef uses different spices to flavor each dish so that you can tell each dish apart. Because this was a party this was a set menu. Cold duck = No flavor, too much fat around the edges. Not into cold meats in general. Deep Fried Silk Roll w/condensed milk dipping sauce = OMG this is like dessert and the dessert that should've been, simple, nothing fancy but hits the point. Deep Fried Spicy Tofu = I am not a tofu person, in fact I hate it. Although the middle was still bland it was complemented with a well spiced and crisp shell. Shanghai Fried Rice = The best friend rice I've ever had. I am not a huge fan of fried rice in general but this made me want more. It wasn't too oily which was appreciated. Spicy Chickem Breast = Tender, well spiced and very addicting. Lamb = OMG The best lamb dish I've ever had, I had 3 small helpings (with the permission of those at my table). Fermented rice balls in wine soup = This was our dessert which. It was very disappointing. I am all about the dessert. In fact I am all about trying new foods, however, this hit me in the wrong spot. I couldn't even finish my bite. -
Shila’s 4-star review: A Pizza making party was set up for us through a meet up group. It was really fun to make the pizzas. I even got creative with mine and made a happy face (pics to follow). Because it was a pizza making party you're bound to at least get flour on you, therefore, clearly for once my under dressed attire was more appropriate for this occasion. I guess when an event says, "Pizza Making" you can assume that you will get a little messy, therefore, common sense to leave nice-ish clothes at home. Dress casual yes, dressy...no. I had the gluten free one which was already pre-rolled 'cause GF flour in general is hard to work with. I did help out a fellow member roll out his crust :) Our host and kitchen instructor were awesome, friendly and I could tell that they love working with people in general. The salad could use a little improvement beyond the leafs and the dressing. Perhaps a sweet edge to balance it out. I had to bail early due to travel logistics, therefore, my pizza was half baked with very detailed instructions on the box to finish the rest at home. They even made an effort to ensure that I went home with a gluten free dessert. I managed to get the bus stop holding my pizza and dessert for dear life from the wind 'cause I was very adamant in getting it home in one piece. Our party wasn't that big to be honest, therefore, I was a little thrown off by the 18% mandatory tip. Unless the service was super stellar I don't pay that high. I budgeted just enough, tax and tip and brought EXACT change. Their high percentage mandatory tip irked me a bit. This is a very kid friendly place, therefore, if you're not a fan of kids running around which is the norm....this isn't the place for you. -
Shila’s 4-star review: I gave this place a second chance since I appreciated where they were going with this. This time I brought my best friend who is vegan/gluten free so that I could have a more professional pallet opinion. I did the mac and cheese again. Last time it was a bitter after taste blunder. This time it was really good. There was a more prominent mustard note which made this very addicting to eat. My best friend was also addicted. The stroganoff dish was also amazing. Both my best friend and I shared each bowl among each other. Service was friendly and prompt like last time. Prices of course are decent with the meal. We had dessert and felt that the berry crumble was a little dry still. Perhaps a little bit of coconut oil? Either way it was a good finish to the meal. Now that I know that their mac and cheese is as addicting as everyone says it is, I am going to chalk up my previous experience as a bad day in the kitchen. I would come back again for the vegan mac and cheese. -
Shila’s 3-star review: I came here as a social meet up (The group I am involved in). Finding the place was very hard as you have to look literally up. It is difficult for passers by. There is no real ambiance in terms of decor, therefore, you have to make it your own with the company you keep and have. Thankfully I was with an awesome group of people. I had Thupka: Tibetan style soup with spinach, mix vegetable, ginger, garlic, herbs, fresh coriander mixed with soft noodles. The soup didn't blow me away and the huge chunks of ginger and lemon grass threw me off a bit, however, it satisfied the tummy. For dessert I had the Chai tea creme brulee. I am a creme brulee whore. The combination of spices reminded me of a gingerbread latte. It was like Christmas in my mouth without the annoying relatives. I had a little bit of the Thai tea (I think that is what it was called). It was butter tea which tasted horrible. Think butter melted in tea. Sounds like a fat dudes dream :), however, it tasted like soap. It was really gross. Not even Harry Potter would want this. Service was decent. To be honest I didn't pay too much attention to the timing of everything 'cause I was engaged with the socializing with the group at the table. The prices were very decent for the neighborhood and what was ordered, however, was a little thrown off my the automatic tip that was added onto the bill that wasn't disclosed on their on-line or print menu at the restaurant. Even though the food didn't blow me away they still get 3 out of 5 stars based on service and for the awesome creme brulee. -
