Rachel’s 5-star review: I've been coming here since 1999 (11 years old) and I always get the chicken nachos. THEY ARE KILLER! Add the sweet chili sauce from the salsa bar to put it over the top! The prices are fantastic, the steak or chicken quesadilla is a great starter to split between you and a couple of friends. James, the owner is so nice, I feel like he's family. When I came home from college back in Oklahoma, I was so excited to get to see him and order some delicious food! Honestly, this place can not be beat for the best Mexican food (and I moved here from Texas...) on Earth. So delcious and the prices are spot on. Every person I've brought here raves about it! -
Rachel’s 3-star review: I love La Mediterranee. I've been going to la Mediterranee since 1999 and I love it. It's my favorite Middle Eastern restaurant in California. The food, especially the Middle Eastern Plate with the Pomegranate Chicken is to die for. I do wish they'd take the chickpeas out of the Chicken Cilicia and Spanakopita though. Luckily, my mom, after lots of trial and error is able to make everything on the middle eastern plate at home and I have her recipes so I make those dishes at home for a fraction of the cost. When I don't feel like cooking though, I go to La Mediterranee for those dishes. Just a suggestion - the Avgolemono and Fava bean soups aren't that great but the mushroom soup = heaven. Although the food is wonderful, the waitresses suck. (The busboys are good though) I can count on terrible service when I go there. It's just a given. They're too busy chatting between themselves to notice customers. I don't know how many times I've had to get up from the table to go find the waitress to say, "hey, we need the bill" or "here's my debit card" because they never come pick up the tab. I don't want to wait around for 20 minutes after my meal is finished for the waitress to finally come with the bill. Also, I hate having to wait 15 minutes to get a refill on my drink... just a water. I've only had one really bad experience (Jan. 2009) at La Mediterranee in 10 years so I can't say that it's terrible. I was sitting at the bar waiting for my to-go order (because I didn't want to put up with the crap waitresses that night) while my fiance stood next to me (lack of seating) and all of the sudden, a wine glass in the top rack somehow spontaeously combusts over my head and the head of the guy eating his dessert next to me. There was glass all over me, the floor, in the guy's dessert and wine. The waitress just said, "wow, that's never happened before" and she wisked the guy next to me's plate and wine glass away. She didn't replace his food (he had a substantial amount on his plate and his glass was full) She never apologized or anything. Me, the guy sitting next to me, and a busboy cleaned up the glass. It was ridiculous. Despite the terrible waitresses, I highly suggest La Mediterranee as their food is delicious - just get your food to go though. Great, delicious food - consistently bad service. 3.5 stars (yes, the service and wait staff brought the rating down that much.) -
Rachel’s 5-star review: Spicy Crab Crunch = food from the gods. Beef teriyaki no veggies is delicious! We always call in our order and they say "10 minutes" - when I get there 10 minutes later, I always end up waiting for 15 minutes. I wish they were open on Tuesdays! -
Rachel’s 4-star review: I'd like to start off by saying that the address listed is wrong. Maggiore is located on Walnut Blvd. between Armstrong Rd. and Eureka Ave. I live less than a mile away from the Cherry Ranch so I know that Balfour Rd. is not where it's at. Anyway, my husband and I went on Thursday to go pick up a few pounds of cherries for me to cook with. We did the whole U-Pick deal. That day, there were two types of cherries we could pick - Coral cherries, identified by the blue band painted on the trunk, which are a crisper, non-sweet cherry and Brooks cherries, identified by a yellow band painted on the trunk, which are softer and very sweet. The trees were heavy with sweet, ripe fruit and the trees are pruned so that the use of a ladder isn't necessary to pick fruit. There are ladders if you're just aching to get the cherries at the top of the tree, but pre-Memorial Day, there's enough fruit to pick at the bottom. My husband and I picked about 6 lbs of cherries in maybe 20 minutes so it's not a long, arduous process to pick fruit. Be prepared to sign a safety waiver saying you know climbing on ladders is inherently dangerous and should you fall to your death, the Ranch is not liable. Oh, and you can bring a drink with you into the cherry orchard so you don't overheat and pass out should you go in the hottest part of the day. Very good product and cheap prices = a cherry ranch worth going back to. -
Rachel’s 4-star review: BOMB chips and salsa. It's self serve so I usually gorge myself on limes and chips doused in salsa. (and lots of water) +1 star. Their caldo de pollo is decent, not the best, just decent. I LOVE that the chicken in the soup has the bones and skin on it in the soup. +1 star. Great service. Girl at the front is always friendly and the chef in the back always smiles at me. I've orded 1 meal for dine in, one to go. They made the to go order right when we were leaving so it was piping hot. +1 star. There are 3 TVs (all tuned into different spanish sports channels) and a juke box and it's always SUPER busy. It gets really loud. -1 star (but there area always lots of kids and babies there.) Used an Entertainment Book coupon for a buy one entree, get one free (this isn't the first time I've eaten there). For: 1 super nachos with beef 1 caldo de pollo All you can eat chips and salsa bar. $6.00 even after coupon. Um, hello. RIDICULOUSLY great deal. -
