I am looking for a reputable HVAC to look at my home system in Fremont.  When it is switched on we heard the sound but no heat blowing out!    We asked a company over to take a look and was advised we need to replace the whole thing that costs something under $3000, if we want one with AC that will cost something around $6000.    The unit is 14 years old and I heard sometimes these thing can work for 20 years or even 30 years.  I am skeptical that our system needs to be replaced.  Someone told me maybe it's just the blower motoer needs to be changed that usually costs a couple of hundred dollar.

Any input is greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

$3K is pretty reasonable for replacement. At 14 years old, the unit's energy efficiency is not very efficient compared to new models. You can replace the motor, but other parts are harder to find. You may end up replacing the motor and in a few months, something else breaks that you can't get parts for. Then you're back where you started.

Don't give into the hype about "efficiency".  You keep rockin' that ancient HVAC beast.

I had to do this 2 years ago when I was informed by a plumbing/heating contactor that there was some kind of crack in my 10 year old furnace. I checked around with five other contractors and they all agreed. Sometimes you get unlucky and get one that doesn't last as long as the (so called) average.
You can have your general contractor install a new furnace/air conditioner without too much hassle. Let me know if you'd like the name of the contractor I've been using for 15 years. I trust him.

Thank you all for your input.  I have contacted PG&E for a free appointment to diagnose what is wrong with the system, then we'll go from there.  :)

Tina, do you not get air out of your vents in addition to no suction at the cold air return(s)?
