Andrea’s 5-star review: I've been back to Grub twice in the past month, and it's still my favourite spot on Main - if not all of Vancouver. Recently I've tried both rockfish and sole atop two variations of risotto (one with prawns and one with scallops). The fish has always been cooked to perfection and the risotto has been absolutely delicious! Both times I topped this off with a shared lemon brulee tart, quite sweet but really good. A main on its own was filling, and the dessert a stretch (but so darn irresistible). Also have tried the Tommy Collins and the Sangria, with the sangria being a standout. Great value for the $. -
Andrea’s 4-star review: Wonderful little french bistro. I came in with a group of 10 and they were great at accommodating us and making sure all of the food was well paced. I ordered a cocktail ($11), the trout main ($18) , and the strawberry dacquoise ($7) for dessert. Cocktail and trout were both excellent. Dessert was good but lacking a little je ne sais quoi. Overall, it seemed like a good value for money. I would definitely visit again. -
Andrea’s 4-star review: Looooooove this place!!! Came in around 2 on a Sunday and the place was hoppin' but we were able to get a seat right away. Food came out in under 10 mins - 2 baos and the japoyaki fries. This was enough food to feed 2 girls and came in at just under $20 with a soda on the side. Bao's were awesome! Super flavourful and not skimpy on ingredients. Japoyaki fries were a bit sweet for my liking but still good, and I'd definitely come back to try the kimchi fries. Overall this place was great and I look forward to coming back to try more menu items! -
Andrea’s 4-star review: Came back for happy hour, when they have a small selection of $4.50 beer and cocktails as well as $6.50 wine. Thanks to the recommendation of our friendly server I discovered the Hoyne Off the Grid Red Lager, which is now one of my new favourites! Tried the crab cake mini burgers and poutine. Burgers were ok but poutine was amazing, with a complex gravy and tons of cheese curds, my table agreed it was the best poutine we had tried in Vancouver! -
Andrea’s 4-star review: It was a beautiful afternoon in Gastown and my date and I were looking for a patio to soak up the sun. The Flying Pig fit the bill perfectly. My date had a bacon caesar and I regrettably had a beer. I only say regrettably because, while the beer was perfectly good, the caesar was amazing! It was super spicy, which I love though for some who can't tolerate spice I would advise to avoid this one! For food we split the pulled pork poutine and a caprese salad. Poutine was solid - not the best I've ever had (I've had a LOT of poutine), but still very good. Caprese salad was phenomenal though! I know you're probably thinking "but it's just salad", but it was really that good. They used a few different types of tomatoes and boccincinis, and everything was super fresh. Good sizes for the price point too! Service was average on this particular day (it was quite busy), but I will definitely be back. -
Andrea’s 5-star review: Best bang for your buck if you're looking for moderately priced yet high quality sushi in Vancouver. They have a nice variety of specialty rolls (in addition to the standards) that come beautifully presented and the oishii sushi is melt in your mouth delicious. I highly recommend the okonomiyaki (japanese pancake), which is the best I have had as of yet (and for a white girl, I eat okonomiyaki surprisingly often). Great spot for a date or a small group (I'd say 4 max) as the place is always busy and they do not accept reservations. Wait staff are super attentive too. -
Andrea’s 5-star review: I've always figured that pasta and pizza are two of the few foods that I can cook for myself decently, so I've tended to veer away from Italian restaurants. After paying a visit to Campagnolo, it seems I have been seriously depriving myself over the years! Loved the look of the restaurant which was warm and inviting, yet modern at the same time. There were several dishes on the menu I wanted to try, but ended up splitting the Crispy Ceci (chickpeas), Tagliatelle with pork ragu, and the Rigatoni with braised polderside duck. All the dishes were phenomenal. The crispy ceci very unexpected - in a good way. Both entrees were also delicious, and while my companions preferred the tagliatelle, I thought the rigatoni stole the show. I wish I had room for dessert. but sadly I was stuffed. Alas, I'll be back soon! My only complaint about this place is that it does not take reservations. My party of 4 had to wait an hour at 8pm on a Saturday for a table. Not a good option if you're starving, since it is somewhat awkwardly located (ie: in a sketchy area) and there's few alternatives within safe walking distance. -
Andrea’s 5-star review: 3 months have passed, and I've now been to Meet no less than 6 times. Over this time I've noticed a significant improvement in the quality of the food. I still highly recommend the Sweet Chili Cauliflower and Hot Chiggin' Things, but I will add The Amsterdam (veggie "meatballs" with sauerkraut), Portobello Burger, and Steamed Kale with Cashew Gravy to my "must try" list. I gave the french fries a second shot after my first (disappointing) experience, and I can say they are much much better now! Such a wonderful restaurant to have in my neighborhood! -
