Doesn't want to pay $114 for overnight parking for 2 days in the city

We are from San Mateo, CA and planning on staying at Grand Hyatt SFO for a wedding for this weekend and we don't want to pay $57 overnight parking charge at the Grand Hyatt. Is there any alternative way to commute from San Mateo CA to GH?
We are going to do a 2 night stay at GH and should be back by Monday morning around 10 am to San Mateo.
I understand that GH doesn't provide free shuttle ride from the airport. I am having 2 day ParkNRide pass closer to the airport. But I am not sure whether that's going to help us.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, I would check this out... the Grand Hyatt is in San Francisco... in the city.  The one near the airport is the Hyatt Regency and parking there is $18/night.

Are you sure you have the right hotel?  I cannot believe any airport hotel would charge in excess of $20/night.

not quite sure im following your rather odd diction, but if what you're trying to say is that you have a two-day free pass at park-n-ride, park there for free, take their shuttle to the airport and a cab to the hotel. kind of a hassle, but should be less than $10 each way. Or just take a cab from home - even that would be a lot less than $114.

    unionsquareshop.com/park…

There is the Sutter Stockton parking garage.

The above link posts other parking lots, but the Sutter Stockton garage is directly across from the Grand Hyatt.

Looks like 24hour parking at these lots will run you $30plus for 24hours.

    Best of luck...

you know, i wondered exactly what badri just said -that's insane for an airport hotel. probably wrong hotel.

Or take a cab to SFO and take BART in. Bart will take you right near the Hyatt.

riiiight - if you're really in the city and not the airport, there are several choices, but sutter stockton is a good one, and probably the cheapest in the immediate area. good to start by knowing what city you're going to be in.

I am talking about Grand Hyatt at the Union Square. It is $57 for a overnight self parking.

We are not going to use the car for both the days of our stay. Only we need them to commute back and forth from home to GH.

Then I think BART is your best option.  Park at Millbrae BART and use the Montgomery St. BART stop - it's just a couple hundred yards away from the Grand Hyatt.

i won't shop at sears anymore

  1. Actually the Powell St BART is closer to the Grand Hyatt.

And yes park it at the BART parking lot in Millbrae --- look up the website for parking fees. I know that it's $5~6/day for the San Bruno BART parking lot.

Erica: are you sure one-way from airport to Grand Hyatt Union Square is $10?

  2. yeah ive done that before. parked my car on the weekend at the millbrae BART which is free. took the Bart and walked to my hotel. seriously SF hotel parking is WAY overpriced

Any idea on how much is for weekend parking in Sutter Stockton Parking garage?

I cannot attest to the full gamut of garages that are far cheaper but for instance we have a garage across the street from me at larkin and Post that is 12 a day. There a PLENTY of places out there that are off the beaten track that wont rape you for fees. 57 is outlandish.

511.org or as another recommended, Caltrain is a good option from San Mateo.  When you reach SF, you can just hope on the street car that will bring you to Union Square.

Why go through Bart?  Take caltrain then muni. Or drive to the city and park at soma. Parking is around $10 and walk to union square in 20 min.

not sure what type of wheels you'll be driving but I would think twice before leaving my car unattended for 48 hrs in a soma parking lot. I'm not saying I wouldn't do it,but I'd think twice.

Any ideas on the zip cars? I haven't used them but curious where it may work for us?

    • 396 friends
    • 280 reviews

you might want to check to see where the closest zip car pickup location is to you where you live in san mateo and if there's a dropoff in downtown sf (?) ) Is that what you are thinking to do?

looks like the whole point of zipcar and citycarshare is to borrow a car in sf and return it to sf,so that doesn't really fit your purpose I think... Plus they charge by the hour...

If you park in one of the neighborhoods near the Balboa Park Bart station you should be solid. Overnight parking is fine as long as you're not in a street sweeper area on a particular day. I live nearby and have friends do it on occasion. It's not a bad area but common sense applies (don't leave valuables in sight)

SFO is the airport.  You are referring to the Grand Hyatt in the City.  Just park at the Millbrae BART station and take BART in.  I think you have to make a reservation to park there overnight.

LOL....I don't get this.  San Mateo is about 20-25 miles away from S.F.  Without traffic (and depending on where in S.F.), OP lives about 30 minutes away.  Yet, she feels she needs to rent a hotel room for a wedding she's attending.  Being a local, she didn't realize that parking in S.F. would be crazy expensive?!?!?

If $114 is too much for parking for the OP, why even spend $100+ for a hotel room when you're only 30 minutes away?

Wow. Fifty-seven dollars??? Perhaps that is for non hotel guests. I just stayed at the Outrigger Waikiki and even they only charge $25 for hotel guests. Damn, the Hyatt sure thinks highly of it's parking garage. WTH???

    Kelly G,
You're talking about Hawaii.  OP will be in S.F.  Two totally different situations.  While in S.F., think NYC.....crazy expensive for parking and hotel accommodations.

This is so surprising because EVERYbody always drives to their hotel on Oahu at the end of their road trip, right?

  3. Even in the most expensive neighborhoods you can usually find parking for $25-30 per day.  With some searching, and walking a little, you can probably find $20.  Lots with in/out privileges are less common and more expensive.  If you're willing to move your car you can find overnight parking for $5-6 near Union Square or the Financial District, and all-day "early bird" rates for about $8 in Union Square (FiDi early bird rates are $18 and up).

  4. get a friend to chaffeur you.  pay them $20.

Hilton SF wanted $57 a day also but across the street was parking for $3 / hour or $30 for 24 hours.   Limited space and visitors with $$ lets SF hotels charge premium dollars even for paying guests.

Kay are you just randomly making up stupid questions to see if people will answer, Um if you do live in San Mateo how in the world do you not know about Bart or Caltrain.?  Also there are these things call taxi's.  And agreed if your paying to stay in hotel what's few nights in garage.

CA  public system sucks.  They change schedules,  change rules, discontinue lines with out mass updating notice.  The overnight  parking is  only allowed at some stations.  Some stations fill up by 8.  Bart N bound trains don't stop at the airport someday.  The shuttle bus doesn't run on weekends.  Last bus north was at 11:00   Yea there is no dumb question cause if you don't use the system daily the rules may of changed.

Ever heard of a designated driver?  Besides, you're assuming that the wedding is at the hotel the OP is staying at.  Who's to say that it's at another location and the OP would have to drive from the wedding reception back to her hotel?!?!?!?

I'll pay you the $57 not to post crap like this...suck it up, it's a weekend in S.F.
It costs real money to have the convenience of a car at your disposal.