Shila’s 4-star review: Hidden away in a place in Gastown that one may not want to venture to unless on a mission or on a sunny day. This place has been on my bucket list for a while, therefore, when my friend Simon set up a brunch date with 6 other people...I was all in. I am the type of person that likes to have dessert as the main course, especially since I am on an eating plan in which I save my extra points for the weekend on fancy dessert. For my brunch main I had creme brule 'cause I am a creme brule whore. The creme brule for $8.50 was a generous portion with a deep dish. That alone filled me up. Crust was perfect and the creme texture was just right. For dessert I had Oranges in a Mint Caramel, Orange Blossom Sorbet. If you have a sweet tooth and want dessert, this is the best thing to get as it's very light and refreshing. Slice oranges marinated in mint caramel (not the caramel that you're thinking, trust me) was to die for. I wanted to drink the sauce off the plate, however, being a fancy place I just put it in my glass instead. Sauce this good doesn't deserve to be left behind. It was like a summer party in my mouth. I had a bit of the melting chocolate which melted in my mouth perfectly. It had a light, rich and rustic texture. The creme caramel, like flan was made to perfection as well. Here is the reason why I cannot give it 5 stars but don't want to be a jerk and give it 3 stars (3.5 is what it should have). Two of my biggest pet peeves in the customer service department was sadly met. I was slightly scolded and made to feel bad 'cause I didn't order properly the way that I should've. I found our waiter efficient, however, not sociable and appreciative of the fact that we enjoyed the food. I complimented the plating, taste etc. and a few times received no thank you's or even a smile. He did try to make up for it by explaining a certain dish but clearly it was his way or the high way. I appreciate more relaxed people friendly chefs. He also had an attitude of "it's my home and this is how it is going to go attitude". He denied my friend extra bacon. Instead of just saying, "sure no problem" and charging her for it, he just denied her. Then came the part of the bill. Whenever I'm in groups of 4 or more it's has always been separate billing. We asked to have the bill separated (I even expressed my annoyance when we were trying to divide the bill) but they said, "oh we just don't do that." I asked again and they replied "oh we never do that." This is the first time that I've ever heard of this in an eatery. 15 minutes and frustration was wasted as everyone had to take a few minutes to figure out their bill. A waste of time for us and the waiter who had to double check and count the cash since most of us paid by cash. I was so furious inside with the attitude that I paid with a $100 bill even though I had $20's and $10's with me. It was a bill that I was saving to use to pay my hydro, however, would rather pay with smaller denominations since I get less bill payment attitude from them than here. Come here but don't expect to make any modifications or be made to feel like a freak. I will give props to the decor that makes you feel elegant and creates an ambiance. The food selections were fair priced and within financial reach of most who want a nicer brunch. Portions were generous enough that you come out feeling satisfied or stuffed. Come for the food in pairs, not in groups (billing issue). Tip in accordance to the service and make sure that your server actually smiles and appreciates your presence. -
Shila’s 5-star review: I came here with my friend Simon for some catch up time. Location is a bit odd, however, it worked. They left most of the windows on which gets cold quick which was a little unpleasant even though they closed one of the windows near us. The coldness from the others was crawling in. Simon and I weren't the easiest customers since there was a bit of a misunderstanding about what dishes were or weren't gluten free. The waitress was super nice and accommodating even though she had no business being. The place is small and tall, therefore, seating is limited. We arrived at 6:30 and it slowly started getting packed. They have a mini grocery store of odd food items, many of which are pretentious but amusing. We looked at it like a museum. They forgot our entree, however, the waitress apologized which was acceptable. The time flew by since Simon was awesome company. Now onto the dishes....the mean reason why we were here. Sardines on Toast salad cream, celery & radish salad = $11 = The price was a bit pretentious. The dish was plated well. There were different textures involved from soft, creamy, crunchy and cold. I liked all those texture elements in my mouth. The radish and honey sauce was a good kick against the veggie garnishes. The sardines were basically invisible in terms of taste against the over powering sauce. I could tell that they were fresh just based on bite and