Andrea’s 5-star review: I heard rumors that this place had the best burger in Vancouver so I had to give it a try. It definitely lived up to the hype. Everything on the burger is made from scratch - bun, ketchup, patty - everything! The patty was perfectly seasoned and the bun was fluffy. I also tried some of the poutine that is topped with house smoked brisket. It was a really interesting spin on poutine, and I'd definitely have it again. There were lots of dishes on the menu that looked good, can't wait to come back and try them! -
Andrea’s 4-star review: I never visited the original Zipang, so I can't really compare this new incarnation to what it was before. That being said, I really enjoyed myself here. It is a spacious location (you won't be sitting on your fellow diner's laps - yay!), with attractive wood, rope, and brick details. Service was attentive, even on a busy Saturday night. They have a nice selection of beer and cocktails in the $5-7 range, which I found quite reasonable. I sampled a selection of their specialty sushi rolls, tuna tataki, sablefish, and a bacon and tofu salad. The fish was fresh, and overall everything was very good. The only miss was the Taiyaki dessert (those little fish shaped deep-fried filled pastries), which tasted a little too much like what was in the deep-fryer before it - the yuzu ice cream that accompanied it was delicious though! Food prices were totally affordable - dinner including drinks, dessert, and leftovers for lunch the next day ran me about $25-$30. Overall, an great spot that is on trend, without relying on gimmicks to overcompensate for its food (ahem... unlike it's competition across the street). -
Andrea’s 5-star review: Awesome experience here. I Made a reservation through Yelp which was quickly confirmed. Arrived and was promptly seated with a smile. Started with cocktails, which are $2 off on Thursday nights. Honestly cannot remember the names (2 of us sampled 3 of them between us), but they were all fruity and they were all delicious. The one that was made with Pisco was a favourite for both of us. For food, we opted for the kale with poached egg, calamari, and the lamb with gnocchi. The kale with the poached egg was a delicious starter and a good way to eat your veggies without ordering a typical salad. Calamari was ok, not bad but not phenomenal either so I wouldn't opt for it again. Lamb with gnocchi was absolutely awesome though - typically I'm not even a lamb fan but I would say this was a must try! I also really liked the space - the high ceilings and white walls make what is a narrow space seem much larger. I can't comment on the "garish" art (as another Yelper put it) on the walls as I was seated in the corner and did not notice it. It is quite loud though, so if you're sensitive to noise it's probably not the best spot for you. Service was very attentive throughout the meal. I'll definitely be back. -
Andrea’s 4-star review: I really, really like this place. Cozy and friendly atmosphere. Lots of beer on tap, plenty of cocktails to choose from, nice selection of shooters if you're feeling really ambitious. Food is surprisingly good. I can vouch for the mussels, poutine, steak bites, and strawberry spinach salad. Skip the pizza though - kind of blah. I took a friend here when she visited Vancouver and now she recommends it to all of her friends that come to the city. They're doing something right to leave that sort of lasting impression! -
Andrea’s 5-star review: Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm comfort food! Definitely one of my top 5 restaurants in Vancouver. Gooey cheese grillers and lobster bisque never disappoint and the french onion soup also delicious (although don't order it with the cheese grillers or you will have cheesy overload!). I don't care if it's a cold wet winter day, or a piping hot summer day - I'm always in the mood for Burgoo! -
Andrea’s 4-star review: I had to take a star off this place after trying their 3-course dinner special. I had the trout option, and I LOVE trout, but it was a disaster. Bland and somewhere in between breaded and fried yet soggy? Based on that meal alone I would give the place 2 stars, but everything else I've ever eaten here has been absolutely amazing! -
Andrea’s 4-star review: Mmmm I enjoyed this restaurant so much on my first visit, I came back again a week later! This is a super cute spot on Broadway, just off main. Small space but a great lively vibe, and very friendly employees. Both times I went there was a line to get in, so I'd definitely recommend making reservations. The cocktails are fantastic. One of my biggest pet-peeves is paying top dollar for not-great cocktails - these were definitely well worth the $10 as they were generously sized (many served in mason jars) and boozy. I've tried the Divino Inspiracion (cilantro, pineapple, pisco) which was an AMAZING combination if you're in the mood for something fruity. I also tried the Chilcano (ginger beer, pisco, bitters), which was solid. And, finally, the Margarita Patada (jalapeño-infused margarita, made with pisco that they infuse in house), which I can imagine would be a little shocking to the taste buds if you're not used to spice, but boy was it good - perhaps my favourite of the 3! Onto the food. The first time I visited I sampled probably 6 of the tapas, and the second time I was able to enjoy 4 courses from the dine out menu. Stand outs for me were definitely the Cangrejo Causa (chilled potato topped with crab, avocado, mango), mixto ceviche (ceviche with various seafood), and the pan con chicharron (pork belly sliders --- these were so good we ordered a second round). And, I'm still dreaming about the locuma white chocolate frozen torte they had featured on the dine out menu (seriously, it was soooo delicious, I ate the whole thing and I usually do not even like dessert!). The only thing I did not enjoy was the lomo saltado, my two fellow diners and I all thought it was too salty and sort of tasted like something you might get from the japanese wok place in the food court (sorry guys!!!). That being said the menu is very diverse and I'm looking forward to my next visit so I can try a few more new dishes! -
