I once let them put me through to a real person.  She asked me what the make and model of my car was.  I told her that if she knew something as intimate about me as the expiration date to the factory warranty to my car, she should at the very least know what factory built the car.  Then we got into this big back and forth chicken and the egg circular logic thing and she got frustrated and so did I and I hung up.

They called me back two days later.

    -------------

Amen.  As the caretaker of my elderly mother every ad, mailing or telephone call that is under the guise of an "account someone may have" is dangerous.  There was one she received by post in the form of a post it note - looked very real - that she almost ended up sending money to.

There was even an ad from a television series on a cable network that took on the look of an "update from a family member with info on the next family reunion".  Since the character shared the same last name as our family (thus, how they chose the recipients of the mailed ads) my mother kept it thinking this was from a family member... even though the character was Caucasian.  If this was a request for money or funds of some sort a check would have been written immediately.

I hate scams like these because they end up taking the elderly for thousands of dollars if family isn't around to intercept.

As long as you didn't have some prior relationship with the company, they're supposed to have to pay for violating the DNC List and calling you after you've requested they not. Anyone know anything about this?

    • 795 friends
    • 273 reviews

I heard the fine is $2000, but I also heard that there is a loophole that makes you have to notify the company in writing that they have violated DNC.  You can't do that if you don't know who's calling you.

When they called just now, the caller ID said "Unknown Caller".

then it called back...the next day probably/.and then again a couple days later... and at that point I was hella annoyed so I said I'm gonna press 1 to speak to someone...I said how do you know my warranty is gonna expire if you don't know who you're calling? Then he said well do you have a car? So I think they are selling warranties. I said this is a jail facility please remove this number...he mumbled something and hung up... it called a couple days later...but hasn't since...

    Ok...here's the thing.

You are a total IGNORAMOUS if you think requesting to be taken off their calling list is an option.

I have stayed on the line to ball out the caller and in once instance after
using ever foul word in my vocabulary, the caller stopped laughing and told
me that the company changes phone numbers ever few days so it just doesn't
do any good to request to be taken off a list.   They call random numbers so
quit the shock as to how they got your number.   Jeez...   Come on.  Do you really think they care?

    • 52 friends
    • 25 reviews

Sometimes, when I'm in a snarky mood, I stay on the line to talk to a real person.

I tell them that I have a 1972 VW Bug and then act outraged when they don't
have an extended warrantee for me.

    Or...

I stay on the line and tell them that I'm only three years old and I don't know where my mommy is...

    Or....

I act like I don't speak English as a native language and drive them up the wall with my questions.

    Or....

I start to act like I'm freaked out that there is something wrong with my car and how do they know?
Did they do something to my car?   What the hell did you do to my car?!

    Or...

I just start swearing like a sailor right off the bat and they hang up on me.

This scam won't stop anytime soon so if I'm in the mood....I just waste their time and maybe
    prevent them from calling you.

    You're welcome!

    -----------
I don't think they care. I think that the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and the 2003 amendments to it make it illegal for true telemarketers to call numbers I put on the the national Do-Not-Call list. Also, the FCC rules prohibit the use of autodialers in many situations. You can report violations to the FCC here: esupport.fcc.gov/complai… or by emailing fccinfo@fcc.gov

Once you're on the list, no telemarketers other than those who the exceptions applies to can call you. It doesn't require getting on a company-specific list. Also, I don't think telemarketers are a solid source of info on... anything.

I've heard it and it's really damned annoying!

  1. I've received these calls a couple of times.  The woman's voice is harsh and insistent and annoying.  The first time I listened for maybe 20 seconds.  Now I hang up as soon as I hear her.  I never stay on long enough to torment a real person as K-leen F and Suge's guy do.  That *almost* sounds tempting enough to put up w/ the call.

I share KayJay's concern about the elderly being swindled.  Until my mom moved into a senior facility where she had no phone I was worried that these kinds of telemarketers and other crooks would have access to her.  About 10 years ago there was an appliance repair guy in Walnut Creek she contact through his huge Yellow Page ad.  He was going to charge her hundreds of dollars to fix her dishwasher until I intervened and put her in touch w/ someone honest who did the job for less than $100.

Instead I get collections calling for the person who previously had my phone #. I told'em that person doesn't have this # anymore and if they don't believe me then take him to court. They stopped calling almost all together. I still get random calls on rare occasions like one every couple of months.
