kelly’s 3-star review:
Sunday morning, I wake up and clean the house. Since my husband and dog are both pretty messy and neither cleans up after himself, this takes several hours. Around 1:00, the husband wakes up while the dishwasher and clothes dryer are on, reporting a feeling of hunger. I, too, am hungry, from all the cleaning I've been doing, and the fact that I've forgotten to get my triple espresso yet.
For once, he isn't in the mood for an "Irish breakfast" and we can go somewhere which does not qualify as a cavernous Irish pub for "breakfast" (lunch).
We end up on the beyond-adorable Grand Avenue in South SF, and cruise by a multitude of what look to be sastisfactory breakfast/lunch establishments.
I'd sprained BOTH my ankles (at the same time, but that's another story; I'm very accident-prone if you hadn't noticed) hours earlier and we happened to find a spot right outside Cable Car Cafe, so that's where we went, since I couldn't really walk.
Here's the deal:
It was hot inside. Really, really hot. We were both sweating while we ate, and it was cool and cloudy outside. Minus 1 star.
The waitresses were okay, but the place DIDN'T ACCEPT CARDS. Minus 1 star.
The food was really good! I mean, it was typical diner food but the hash browns were crispy outside and creamy inside. (I decided to forgo my perpetual diet because I'd sprained my ankles. Feel free to comment on my logic.)
The music was fabulous, if you like to be reminded of junior high. Which I rather do like. Old-school Mariah Carey, Elton John, etc. that I couldn't help singing along with. The other star is missing because it's just a divey cafe that's too hot. That is all.
If you're in this neighborhood, it's worth a stop, but get some cash first!
