Does anyone know of any good hiking trails relatively close to the city that I could do as a day trip??
    Thanks!

Delaware Water Gap (on the PA/NJ line).  The New Jersey side has better trails.

Take the Harlem line on Metro North to the Appalachian Trail stop. You can hike either direction and see some beautiful countryside.  The train only stops at that stop on weekends and holidays. FYI
Also you can take the Hudson line up to Cold Spring, NY.  There's a great hike just outside of town that takes you through an old quarry and gives you beautiful views of the Hudson.

Can you drive and how far is "relatively close"?

Harriman is 30-40 min North of Manhattan with some great hiking

You might look into meetup for groups that get together to carpool out of the city.

Minnewaska State park in New Paltz

I think the trail Titz is thinking of is called Breakneck ridge just out side of Cold Spring. That was a great hike

I was at the Delaware water gap this last weekend (and missed the Meet Chauchee event- wah).  But, I saw a black bear teaching her cub how to climb a tree.  It was amazing!!!  Oh and my dog got a tick.

I'm from California, and its the best hiliking I've found here yet.