Rachel’s 5-star review: Went here last night with my fiance to look for a sweater or anything to keep our 3 lb. 1/2 Chihuahua 1/2 Dachshund mix warm when we go on walks. It's so hard to find clothes for a dog that's teacup sized (he's only 3 months old right now) and for a dog that's male. Every store we go to has pink explosion and no clothes for boys so this place was perfect. Lee, the owner, was helping somebody else for a long time so we spent a lot of time looking at the clothes - they're all very cute (and expensive compared to Petsmart or Walmart) but he has an amazing selection. My fiance wanted to get our dog a sweatshirt and that's what we ended up getting, along with two harnesses and a little stripped turtle neck to go under the harness. We got everything at a big discount and Lee even threw in a free elf doll for us. Oh, even though he knew we had a cat, he didn't try to sell us anything for her whatsoever. He was so helpful that we were there talking to him for more than an hour (it was late at night on a wed. so we were the only ones there.) Because he trains dogs, his advice about potty training, diet (we follow a raw food/ barf diet for our pets) and behavior when interacting with our cat was more than worth the money we spent at the store (About $70) He even helped us find some things such as a certain dog food and tooth brush that his store didn't carry and he was honest about dog booties - he told us to save our money even though his store sold them. That kind of honesty is what will keep me going back to that store. You can tell Lee is genuinely very passionate about his dogs and turned that passion into a money making venture - props for him. I don't think that he's passionate because he sells dog products, I think he's passionate about dogs so he sells dog products. We think the harnesses (which we got at a discount) were worth the money because I'd rather spend a little money upfront on preventive care instead of a fortune at a vet to try to save my dog's life from us not taking the best care we can possibly give him. -
Rachel’s 5-star review: I've driven past this place about 900 times when I'm on CA-4, but never had the opportunity to go. I got to go on Thursday and it was FABULOUS. The place smells divine from the parking lot. You can smell the hot grill filled with all sorts of meat being prepared. It makes your mouth water. Inside, there is a fabulous "cocina" that has 4+ gigantic copper kettles for making food. At the hot foods counter, I got the #13 on the menu, (not the to-go menu, the combination plate numbers are different for whatever reason.) It was a delicious beef stew that came with a side of corn tortillas, rice and beans topped with cotija cheese. It was heavenly. The meat was so tender and the fat was so buttery it melted in my mouth. This wasn't some crap mix that they reheated in a microwave - I fished out a cinnamon stick and a bay leaf out of my stew - so obviously they're making this stuff from scratch which is a 10000+++ in my book. My husband got the chicken fajita meal (which is the #13 on the to-go menu :-P) which tasted homemade. Very yummy. The only thing I didn't like was the papusa - just not my favorite combination of flavors. My husband also ordered two chicken taquitos which were yummy and a big container of pineapple juice. It came out to about $20.16 for all of that food, which, is a bit pricey but it was SO worth it. This place is really clean and the service is helpful and friendly. I ended up buying a ton of meat from the meat counter - something I never do. I got 1 lb of chicken hearts, 1 lb of chicken livers and 1 lb of chicken gizzards for less than $4! (I make my dogs and cats food from this) I also bought ground beef and a bunch of different steaks (since my husband won't eat anything but beef at home *_* ) The guy at the counter was extra helpful and very knowledgeable. One issue I ran into was at the cheese counter. There was a sample available of a cheese that I don't remember the name of. I asked the girl at the counter "does this cheese melt well?" because I was planning on making tacos for a guest who was visiting for the night. She had no idea what I was asking because she didn't speak English. She brought another girl over to answer my question and she didn't know what "melt" meant because I'm assuming she also didn't speak English. Finally, they brought a third girl over and she told me it was grainy and really isn't very good for melting. I felt like a jerk just for asking about the cheese since they couldn't understand me, but at the same time, this is kind of a problem. I understand that this is a Hispanic food store, but I saw people of all races shopping there, and we are in the US where the common language is English. Asking if a cheese is good for melting would seem like something people