I want to get away from the city, but can't afford much. Any ideas for a nice 3-4 day trip? Thanks!

GarGu...  What's your budget?  And can you crash @ a friend's place if visiting a certain city (ie: Boston)?

i'll be travelling with mom, so no crashing. Depending if we'd need to fly, I guess around $5-700 including spending. And thanks, but no gambling. :)

@Chun.  I'm not a gambler.  I generally budget $50 to throw away and thats it.  Its also cheaper to stay at the hotels in Mystic, Connecticut and take a cab ($10-$15) to the casinos so you dont have to drive.

  1. Do you have a car?  You can drive to Montreal.

Buck's County, Pa? It's an easy drive (or bus ride). Cold but pretty in the winter.

$500 - $700, I would defnitely suggest Boston.  It's just enough time to see the entire city and go to surrounding areas such as Salem, Martha's Vineyard, etc...

Although this might not be the best time of year.

Btw... Megabus has one way tickets for about $15.  That'll help with food budgeting while you're vacation.

@ Toy...  But Mohegan Sun has so many great tables for playing  =D

  2. What about Saratoga NY?  There are many museums and historical sites. saratoga.com

Boston is always a cool trip.  Always something new to see.

Don't go to the poconos - Unless you have a car, you wont be able to get around.

Plus, that's where my winter home is, and I hate to see the area get crowded with tourist, because it means more dead deer on the road.

DC is always fun - you could Bolt/Chinatown bus it, and spend $100 a day if you so choose.

But do it before/after the Obamamania...

Montreal...easy drive...can make it in 5 hours (without any major traffic). Plus our dollar is favorable to the Canadians right now.

Boston...another 4-5 hour trip and a great city to dine in and shop.

I originally was going to suggest DC, but I don't think it'll be affordable this coming month with the inauguration.  Some other places you might consider are the Berkshires or Cape Cod (places like Provincetown, even in Winter, can be quite relaxing).

MassMOCA; Massachussettes Museum of Modern Art

Williamstown is a quirky, arty town with tons of lil shops (just ignore the campus, haha)

Rent a room with a hot tub, and go skiing

  3. I like the hot tub idea!  Hot tub!
