I left my Heart in SF
One of the best, if not the best, city to visit in the U.S. Just remember the quote from Mark Twain, "The coldest winter I've ever spent was a summer in San Francisco". Always carry a jacket.

Darrell’s 5-star review: Did you leave your heart in San Francisco? Tony Bennet wasn't the only one. There are so many great cities in the U.S. and I love visiting them all. This is one of my favorite if not my favorite. California large cities have a California feel to them. Not Frisco. It truely has a East Coast feel. The architecture gives you that feeling. The tightness and hustle bustle of it adds to that feeling. However, it has a western attitude, which, of course, is friendly; not the cold shoulder that you get on the east coast. On top of that, no other city can compare to it's geography. The climax is uniquely SF. Cold mornings and nights. Hot days with the ability to freeze your butt off if you're not prepared. I always tell people to always carry a jacket; yet they always come back and tell me that they had to buy one because they didn't take my warning seriously. Then the hills. These aren't hills. They are the steepest terrain you find any where in the middle of the city. Then the views. Just inside the city is amazing, but surrounding the city is more amazing. The bay and the ocean gives you an extremely scenic photo opportunity no matter which direction you look. The city is filled with great stores and great restaurants as well. There is so much to do here that no matter your length of stay, you will not have enough time to do it. I suggest you take the BART from either SF or Oakland airports, because they stop at those airports and have many stops inside the city. Parking is impossible and very very expensive. I'm not going to mention all the spots you need to go to since many of the Yelpers do a great job in giving you recommendations. I can't wait to come back. This city should be on your bucket list. After you visit, you will agree with me. -
Darrell’s 4-star review: Really the only way to get here is with a car. I didn't have trouble parking. The view of the Golden Gate bridge and the city of Fisco is worthy of a visit on its own. Most people want a higher vantage point making this a less crowded place to compete for parking and selfies with yourself only. -
Darrell’s 4-star review: Frisco is such a great city. The best in California if not the U.S. Given the hilly terrain and the small size of the city, I was amazed how large the park is. It is majestic and worthy of a visit. There are some much to see and do. I do recommend driving, but understand, parking will be a challenge particularly on the weekend. I wish I spent more than a day. Next time I visit this city, I will give more time to spend in this beautiful park. -
Darrell’s 4-star review: Being of Japanese descent, I love visiting anything Nippon in America. Of course, Frisco offers more Japanese themes than most North American cities. In the middle of Golden Gate Park is this hidden gem. Like most of the specialty areas in the park, you will have to pay to get in here. It is beautiful and nicely laid out. Many photo opportunities can be found. Parking is difficult as with any other area in the park. -
Darrell’s 4-star review: Since I'm half Japanese, I really like any area dedicated to them. SF has many Japanese immigrants so I'm not surprised to see a section of the city centered around their culture. Small in comparison to Chinatown, but a good place to explore all Nippon type shopping and restaurants. Little Tokyo in LA, I think is better, due to the fact it's bigger. But this is the nicer looking one. Not easily accessible from the BART, but a couple of city buses pass through here. I always visit this place when I come to the city. I will come back again. -
Darrell’s 4-star review: Ok, I haven't been to all sports venues, so by saying this is the 2nd best football stadium could be incorrect. But this is a great stadium nonetheless. I still feel Cowboy Stadium is the best one still. Meanwhile, I love the outdoor field and the stadium itself is beautifully constructed and laid out well. Sight lines are perfect and the seats are comfortable. I wish more concessions were available; other than that it offers a great environment to watch some pigskin action. I came for a College Bowl game in which my team's clock was cleaned out. I would like to come back to watch some 49er games. Hopefully, I will return. -
Darrell’s 4-star review: It's really difficult for me to find high quality Japanese home products. This store has authentic Japanese items. I found many items in here that I never seen anywhere else in the U.S. including Little Tokyo in LA. I wish they were closer to my home as I surely would have bought more stuff. -
Darrell’s 4-star review: If you come to Frisco, there are many must do places that you need to visit. This is one of those places. Situated in the park, there are so much to do. It's really best to have a car to get around, although parking it will be challenging. Your camera will have a workout if you visit the Presido. It is striking and just beautiful. An icon in a city that has many icons. -
Darrell’s 4-star review: They say that this is the largest Chinatown outside of China. I've been in the one in Toronto and Yokohama Japan. I think they are bigger. But, this one is huge. Go beyond the Chinatown Gate and you will find yourself outside of the U.S. It feels like you're in China. All Chinese signs. Many merchants cannot speak English or at least proper English. At times, you feel like you're in the movie, Groundhog Day, because each blocks looks the same with the same type of stores and same type of restaurants. But you ain't. There is so much to explore here. It is crowded due to its popularity. Even with that, you'll be glad you came and explored. -