at a cheese counter should be able to understand and at least give a yes or no answer to. Now, onto the bakery. They had rolls that smelled like buttered heaven. I didn't buy any but the smell was so tempting. They also sell wonderful tortilla chips - we picked up a bag that was 1/3 filled with green jalapeno infused tortilla chips and 2/3 filled with regular homemade tortilla chips. So good. The produce looks great and is way better than Costco and Safeway. If you're looking for specialty ingredients such as aloe vera leaves, cacti, dried bulk hibiscus flowers, etc. COME HERE. They have it all. Oh, another thing. Don't look for organic products (I think it's a toss up whether they are or not since there are no signs) or non-Hispanic spices (such as Sage - it's not there.) Also, they only sell 2 brands of butter and about 10 different types of margarine which makes me sad :( We ended up picking up 1/4 lb of yummy pico de gallo, 1/4 lb salsa de rejo (a liquid red sauce) and 1/4 lb guacamole. It was pretty expensive :( I just didn't have the time to make them from scratch because our guest was going to be arriving an hour after we left the check stand line. When I got home, I started making the tacos. I grilled chicken and the ground beef with my usual homemade recipe of seasoning and my husband and his guest raved about the tacos. Honestly, I think it's because the beef was excellent quality. So yummy. Not including our meal from the hot counter that we ate at the store, our basket full of meat and produce and the prepared sauces only cost $60. Not bad at all. -
Rachel’s 4-star review: I can already tell you I like this place better than Cafe Tapioca. I was overwhelmed by the menu choices but I LOVED the prices. For a regular sized black milk tea with lychee jelly and tapioca, it was $2.50. When I go to Cafe Tapioca it's always at least $5. I deducted 1 star because the menu said they have coffee jelly and they didn't, which I wanted in my standard drink. I'll be going to this place a lot more often. -
Rachel’s 4-star review: I've been to this one twice. It's fun and there's no point going if you're not going to read the exhibits - which obviously rater mh did not do. If you try out the user exhibits (mirrors, face machine, etc) and read you'll spend at least a couple of hours here. This place is really fun and something different to do. -
Rachel’s 3-star review: There's nothing like the aroma of tantalizingly sweet strawberries wafting through the air in Brentwood. When you take in that smell, it's time to go U-pick yourself a big batch of strawberries. I went here on Thursday with my husband to do U-Pick strawberries after we visited the U-pick cherry farm a little down the road. The strawberries were beautiful and delicious. Why 3 stars? #1 There is a minimum of 2 lbs/ per person purchase that is enforced for U-pickers (excludes children.) Frankly, I don't want to be forced to make a minimum purchase. It's not that I'm not going to be buying more than 2 lbs, it's the fact I don't want to be required to do so. If somebody wants to go in and pick 1/2 a lb for that night's dessert, what's preventing the owner from weighing that half pound and charging accordingly? I don't get it. #2 No water allowed. When I went to the cherry orchard up the street, the people running the table asked if I had my own brew in my mug, they let out a big collective sigh of disappointment when I said it was just water. So the people up the street encourage bringing your own beverage (and quite possibly might not mind what you're drinking) into the orchard while you pick, yet here you can't even have water. What gives? #3 There is a $100 fine if they catch you "throwing away fruit." I don't know what that means. If a piece of fruit is rotted or picked over by a bird, are you not allowed to throw it aside or are you forced to buy it since you plucked it off the plant? #4 The list of rules is just kinda nuts because it's pretty long (and longer than the one pictured here on Yelp.) Too many rules makes it feel like Big Brother is watching you pick strawberries. There is a deposit of $.25 per box to load strawberries in that you must pay prior to picking the strawberries. The strawberries tasted delicious (thank God because you're not allowed to taste any prior to purchase) and my husband and I ended up buy 5.5 lbs. I ended up using the strawberries on top of Julia Child's recipe for Biscuit Au Beurre that I whipped up topped with my homemade whipped cream and served with vanilla ice cream. It was the best strawberry shortcake I've had in... forever. Luckily, my husband and his friend agreed. -
Rachel’s 5-star review: This is my favorite theater. I love that I can buy cheesecake here. The place is really clean and they have a really cool consession stand ( or 3!) This is the theater I prefer to go to over Regal in Dublin. -
Rachel’s 5-star review: Oh my good lord. DELICIOUS fortune cookies. First time I stopped by with my now ex and we took one look and said, "let's get out of here." It looks like a dumpy hole in the wall with a million health code violations. The second time I went here was with my fiance on the Chinatown ghost tour and I actually tried one of their cookies (the flat, unfolded fortune cookies) and they were delicious! Too bad we didn't have cash on us to buy a $4 bag -
