    Hi everyone,
I just moved here from Nova Scotia and I'm looking to get a second opinion on my car inspection. I took it to Canadian Tire and true to form they found more problems than the car is worth, and the cost of repairs is more than I could ever afford.

The car is a 2006 mazda 3 with 194000kms, it was last inspected in October of 2015 so I know there shouldn't be any major issues. Really just looking to find a trustworthy mechanic that will tell me if Canadian Tire's quote was accurate or not.

    Thanks for any info!!

    Hi Brandy:
At this stage, I think you just need to maintain your car. Luckily Vancouver's winter is not as harsh as NS.

You can also take it to the local Mazda dealership service centre and see if they are competitive.

I usually get an Oil Change and sometimes replace some air filters. I spent some $$ to have separate sets of tires for winter so I have a lot of wear left for my car. I use Fountain Tire (2725 Kingsway) close to Purdy's Chocolate Factory. Costs for Oil Change, Inspection, fluids top up, etc. (Winter Maintenance Special or Spring Maintenance Special) is about $70?

I have had the Canadian Tire treatment before, I went in for an Oil Change, got a call at work from them to say my brakes are all gone and I might not have brakes working properly. When I asked how much, they said $700 for all four. I asked around my colleagues and they said it seems reasonable, so I said go ahead. When I went to pick up the car after work, I was given a bill for double the amount. The reason is the parts were $700 + labour + the Oil Change. I literally had a melt down. Luckily my co-worker loan me the money on his credit card as I didn't have enough to pay for that.

NEVER will I tell anyone to take their car to Canadian Tire and I ask for all quotes in writing to final amount before I said go ahead.

I usually take it to Gord's Auto (yelp.ca/biz/gords-auto-r…) by Science World. He's a very friendly guy who'll tell you straight up what you need done and if he can get it done cheaper, he will.

  1. My boss uses this:

I've used these guys for 20+ years

I would never trust Canadian tire to diagnose my car. If you're shopping around, it's always best to go to the dealership and have them give you estimates. Then you can go from there.
