1. Ok Jersey!

For most of us, we are just a PATH train/ferry/NJ Transit ride away from NYC where we can pretty much find anything we want. True story. But, I wanna know where you kick it when you are lookin' for live music/museums/culture/art in your local town/'hood!

For example, Jersey City is brimming with so many arty things to do around town: from a constant calendar of live performances at Art House Productions, to Mana Contemporary (ahem: yelp.com/events/jersey-c…) to live dj's at LITM pretty much weekly. I know Hoboken's got the legendary Maxwell's, Mile Square Theater and whole row of galleries that open up their doors the third Sunday of every month. But, what am I missing?

Where are you enjoying the cultured side of life? Hook us up with your local spot!

  2. The Newark Museum is worth checking out. I didn't expect it to be what it is but it has has some good exhibits. Also, they have lectures and music and that sort of stuff. A lot of what they offer is free which is nice. Admission is suggested at $10 (with a 2 for 1 Triple A discount!) so I guess you can pay less if you really want.

Not far away, Art Kitchen also in Downtown Newark is a cool little coffee shop. I have seen some amazing spoken word stuff there.

I gotta second Liberty Science Center and The Newark Museum.  Also, just across the river, in little old Harrison, we have the Red Bulls Stadium where you can get your footy on.  Staying in Harrison, and just a few blocks from the arena, get your underground culture on at the Greenroom when there's a Punk Nite being held there.  Next Punk Nite (shameless plug) is scheduled for Saturday, 9/29.  Two DJ's, all VINYL, all pre-1985 punk, ska, oi and hardcore all night long.

New Jersey Symphony Orchestra at the NJPAC. As good or even a better orchestra than the NY Phil. They also do run-out concerts to Trenton, New Brunswick and Morristown. I'd write them a glowing 5 star review if I didn't sometimes work for them.

  4. Some great suggestions! Any other legendary spots we're missing?

Also this is a thread about Jerz, not one little township within, so I can name all of the cultural or arty places in NY state, right?

South Orange PAC also have good performances (latin jazz and lots of other stuff),  Paper Mill Playhouse and the George St. Playhouse in New Brunswick are also good for theater goers.  Already mentioned: NJPAC, NJSO, Prudential Center, Liberty Science Center, the Jersey City Museum is good when it's open (small but I have seen some cool exhibits in there).
