Couldn't believe that Costco Wholesale didn't provide EV charging stattion. Many small retailers has already done so.  After all how much profit Costco has earned.

I can't believe people buy an EV without a basic idea of where they can charge them

I agree. You would think that Costco would have EV charging but I understand that most of the time EV charging stations get built because of incentives. I'm guessing Costco would not get any incentives thus no EV charging stations.

EV station are like home improvements permits.  You are only required to meet code when you perform upgrades or modifications you may get some extra tax breaks too.

If don't have it already, download the PlugShare app. Shows where most charging stations are located.

My friend has a fiat that is all electric but it can only go 110 miles on a charge. When I say 110 miles, this means you use nothing else in the car? If you use AC, Heat, Radio, Headlights, windshield wipers, then you are talking about 70-80 miles maybe?
It takes at least five hours to fully charge it so considering the PG&E cost to charge it and the very limited amount of miles you can drive, what money are you really saving?
The cars that run on gas and battery are much better.
I drive a mid sized SUV that gets about 18 miles per gallon around town and up to 30miles a gallon on the highway.
I would never buy an electric car because the best ones are very expensive and if you go on a trip you have to stake out charging stations and wait for it to be charged up. I have heard they have electric cars that only take 30 minutes to charge but compared to pulling in a gas station that are everywhere,
Takes a few minutes, I can tell you I personally will never buy a car that takes all the hassle of electric. I really wonder how much money you are saving because the cost of electricity isn't that cheap?
The idea sounds good environmentally but what about how you are getting the electricity? My friends have solar panels but at the end of the year they get a PG&E bill over a $1000 dollars for what the solar panels didn't cover? The cost and maintenance of solar panels take at least 10 years to pay off and then they may need upgrades?
I think in years to come they will cost less and work better but they really don't pay off at this point in time.

Jay C: Stuff like this isn't always true, and an individual has to really figure this out themselves. The way things like this are put has a lot of different variables, and that is why what is said is not realistic. I am just saying this because you are only going to read the stuff they want you to. I am just saying from experience, there is many hidden costs and to suggest the rates for charging a car requires a individual meter and outlet from PG&E being installed and you have to own the place you live for this to happen. All this cost a lot of money and the people I know that have electric cars just plug into a regular outlet because this lower rate they offer has to be separate.
At this point with electric cars, the hassle of finding a place to charge it up, the time you have to wait, it is just not worth it. I will stick with buying gasoline and be on my way, just saying......

The government will increase the epa ave mileage soon so car will either be tiny or Hybrid.  Reg gas cars are auto shut off and turbos already because  they are squeezing all the mileage they can.  The result is a  push to e cars for regular day use.    Most home owners can add a wireless charger to the garage and never need to plug in again.

All this electric car stuff isn't advanced enough yet. The hybrid cars that run on battery power around town in stop and go traffic are way better. They use the gasoline mode on the freeway and get good mileage.
All electric cars are more expensive, need to be charged up and that takes a lot of time, and let's face it, who would take an electric car on any kind of long trip knowing they need to map out charging stations and then wait for it to be charged up? Even the cars that have some kind of super charging ability, this will take at least 30-60 minute.
A car that runs on gas takes a few minutes to fill and gas stations are everywhere.
Speaking for myself in a road trip, why would I want to waste so much time at a charging station that of course you have to pay for the electricity. I don't know what they charge at these stations but gas isn't that much more and it is fast. The people I know that have electric cars only use them to go back and forth to work and own at least one other car that takes gasoline for trips!

If I'm going to put a lot of miles on a car in one trip, I'd rather rent a new car with unlimited mileage, than use up the remaining miles on me commuter car

@ Michael C: If you were talking to "Me" as the OP, I think I already made my thoughts and reasons very clear about the technology not being good enough yet.
All electric cars just can't go far enough yet, the charging stations are few , and  just the time it takes to charge a car up, especially on a vacation is to long.
Gas and hybrid are still the way to go.

  1. Oh the entitled and privledged EV owners. Oh hey, why don't we put a gas pump on several parking spaces. My Jeep can use some gas.

The ironic thing about buying an EV vehicle is they cost more money, Drive a lot less miles then gas before needing a charge that takes a lot of time, and where do they think electricity comes from?
As I have stated before, the idea is good but the technology isn't there yet to make these vehicles consumer friendly enough.
I posted before that a friend of mine leased that fiat 500,very small car. They have had it two years now and the original mileage per charge was 110 miles, now they have told me a charge only lasts about 85 miles.
When stating this mileage per charge it doesn't include using, radio, headlights, heat, air conditioning, etc. My point is everything drains the electricity, so how many miles can you really drive?
A gasoline powered car just makes more sense to me at this point in time.
EV are really only for people that can afford all that comes with it and also own another car that runs on gasoline. My friends that have a EV also have two other gasoline powered cars as well.

The nice thing about EVs is that one does not have have to worry about maintenance items such as motor oil, transmission fluid, spark plugs, fuel and air filters etc.  In addition, smog checks are no longer required.

I believe most people use their electric cars as a daily driver while charging it at home, and use gas cars for long trips.

  2. Right, but when something breaks (just like gas powered car) you're really screwed. Oh, and those batteries aren't chump change either, they're ridiculously expensive.

My friend fiat has a bit less then a year left on the lease. He told me a charge at this point is down to 65 miles per charge and that is if you didn't turn on radio, heat, wipers, headlights, etc. They are still left with about 15k miles to drive before going over. They now have to charge it every night.
I guess it was a good deal for them to lease this car because of the rebate and the payment is only $100 a month. It was a lot better then buying it and next year when they turn it in, they won't be getting another EV. They are thinking maybe hybrid, maybe?
I have driven a friends hybrid a lot and I am so impressed about the around town driving only uses battery, she only has to fill up with gas once a month at the most. When it does go into gas mode on the freeway it gets over 30 miles a gallon. Much better the depending on an EV.