Andrea’s 4-star review: Love love loved this place! After living in California I've come to notice the dearth of decent Latin cuisine options in Vancouver. Baru certainly surpasses "decent" and makes it into the "fantastic" category. Started off the evening with a mojito, which was very good. Tried their dine out menu which featured the ceviche that all the Yelpers rave about (for good reason), Paella which was choked with chorizo and seafood and had a lovely fiery kick, and Orange Flan which was a nice light way to end the meal. Ambience is quite cute with lanterns and a very cozy atmosphere. This is a fantastic restaurant to take a date! Can't wait to go back! -
Andrea’s 4-star review: I've been here twice for lunch, and both times I've ordered the cranberry ginger french toast with warm berry compote. It is AMAZING. So good I don't think I could try anything else off the menu for fear it won't measure up. Try it, you won't regret it! They also make a really nice iced latte. The best kept secret about this place (shh... don't tell) is their quaint back patio. It is heated and secluded and gets great light on a sunny day! The perfect place for a zen brunch on a sunny day! -
Andrea’s 4-star review: There's nothing like polishing off a pitcher of sangria on Havana's patio on a hot summer day. Their pitchers are generous and the drinks strong (enough). Servers are always friendly too. Having visited a couple of times in the past and thought the food was pretty good, the last time I visited I was actually blown away. I had the tuna salad which was fantastic - fresh seared tuna, crisp greens, refreshing dressing. Maybe it was just because all of the ingredients were in season, but the flavours were really exceptional (and it's not very often that I get excited about salad). I'll have to come back again to enjoy the patio before the sun disappears! -
Andrea’s 4-star review: Trying to find the perfect place for a romantic anniversary dinner, I came across Les Faux Bourgeois. I called 4 days in advance for a reservation and got in, no problem. Once we arrived we were seated promptly and the service was attentive. Started out with some cocktails - a French Martini and an East Vangria. Both were delicious, I'd highly recommend either, but the French Martini was a stand out. As an appetizer we shared the Alsacienne Tarte, It was a puffed pastry tart with caramelized onion, lardons, crème fraîche and ricotta. It was quite good, but considering all the Yelp reviews that raved about it I was expecting a little more. I'm glad I tried it but next time I'll branch out and try a different appetizer. On to the mains, which were the stars of the night. I had the Canard Confit which was served on a warm salad of garlic potatoes, arugula, goat cheese and snap peas with port jus. The duck was delicious - crispy on the outside and moist on the inside - FANTASTIQUE! I was so glad I chose that dish. I also really enjoyed the bed of arugula that it was on - tastiest arugula ever. Not sure about the snap peas though, yes I like snap peas, but the flavour didn't complement the dish. My date ordered the Portobello Duchess, which was a portobello mushroom with sautéed mushrooms, duchess potatoes, and mixed greens. I tasted it and it was also very good, especially those potatoes! The portion sizes of the mains were quite large, but given there was a nice amount of greenery on each plate I was full but not stuffed, so there was room for dessert! We shared the passion fruit tart, it was a little on the sweet side but the passionfruit flavour was spot on. It was good, but next time I'll try the creme brûlée that everyone has been raving about. In total the meal came to $76 before tip - pretty reasonable, considering the quality of the food. All in all, a fantastic meal, so why the 4 stars? Honestly, I was a little put off by the attire of the staff. The waiters were wearing skate shoes and shorts with t-shirts that had skateboarding logos on them. The hostess was wearing shorts and just any old tank top. Given the atmosphere it would have been nice to have seen a little more effort in their attire. I'm not saying that they should have to wear white collared shirts or anything, but a pair of pants and something nicer than a logo-T would really help to improve appearances. Considering the setting it just seemed to be a mis-match - most of the patrons were dressed much better than the staff. -
Andrea’s 5-star review: I can't believe I've been living on Main St. for a year and a half and yesterday was my first time at the Cascade Room - I've been missing out! They've got an extensive list of interesting cocktails, all in the $8-10 range. I tried the El Diablo and a Bellini - both were delicious. Lots of bar snacks to choose from too. The pickle jar ($4) is literally the cutest little jar full of pickled veggies - tasty! And their polenta fries ($7) with mayo were some kind of wonderful!!! I am usually the biggest critic when it comes to service, but I have to say I was really impressed. The food arrived promptly, our waitress was super friendly, and our glasses were never empty - the way it should be! Pretty sure I'm going to be a regular - I can't wait to come back and try some more of those cocktails.