Rachel’s 5-star review: LOVE it! So today I just decided to see what "specialty stores" my Garmin GPS brought up today and was led to The Health Hut near my house in Brentwood. We went inside only to be told that they weren't open on Sundays but we could look around since it was only my fiance and me. The lady working was really helpful and talked to us for about 45 min. Picked up a 32 oz. bottle of Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar for $5.35 which is really comparable to buying it direct from Braggs online for $4.79 + shipping. Also bought a 3 lb mason jar full of locally collected unfiltered raw honey for $17 which is also a great deal since most stores don't carry raw honey. Got a bunch of free samples and found out they do UPS/Western Union/Notary at the location too. Really great selection and I'm happy to know they carry essential oils (same brand that Whole Food carries.) Their prices are absolutely amazing! -
Rachel’s 3-star review: Ok, I really don't like the food at this place but my fiance thinks this place is just delicious. I don't like anything on their menu except the chicken soup. The thing is with this soup, the recipe isn't constant. Today I got it and it had a ton of broccoli in it, not even chopped up. As well, they usually have a ton of potatoes and some sort of squash in it. I always pick out all the "vegetables of the day: broccoli" potatoes and squash. For $8 you get a big container of soup, tortilla chips, 6 corn tortillas and a single serving container of mexican rice. Sometimes you get a drink, sometimes you don't. I only drink water so I don't need the drink but I like getting one so I can give the drink to my fiance. Anyway, I usually fill up an 8 oz. cup with their pico de gallo, top with fresh cilantro, the hot green salsa and 5 slices of lime. When I get home, I dump the 8 oz cup of toppings into the rice, scoop the chicken and carrots out of the broth and some of the rice mixture into the corn tortillas and roll them up. I then dip the tortillas into the broth and eat. That's really good but that's the ONLY thing that's good. If you're not going to get the soup, go somewhere else. Oh, and the unsweetend brewed tea isn't changed out multiple times a day so the tea is really bitter.

Rachel’s 5-star review: Went here today with my fiance as we were trying to explore a little more of the area around our new home. Just happened to see a sign on the road an we decided to follow it. Stopped in at the restaurant and I had the French Dip ($8.99), my fiance had the Big D ($8.99) and we had chips and salsa ($2.99) as an appetizer. The chips were super hot since they came right out of the oven, but the salsa was just so so. The French Dip was the best one I've ever eaten. It was extremely flavorful and the au jus was filled with caramelized onions. Yum! The restaurant has 6 (4 person) tables, 12 bar stools and a lot of outdoor seating. Went into the store, they sell life jackets, bathing suits, sarongs, fish bait, beer and snacks. Walked along the dock and some of the boat slips, very nice. There are some palm frond umbrellas out if you were going to do a cookout nearby. Would for sure go back and I'm so happy that there's such a cool place near our house. -
Rachel’s 5-star review: I picked up a to go order here a few days ago. Unfortunately, NOBODY was there even though it was dinner time. Their kataifi is BOMB and so is their pilaf. I had the Mediterranean Plate which was pretty good. For some reason, my Russian fiance and I decided it smelled EXACTLY like beef stroganoff for whatever reason. -
Rachel’s 5-star review: You will get dirty. You will get sweaty. You will get tired. Wear sunscreen and wear good walking shoes. There are a lot of super steep uphill paths. If you're ok with this, take the short cut path - no bike allowed. It's at the top of the first hill. In the summer, watch out for poison oak and for the grazing cows. The cows are huge. Oh, and watch out for the bikers that are going a bazillion miles an hour down the hills (I don't know how they can possibly stop since it's so steep!) At the top, there is an olive grove and ponds. BRING MULTIPLE WATER BOTTLES. END OF STORY. I used to hike up this hill every single day my junior and senior year to stay in shape. I need to get my booty back up that hill now that I'm getting married soon to fit into my dress! -
Rachel’s 4-star review: Too dark in here but I LOVE their arroz con pollo. It's killer. I haven't had anything else here. I've been her 4 to 5 times in 4 years. -
Rachel’s 4-star review: I love this airport. I've flown in and out of it about a zillion times. Whenever I fly in, I get that "ahh, I'm home" feeling. Good things - my luggage has never been lost here, the security is fast and the workers are generally pretty nice and helpful. Bad - food is average and there's no Starbucks.I can live with this. It's really easy to get around, I know the place like the back of my hand. Parking is easy as is pick-up/drop-off (Unlike in Vegas.) I love that you can take Bart in and out rather quickly, or hop onto the highway. It's the best airport in the Bay. -
