Does Chevy's count? I'm guessing Taco Bell, Del Taco and Jimboys tacos aren't even close, huh?!

Nopalitos and Chando's Tacos both come to mind. They are more like taquerias than restaurants, but very authentic.

I also enjoy Tres Hermanas on K Street

Find a good taco truck or la placita in Madison - all the rest are far from authentic

Caballo Blanco over off of Franklin.

I have only eaten there once earlier this year I think it was and had to try it as I drove by it and saw this amazingly old as dirt vintage place....

Wish I could remember what it was I had as I failed to take notes but the food was really delicious and authentic.. The atmosphere is amazingly warm and the ladies that were on shift and serving me were beyond attentive and friendly even during the busy lunchtime hour...the ambiance is fantastic!

Now I need to go back lol

Lalos. Molcajetes. Authentic. Very different from your standard mexican menu. mulittas at chandos also different.  Both delish.

  1. I have to agree with Joe K's recommendation of Las Islitas Restaurant. Their food is most definitely authentic. On the other hand,
If you're looking for Tex Mex style menudo, I would recommend taqueria Maya's on Broadway, Curtis Park.

I love Tres Hermanas, I've never had a bad meal there and their sopa de pollo and sopa de albondigas are legit. I also like El Meson in the south area off of Calvine. I wish there were more taquerias in sac

  2. Zazon Guadalajara Grill on Fruitridge and 24th. Very close to Lalos, another great Mexican restaurant.

    Mmm... Tres Hermanas!!!

  4. "Authentic Mexican food" is a very subjective slippery slope to travel down. Most of what I've seen both here in California and other border states is far from what you might find in the non-touristy areas of Mexico. But then restaurants  here must cater to the whims of their diners and that typically means the not so "authentic" foods served north of the border. A good compromise is La Fiesta Taqueria on Greenback and Sunrise:  yelp.com/biz/la-fiesta-t…

LOL -  My labors (all of them were from Mexico) took me to lunch at a taqueria in Concord a few years ago.  They said it reminded them of the food they had at home.  I read the Yelp reviews when I got home and at least five people said it was not authentic.  The food was good.  I really don't give a FF if it was authentic or not.
