Can anyone recommend a place that can clean/detail the engine compartment? I'd like to clean up under the hood but am a little leery of spraying detailer, hosing it down and getting parts wet that shouldn't be.

    East Bay/South Bay, either.

    Thanks.

I've done stuff like that at my old job. It's pretty easy, but most detailers can do this. I just use Simple Green or similar degreaser and a little 303/Production Super 1000W on the rubbery/plastic parts.

Why would you need this?  Are you driving around with your hood up so other people can see how clean it is?  I'd consider this a waste of money, but that's just me.  It's not like your car performs better with a clean engine compartment.

But it does make it much cleaner if you work on your car.

AJs Detailing does good work. I used to take my Teg there for monthly full details. You will get what you pay for though.

keep a plastic bag over your distributor and get a power washer with 'Simple Green' prep.

Peter, engine detailing most certainly improves the performance and longevity of your engine.  Grease, dust and corrosives that build up become a problem if not cleaned regurlarly.  It smokes and effects the temperature of the block causing leaks and cracks.

Camaro. Just pulled out of storage, didn't realize how dirty the engine was before I put it in.

  1. Definitely go to AJ's Auto Detailing on Coleman Ave in San Jose.

You definitely need to clean it if you got an oil leak, if not there can be an engine fire.   The oil  will also cause a film on the windows, smoke,  gasket and rubber hose damage.   People who get new cars every three years do not have this problem.

Do not do it in the driveway, with cans from Kragen. The oily water is illegal to be drained down the gutter. A guy I used to live by, did that and got cited.

I have done it at a car wash, where the owner said this one special "Bay" had an oil trap on the drain, but it is a dirty job, and you have to take steps, to dry out the ignition, or the car will not start.

If you are not sure of what can get wet, I would suggest you use search to find an auto shop that does this.

Yes, not to be done on the streets, where the water flows into the bay.  This also goes for Radiator fluids.
