Never heard if 168 supermarket? Was it a mom/pop or part if a bigger franchise?

  36. Yes, there was 168 Supermarket.  Was originally the first Bay Area location.  Had been there for the last four years.  My mom told me about it not opening so I checked the other day.  I saw on Google that it had closed.  Then looked on the web site.  It only listed the Vallejo location which opened last year.

It's bigger down in Southern California and one in Nevada.

Guess having the parent company adjacent to it didn't work out in the end.  Nope not surprised.  Knew it would eventually close.

Curious as to how long it will take before another supermarket opens.

Santa Clara and Santa Cruz locations will remain open.

  37. Wow, Chefs!  Oh my!  Guess I will see if there is anything to pick up at the Milpitas location.  Guess that is.

Samson, I hope your neighborhood doesn't close. I've been there and it's the most modern set up compared to its previous location. It's a nice stop when one gets to Walmart and Dollartree in that center

  38. Really?   I will have to see for myself.  Nope I haven't been to the current location.  Yes, it's due to so many stores.  Of course, there's Walmart. Though that Walmart isn't the best as the management clearly doesn't care about the customer.  I've complained about the store but have not gotten any responses.  I much prefer the Fremont location.  It's less crowded.  Also you can ask someone where things are without refusal.

I agree Milpitas Walmart sux. I think I wrote a negative review on Yelp. If you know what you want then it's OK but if you ask for help your met with an I don't care. Sometimes I feel like I'm disturbing the cashiers when they're having idle chitchat with each other. But sometimes I order stuff from Walmart and Milpitas will have it in stock so I'm stuck. The Fremont one near the BART station is more spacious and a bit more organized. I grew up with the one in Mountain View and that's a hell hole. It's tight.

  39. I miss Red Robin at the Great Mall!

Audrey, is their a RR in Rivermark still?

  40. Yes, Chefs Daughter D. - There still is.  Just did a search.  It is the closest search to Milpitas.  Though no doubt that the Tri-City area misses it as it used to inside Newpark Mall.  The last time I went there it was pretty much empty.  As expected, when Fremont Hub has businesses meaning more stores.  The only exception is that they have since added a Costco which I have not been inside yet.  Just the gas station which was not busy.  It's probably because most don't know and instead go to Fremont. Newpark Mall will like still to be empty until it gets redeveloped. Tearing down the old Sears location for more housing.

  41. Target - East Palo Alto.  The real reason is theft not lack of business.  It is just off 101 across from Ikea so it is easier to steal and get back on the freeway just like what happened to the Walmart off of the Oakland Coliseum many years ago.  It is the fourth store to close since it was built many years ago years ago.  It used to be called Expo and was there well before Home Depot opened.

This may be old news but Marina in Fremont is closed. I went to shopping center to see if they carried an ingredient and to check out if my former pet wash was still open.  Marina closed.

Newark Costco is my chosen one even though there are many closer.
It's a wee bit smaller that the produce and walk in fridge is very congested on the weekends. Otherwise, it's pretty good for me.

  42. Chefs - Marina came before 168 Market.  I'm guessing the same reason why Marina closed down and 168 took over in just a few days.  Not enough foot traffic and too close to 99 Ranch.

An, thanks Samson...now I know where it was. I did see 99 ranch and isn't there a Japanese supermarket that took over a lions.  That shopping center has my favorite Korean tofu soup place.

  43. Yes, it was originally Lion's.  However it closed as it was too small and it was too close to the Milpitas location.  Then 99 Ranch took over and kept it for a long time.  Until Ross etc.closed and it had been vacant for some time.  I've been to the current location a few times and I much prefer it to the Milpitas location because of the food court.

Yes, a Japanese supermarket finally took it over.  Good use of the space. It's packed on the weekends.

Taco Bell on Main Street, Milpitas (I'm told it closed)
Sometimes when I'm at the Great Mall, that Taco Bell is convenient for a drink

  44. Chefs - I have no idea if it has closed, I will check tomorrow.  Will let you know.

P.S. I usually eat the food court as I have since I have been able to drive. It was always Arby's or Sarku's or now Charlie's.  But I get drinks somewhere else since they have trays.  And if there were, I am clumsy. So I make two trips.  Can't do anything about it.

Samson, thanks for checking, but n hurry ok?

I didn't know Arby's was at the great mall. Is there still an Arby's? I only go to the one h Sunnyvale mostly for potato cakes or gyros.  Love their jalepeno poppers cuz it's a whole pepper with just melted cheese

  45. Hello Chefs!  I finally remember to drive up north on S. Main Street.  It says that it is being remodeled.  However I don't think so as it is boarded up.  Wouldn't be surprised if it gets torn down for that new development next door.

No there is no more Arby's at the Great Mall.  It is now Charlie's Philly's Cheesesteak.

What was the name of that restaurant that had a crashed plane in a jungle theme? I went there once on New Years eve but reservations were made by a friend.

When I hear jungle theme, I think of "Rainforest cafe"
But I think I recall it had a timed volcano eruption.  I don't remember seeing an airplane as part of the theme.
Sorry, I'm no help here :o

Thanks Chef. Not the Rain Forest. It was in the late 90s when I went there

Airplane bars  LAST RITES or The Caribbean Zone

  46. Yes, you're correct.  However they are building townhouses next to the shrine.  If so, I am certain that it might no longer exists.
