My poor 89 Honda Civic died last week. It overheated and blew a head gasket, and isn't worth spending the $1,400 to fix.

Does anyone know of any charities that will come take it away? Or any other good solutions?

I had an old 1985 prelude and it completely died on me...i called the first thing in the ACTUAL yellow pages book under 'auto donation' and they came by and picked it up in less than an hour.. I'm sorry I do not have the # with me (it was years and years ago...)

Just make sure you have your pink slip handy, as you'll need that to transfer the ownership over to the organization..
    Good luck!~

I am always hearing ads on the radio for "St Patricks home for Children". They say that they will take your car, running or not.

Most places will NOT take your car. They usually cannot profit from its sale since it is only worth parts or scrap.

Your best bet is to drop it off at pick & pull

Oh BTW even if they do take it you are only allowed to write off its market value. This may end up being 100$

Devan: Actually Andrew gave me a good idea. I'm sure you could get an engine swap for less than 1400

I have donated 2 cars to the mechanics that helped support those cars for their final couple of years.

I always thought, "Heck man, Ray spent so much time bailing me out and fixing my baby, I might as well let him have it."

I, of course, had a lot or respect for the 2 mechanics that earned my trusted steed, but there definitely comes a time when you need to put that horse down.

I agree with Andrew.   Most Honda parts are worth $$$.  (Hondas are the most commonly stolen vehicle, because 1. they are easy to steal and 2. their parts are worth $$$)  You should be able to unload it pretty easily.

Andrew G: Seriously. There are piles of perfectly good swap engines from the other guys souping up their cars. If he tried hard enough I bet he could find one for free from someone trying to get the thing out of their garage.

P.S.  My dead car was a 1984 Camaro, it hadn't been started in over a year, and the bttery was dead - that proves they'll take nearly anything...

    Hi Devan
You can choose your charity from this site:

    donateacar.com

We donated our car to  the Berkeley East Bay Humane Society:

    berkeleyhumane.org

    Good luck!

Note, I believe they changed the tax rules around valuation about your donation.  Don't recall the specifics, but its essentially what the charity gets for the vehicle, not high bluebook or whatever "fair" valuation method used previously.

Use a Sawzall to cut it up into manageable pieces.

Throw the pieces into the back of a truck and head up to the mountains.

Once in the mountains, locate a pack of coyotes.  Feed.

It works for dead bodies, why not for dead cars?
