Get change of address cards from the USPS, the packet should have some coupons for movers, Lowe's, etc.  You can also do you change of address thing online.  Check out mover reviews on Yelp and be wary. Some companies are super shady.

I can get you 1/2 off of an exorcism if you want to exorcise at least three rooms.  Offer good until Sept. 1.

J/k...  Good luck on your new home, though!

When I moved, I got a packet of coupons either from the phone company or the USPS.  Some were junk, but many were useful.

USPS, you can do it online, but it costs $1 because they use your credit card for verification.

But do not do it the way my neighbors did once years ago, when they got into a big fight the first night they were in, and 3 cop cars got called to the home.

They took the lady away in cuffs, and 3 months later he was gone. She had a more foul mouth than any guy I have ever talked to.

change the locks, you can get a re-key option which is cheaper.  You keep the same lock, but the locksmith can set all the locks to open with just one new key.

    - Meet your neighbors...This is huge!

    - If your home has a warranty from the seller......USE IT! There is usually a one time deductable for each service call. Try and have all your problems solved on the same visit.

    - Have your home phone number blocked so no one can 'reverse-look up' your address on Google.

    - Make sure the people that are moving into your old house have your forwarding info. Get them a small welcome gift ($25 gift card to Home Depot or Target). In case letters and packages still get delivered to your old place.

    - Ask PG & E and all the utility companies about any rebates in your area.

    - Learn where your gas and water shutoffs are in your new place

    - Call PG & E after a few to 6 months after you move in to inspect the water heater, in case some quick cheap repairs were done before the home inspections were done.

    - Look yourself in the attic and crawl spaces. Sometimes people leave goodies behind. And some inspectors don't catch everything. When we moved into our house, we had a hot wire in the attic our inspector missed. It could have caused a fire. I also found a box of old coins under the crawl space hatch.

    - Negotiate with the moving companies. DO NOT AGREE TO AN HOURLY RATE!!!!!! A flat rate only. Trust me on this one.

    - GOOD LUCK

If you are purchasing and moving to a home that has large trees, I highly recommend having them evaluated by an arborist.  Shortly after we moved into our home in Oakland we learned that all of our Monterey Pines had to be removed due to age and beetle infestation.  We paid around $3K - $5K for each one to be removed.  A very expensive lesson!

I wouldn't worry about the move logistics.  I would:

    - check the neighborhood at night.  do you have noisy neighbors or community noise (traffic, planes, trains...etc).
    - check the access to freeways, stores, etc..
    - got any criminal offenders living in your area?  how's the crime history in your new hood.
    - meet the neighbors...... so you know who to avoid and trust.
    - if you're buying the house... check with your local city codes if you're planning on landscaping your front yard.   Some new homeowners discover that they can't alter their front landscaping.

if you get a home warranty with the deal, make sure you test EVERY appliance (even A/C in winter and heat in summer) to make sure it works before the warranty is over

Light sprinkle Diatomaecous Earth (food grade) on the ground a week or so before you move in. Any creepy crawlies will crawl over it and because DE acts like tiny shards of glass, cutting the exoskeletons of the roaches, bed bugs or whatevers, by the time you they will all be dead.

Stomp merrily on their desiccated corpses.
