that was BBQ King and they sold the land to build those Italian style villas condos, yes the devil is alive and well. that place rocked, they even had an authentic "hand carwash, with a dude, a hose and a bucket."

Haven't had any "authentic" BBQ out of state unless u count houses of relatives in Chicago, Memphis and Mississippi.   Just a lot of research..KCBS.com, barbecuen.com; smokering.com, etc

I do like Pecos Bills in Burbank, just lookin for more spots, Robins in pasadena sux, don't really like chris and pits or hogly's, the bear pit is okay. most bbq in la sux, they let the ribs sit in a bin and get luke warm and lose there succulence and warmth. so what other spots you guys know?

Asking about the best BBQ in any city is too vague of a question.  A BBQ place may have great ribs but terrible pulled pork.

So IMO the best BBQ pork spare ribs in LA

    Phillips.  Nothing else compares.

    Rib Shack

    Jaybees.

    Pulled pork:

    Porky's

    Jaybee's

    Tri Tip

    Phillips

    Santa Maria BBQ-Culver City.

My rule of thumb for good BBQ.  If there is bulletproof glass between you and the person serving BBQ, 99% of the time it will be great BBQ.

I just saw Baby Blue's on "Rib Paradise," a show on the Travel Channel.  It looks pretty good.  I used to live in Covina, so we'd always go to Pinnacle Peak, which is pretty good.  Canyon City BBQ in Azusa is also very good, especially their brisket sandwich, which is actually the best brisket I've ever had.

    Bludso's in Compton: sinosoul.com/?p=15

Drum smokers, 3 types house stuffed sausages (I don't know ANY other Q shack in LA that does this), fine brisket. Great Texas style pork ribs with beautiful smoke rings. , and a mustard sauce(on the side), family owned & operated, tell 'em the Asian Tony sent you.

Makes Porky's & Jaybee's/JB's look like dog food.

What's w/ the Jay Bees obsession? Pork ribs are tasteless without sauce, with barely a hint of smoke; the pulled pork was tender but still pretty bland without sauce, and definitely not smokey enough.

Their blandness and consistency issue has been beaten to death: chowhound.chow.com/topic… & chowhound.chow.com/topic…

Just remember, the sauce is NOT your boss. while JB does have a burning hot sauce, their faux attitude, expensive pricing and mediocre ribs/links really put me off.

not Houston.  Their ribs are cold, rubbery, and tasteless.  Not to mention expensive and highly unfullfilling.  They make Tony Romas seem like a 5 star restaurant in comparison.

Currently my back yard, until my new Texas BBQ restaurant opens in Los Angeles very soon, but I can't tell you the location yet?   If you are interested go to smokecitymarket.com and become a fan of the restaurant on facebook, facebook.com/home.php#/p….  I will be offerings updates and looking for die hard BBQ fans to be my first customers 'on the house' as soon as it opens.

But reall, there is no truly great BBQ in LA. You need to drive down to San Diego and go to Phil's BBQ if you are craving truly great BBQ.

^ right, if you say so. The title isn't hard to decipher. The finest we have "here". Not there, not thur, not San Diego. And btw, there's also no good food in LA, only in SF.

Ryan, per Yelper's request, please feature bullet proof windows into your interior design after you sign your lease. Thanks.

"And btw, there's also no good food in LA, only in SF."

Well the SF versus LA thing is a pissing match thing. But I have yet to see the majority of LA Yelpers claim that LA makes truly great BBQ. LA offers a lot of great types of foods, but BBQ isn't on that list, unless its Korean BBQ or other non-American BBQ.

Yeah, I'm pretty sick of people pissing all over LA not having "authentic [insert food here]". We are predominantly a city of emigrees, so we all bring something to the table. No, maybe LA can't capture the beautiful, rustic smoke of a grass pasture in Lubbock for beef ribs, or emulate your grandmother's baked beans she made in a cast iron backyard cauldron in North Carolina.

To second what other's have said, the BBQ south of 10, for example, is as authentic, complex, and varied as any you'll find from KC to Memphis, you simply have to drop the snobby attitude and predisposition that all food in LA somehow less authentic or flavorful because 'people in LA only know how to make movies and tacos.' Most of the people who open these restaurants are from out of state, so how does being in LA strip the flavor or authenticity from their BBQ?

    Racist.
