Landlord is neglecting major plumbing repair for past several months. I included a letter with this month's rent check, informing him that I'll hire a plumber to do the work & deduct the cost from next month's rent. He called me up, left a message that he wants me out in 2 months because I cost him too much money. I need help.

I've lived here for 8 years, never once contacting the landlord for anything...I did all the repairs, myself.
Shortly before the plumbing problem, he raised the rent on me by 25% without ever notifying me through a letter. He only calls me, leaves me a message that rent goes up $400 next month.

About 8 months ago the plumbing went bad. I hired a plumber to do the repairs. Upon his service, he told me that the repair is only temporary because the main line is too old & will eventually need replacing completely. I've notified the landlord about this months ago & have never once heard from him. Since, the plumbing has only gradually gotten worse...to the point that the toilet no longer works & I can only use the water source for only one task at a time, otherwise the toilet backs up.

I've contacted the landlord about this & his response was that he wants me out because I'm costing him too much money??
Is he right? ...For evicting me because the main line in this house is 80 years old & needs replacing?
I've done all the minor maintenance repairs to this place without ever deducting from rent. But this major plumbing issue is well beyond my financial limits & I am not liable for this. And now that he has to put out some money to have this place repaired, his solution is to evict me? Pffft. Time to get a lawyer.

I'm hoping to find someone through a referral because I cannot afford the "hit & miss" tactic. Don't have the money or the time for that.
This is a post for local Bay Area, CA residents. You're in Reno. Why are you even questioning this?

  1. There are government bodies that protect tenants rights. Go consult them first before you pony up money for a lawyer.

Your first  homework should be on retaliatory evictions.