Darrell’s 4-star review: In real estate, it's location, location, location. This place delivers on location. Just a block from Union Square, just a short walk to China town and several blocks from a Metro stop. The hotel itself was nice but small. The staff was friendly. At nights, they make you use your room key to enter the hotel. Price is high, but you're in the middle of the best city in the U.S., so deal with it. It's still cheaper than a NYC stay. When I come back to Frisco, I will consider coming back here due to its proximity and cleanliness. -
Darrell’s 4-star review: Where is the center of all activity in this great city? Well, it's here. It's a nice place to sit and observe the hustle and bustle of the Frisco activity. A great location for shops, restaurants and hotels. The walk is not too bad from the metro as well. The famous cable car passes through here and get you all the way to Fisherman's Wharf. My hotel was not too far from here. I intentionally reserved to stay in this area due to it's close proximity to great shops and restaurants. -
Darrell’s 3-star review: Any public transportation in a complex city is a good thing. The BART has been around for years and expanded. Because it has SF airport and Oakland airport on its line, it really makes it idea for travelers to take. Parking is difficult and expensive in SF. So the BART option is really a good one. I understand the frustration with price and time with the system. Having used the Washington D.C. metro system (which copied BART), I see the need of such system. Perhaps if I lived here, I wouldn't like the price. But as a visitor, it is the best way to go. Don't be influence by the bad reviews. It is safe and convinient. -
Darrell’s 3-star review: This BART station seems to be in the center of the city. Therefore, it seems like the most crowded. Located perfectly in the middle of Market Street are many shops and restaurants. This stop is the closes one to Union Square. -
Darrell’s 3-star review: I've seen many great Chinatown gates and while this one is good, it doesn't compare to some of the others. Having said that, what makes this different and neat is that it gives the appearance of a hidden Indian Jones entrance to a magical park of the city. Go beyond it, and enter into one of the largest Chinatown outside of China. This iconic gate is a symbol of the area behind it. -
Darrell’s 3-star review: Anything that isn't that overpriced overhyped under quality Starbucks is welcomed. Got my late night coffee here and sat at a table outside watching the night owls wander around the city. -
Darrell’s 3-star review: I love Daiso. So many where I live in the LA suburbs, so I knew what to expect coming in this one. Most Daiso I've been at is really clean and well organized. Not so much with this one. It had the look and feel of any other one dollar store. Too bad. But what you can find is all items $1.50 mostly with a Japanese theme. Need to buy some gifts before heading home? Then come here, it won't break your pocketbook. -
Darrell’s 3-star review: This place got such low ratings and I don't know why. I enjoyed the restaurant friendliness and I enjoyed the dim sum. While walking around Chinatown, I wanted to eat Chinese. Big surprise, huh? All the restaurants looked the same, but for some reason, I was drawn to this place. The wait was long, but they seem to move people fast. Once seated, the dim sum came fast with plenty of choices. The food was good too. Give it a try; don't think the low rating is merited. -
Darrell’s 1-star review: Turn around. Don't enter. I love expensive Steak houses and willing to pay extra for the quality. This place has a low rating for a high end place and it should. It sucked. The ratings need to be lower. The steak was chewy overcooked cowhide and expensive. The service to wait was terrible and the waiter server was equally bad. Come here if you want to spend a lot of money in SF, but don't come here to eat. You will not like it. -
Darrell’s 3-star review: This is a shop. If you like Ghiradelli, then this is the place to come. Many gift opportunities to bring home for chocolate lovers. -
Darrell’s 3-star review: When you come into Japantown, then you will come in the Japan Center. It compromises more than 75% of all the Japanese shops and restaurants. Divided into two separate malls, you will find many shops with purely Japanese products. Because I'm half Japanese, I can spend a whole lot of time here. For most folks, half a day will be all you need. Make sure you try Japanese food that isn't sushi too. -
Darrell’s 3-star review: If you can't read Japanese Kanji, then a lot of the books here will just be a passing curiosity for you. There are non-Japanese books here too, but not the selection you'll see in a Barnes and Noble. But don't walk past this shop. First of all, it's one of the nicest store in the mall, but more importantly, there are many Japanese trinkets that you can find here. That alone is worth an exploration. -

Darrell’s 3-star review: The first time I came here a few years ago, I thought it was an outstanding visit. This time, I thought it was good but not to the same level. This place is always crowded, which is a good sign and the atmosphere is loud and tight. The food is good, but not memorable. Located in the Sir Frances Drake and a block from Union Square. -

It's a nice place to sit and observe the hustle and bustle of the Frisco activity. A great location for shops, restaurants and hotels. The walk is not too bad from the metro as well. Darrell’s 1-star review: There's hundreds of reviews giving this place a very high rating. I don't get it. It's a dump. Don't get me wrong, I love dives, but the food must be good. The food was crap. I could have done a better job at home. The price was ok, but again with basic food, what is the deal with the high ratings? Don't bother.