texture but I tasted no distinguished flavor notes. They did make this on gluten free toast = plus points. Saffron Black Truffle Macaroni & Cheese gremolata, black truffle shavings, parmesan = $16 = One of the best mac and cheese dishes I've ever tasted. You get less than a cup of mac and cheese, however, it is a really rich dish. The cheese itself is flavorless and serves as a creamy texture vehicle. The real star of the dish was the truffle and saffron notes. They were unbalanced but it worked. Duck Leg Confit lentils du puy, sherry vinaigrette = $16 = Very moist and nicely salted. There were no real spices but just a buttery taste with salt. It balanced well with the basic lentil bed. Pavlova = $7 = Large meringue dish topped with whip cream and fresh berries. The meringue itself was nice and crispy on the outside and fluffy like a cloud on the inside. It was a light dessert. Paired against the flavorless whip cream it balanced a bit the cavity assault. This is for sharing 'cause the over indulgence in the sugar will and can make you sick. Paired with seasonal berries on top which balanced and complemented the tart and sweet. The entire dish came together with all the flavor notes. -
Shila’s 4-star review: The guy I am dating and I walked past this place on the way to French Made Bakery for the hot chocolate fest. It looked very pretty, girly and elegant...like a high tea should be. I went in and took a business card for a later booking. The lady was very friendly and informative which is why I did honor my promise and made a reservation shortly after. The location is not obvious and I walked by this place a few times, however, always missed it until the other day. Reading the other reviews prior, I was prepared to be spending a lot of calories since everything was so richly made. With that said I made sure that I did an extensive work out the day before with some toning which did nothing more than burn off one single cream puff. At first I was intimidated that this place would be too high for my budget for high tea given the decor and the elegance, however, was pleasantly surprised that it is a lot more reasonable than some of the other places I have been to. I am so glad that I found another high tea place close to my favorite record shop 'cause my constant alternative was Shaktea and their service and attitude are terrible (see other Yelp review). I am so glad that I had stumbled upon this pleasant replacement. This time, however, I came for a V-day tea with the lovely. The high tea will come later. It was nice and quiet and we were surrounded by classical music. The decor resembles that of the Queen's Tea Room meets your grandma's house. The decor matches yet mis-matches with a charm. It is a family owned business and at one point the family was sitting together in the back having dinner which was charming. The food was awesome and very tasty. -
Shila’s 3-star review: I came here for a B-day party for a fellow Elite Yelper and meet up group buddies. It was a large party of 23 consisting of yelpers and various meet up groups. The place is oddly spaced and somewhat small but they made it work for 23 people. Not everyone was able to sit together, however, we still managed within distance so that everyone could socialize and be a part of the conversation. Customer service was excellent. They went above and beyond for our party. The portions are huge for the price. Carb overload, however, plenty for left overs. The music was a bit loud, therefore, there were moments in which I was struggling to converse with new friends. Be careful. The waitress will offer if you want half rice and half salad instead of a full plate of rice, however, she will fail to mention that there is a $1 substitution charge. This was a bit weak. My stew was okay, a little bland in flavor. Perhaps a little more salt? Rice was bland and the dressing on the salad wasn't a lot. Persian tea was interesting. I liked the sugar cubes which resembled powdered sugar cubes vs. the standard grainy cubes were all accustomed to consuming with tea. Of course the saffron rose water ice cream was amazing. I had that as a starter. They ran out of Cream Brule at 7 pm on a Saturday which was odd. -
Shila’s 3-star review: I first saw this reviewed on the front page of yelp on May 18th book marked for future reference. Actually what sold me on this place was that someone posted soup for $2. I appreciate their slogan...affordable meets tasty. This place is a constructive hole in the wall that is a cheap fast joint. They weren't kidding when they meant home of the $7.95 pasta. The pasta was okay. I can make similar at home but it was all about the cheap. Customer service was cold, however, can't complain for $8. I came 3 minutes early to wait for my party and the lady at the till kept staring at me as if my short wait was inconvenient for them even though the place was empty as everyone was still at home sleeping off their hang over. I got the build your own special. They do have Gluten free pasta for an extra $2 which is reasonable. Portions are very large. Service was very fast. The salmon was a bit too salty that it threw all the other flavour profiles out of balance.