Rachel’s 3-star review: Okay, so this is no Westfield in SF, but it's still a really good mall, considering most of Concord is kind of a dump in a lot of areas. That being said, this place is two steps up from Stoneridge in Pleasanton, and is in a different category that disgusting hell pit in Tracy, the West Valley Mall. I used to shop here specifically because of the MAC Pro Store (the cosmetics, not the computers.) I spent a small fortune there. They have a Forever 21 accessory store. Yes, an entire separate Forever 21 dedicated to just accessories. The mall is very big, but the aisles aren't so wide that you feel you're all alone. The lights are dim, which is the complete opposite of most malls. The food court is good and the amount of stores they have is insane. Like somebody else said, they have like, umpteen million Macy's in this mall. This is by far my favorite mall in all of the Bay Area, especially because parking is a breeze! -
Rachel’s 3-star review: How do I forget to review places that I've been to a million times? The dog store, Yap, here is the reason I joined Yelp! My goodness, I need to get on these things! Okay, so Ghirardelli Square (which is NOT a review for just the chocolate shop [which has a different listing] - there's a lot more stores here!) is like the "upscale" version of Pier 39. No, you're not going to have some guy spray painted silver jumping out at you or places where you can see a magic show, but you'll be able to, just as you could on Pier 39, do the following: -Fight off swarms of tourists. -Eat overpriced food. -See views of the Bay. -Buy something about cats on a magnet. -Buy something with Marilyn Monroe's face on it, even though it has nothing to do with the location you're at. -Walk into a store that mysteriously makes their rent, yet they sell random sports memorabilia for teams that aren't based on this side of the Mississippi. One thing you'll see here that you won't on Pier 39 is: -Empty storefronts. -A cool mermaid fountain. -People not dressed like yokels (aka fanny pack, jean shorts, tube socks, running shoes and an oversized golf shirt) - yes, some people who come here dress up a bit. Is it a must see? Well, you won't die if you don't get to see it, but it's just one of those things you do when you come to SF. -
Rachel’s 4-star review: You MUST see the Golden Gate Bridge if you're a tourist in San Francisco. The Golden Gate Bridge is the Statue of Liberty of the West and makes me miss California, every time I see it. Local Insider Tip: It is FREE to drive across the Golden Gate Bridge if you are driving INTO the city. It costs $6 (Unless you have a FasTrak pass, then it's $5) to drive OUT of San Francisco using the Golden Gate bridge - they want to keep your money in the city. Local Insider Tip: bring a jacket and a ponytail holder - it is WINDY up on that bridge. You don't want to spend most of your time trying to keep your hair out of your eyes while you freeze your butt off! Local Insider Tip: Bring a car - you can not walk to the Golden Gate Bridge from your hotel. It's a beautiful place to take pictures and it's free to walk or ride your bike across. Come early to beat the crowds and wear a decent pair of shoes (not high heels.) If you decide to go under the bridge (via a boat tour) bring a coat, and sea legs - it is choppy as all get out. -
Rachel’s 5-star review: Definitely my favorite neighborhood in San Francisco. There's nothing like being in North Beach in the morning, when the neighborhood is waking up, and the tiny groceries are getting their delivieries, and early birds are sipping their coffee, reading their papers while sitting at bistro tables. The place is clean, fun and full of life. It's so quaint, it's like... it's like that place you've always wanted to live. It's cozy, walkable and beautiful. There's Catholic churches everywhere, bustling cafes and little boutiques. There are spacious parks to sit and eat lunch and a spectacular view. It seems like the only area in the City that I'd want to raise a kid (if I had to.) Definitely walk Columbus end to end - you'll love what you find. -
Rachel’s 3-star review: Local Insider Tip: Don't drive. Period. Walk. You can walk all over Chinatown and won't need to worry about remembering where you parked. Local Insider Tip: Come at night - many of the businesses that service the residents are closed and the restaurants are open (which means less hustle and bustle on the streets from people doing their daily shopping.) Local Insider Tip: Get off of Grant street and go down an alley. Listen for the clink, clink, clink sound coming from the basements. It's the sound of people playing (and gambling) on mahjong. You can hear it all over the place. Local Insider Tip: Look for mirrors above doors of homes and businesses. They are there to "confuse the spirits." Local Insider Tip: Go on the Chinatown Ghostwalk Tour to find more about this interesting section of the city. Local Insider Tip: Don't be afraid to haggle. Be patient. Listen when people talk because most shop keepers speak barely any English. Fun fact: The term "hooker" was coined here in San Francisco's Chinatown. Cheap (read: busted) "ladies of the night" were in rooms on the 2nd and 3rd stories of brothels and needed a way to get men's attention. They would lower a hook down to grab men's hats off of their heads to get them to come up to their rooms to get their hats back... and for some slut time.
