If you're a sushi fan, you'll be happy to know there's a new spot opening up at 28th & P where Una Mas was. Apparently it's one of the guys from Zen Sushi (huge fan) who's opening his own spot...Lou's Sushi opening sometime in April. Can't wait!

Ah, Pescado's! Refried beans in a paper cup. I miss that place.

There was another Uno Mas at 19th and J but it's long gone. Looks like they've all left the grid.

Agh, yes, good ole' Pescados! Probably more known on that corner than Una Mas ever was which came in during their "just keep repositioning in and around the grid until something sticks" campaign and it's evident how well that worked out for them.

Either way, can't wait to check this new sushi joint out. Apparently, it's the guy who opened Sushi on the River and then went to Zen after that. It doesn't look like the website is operational yet, but here's their FB link -

Matt - but then I'd have to go to Roseville instead of walk 200 feet.

Johnna - my boyfriend also hates sushi (which I love, but I wouldn't consider myself a snob), we've found a compromise at Sushi Cafe because they have a lot of Japanese food items that aren't sushi, and they're apparently good.

On that note, we tried Tugboat Fish and Chips on Freeport and Fruitridge and noticed a Japanese place called Futami next door. I can't attest to the quality, but they had a ton of non-sushi items so we are planning on going back to try it at some point.

I had Kru sashimi the other day and was a little disappointed. Come on Billy, these are half the size of other places. I was truly happy to get a great deal at Nishiki with a groupon for lunch and had a great happy hour deal with the lunch sashimi and lunch 2 combo, Beer and wine, only to pay $15 total and a $10 tip.

Johnna - in belated response to your Japanese cuisine inquiry, I beseech you to try Akebono on Freeport. There is a large menu featuring a wide selection of delicious homestyle Japanese dishes, beyond the typical tempura and teriaki bentos. Favorites of mine include a curry udon, sukiyaki, and cold soba noodles with ponzu. The place is very tidy and simple, lively and upbeat. The servers and the sushi chefs are polite and pleasant. It's a go-to spot for me.

Regarding Lou and his time at Zen Sushi, he's always been one of my favorites there, even before the remodel when the restaurant was called Zen Toro. I'm looking forward to seeing his own enterprise, which is long overdue in my opinion. As for Mikuni, anyone who prefers that place over the plethora of sushi/Japanese options in this town is not to be trusted. That's like saying McDonald's makes an awesome burger and is a must-see for any visiting relatives.

Buha ha ha ha Buster, I love you.

I have to say though that Kru has gone WAY down hill since it opened years ago.  The last time I was there, the waitress and the sushi chef could not tell me what kind of salmon they had.  That's pretty sad, then they made up a type of salmon that does not exist.   I am a fisheries biologist and it's my job to know what kinds of salmon exist in the world. Do not tell me your salmon is, regular wild pacific salmon from a farm in Alaska.  Farmed salmon is not wild, is really bad for the environment, there are no salmon farms in Alaska, and there are six different species of salmon with different run times on the pacific alone.....I hate people who make shit up when they don't know the answer.

Most sushi places are good if you sit at the sushi bar and know what you want.  Tell them not to put so much sauce in your rolls or better yet, tell them to put it on the side.  Make sure to ask for fresh wasabi.  It still does not compare to a half pound of fresh sushi grade red tuna at home with real wasabi and plenty of fresh vegetables.  You can have all that other salty stuff.

    • 112 friends
    • 76 reviews

That's just it Joe, some folks don't know what they want - or more precisely, don't know what all is available and what the aroma, texture and tastes are like. But I'm sure you'd agree that some places are better than others, more forgiving and better quality, for those unfamiliar with the territory. If you're implying basic sashimi then I'm in agreement, most places are going to be about the same, especially sitting in front of the sushi chef with a familiarity of aquatic species and the cuts of their meat.

Yes on Akebono. And if you time it right, take the long-route to your car on the way out and hit up  Mahoroba.

Mikuni has the best sushi, In & Out has the best burger and Ernesto's has the best Mexican food. This is why I'd rather gargle peanut butter than watch my fellow Sacramentan's embarrassingly vote for Sacramento's Best Of each year.

Joe, sorry for the late response, I've been traveling and get on here only sporadically. I wasn't being a hater just to hate. Lou was the sushi guy at the old Taka's on S Street and then Zen Toro/Zen Sushi on I Street. I'm sure he's a nice guy but I've never liked his sushi. His rice always tastes mushy and I've just had much better. Plus he lets his customers drink way too much and get out of control, disturbing everyone else.

As for Kru, I think Billy makes good, innovative sushi but every time  I go there's a wait & the chicks they have working the front are &^%#$*  b____es. I get that the place is popular but lose the attitude. I expect with Kru's crazy high prices that the service in general would be better. How about treating all your clients nicely not just your bros and regulars? Green is green, right?

Akebono is pretty good, although it's fallen off a bit since Jim (Jimmy?) left and Nagato in Carmichael is good too. My boss took me there and their stuff is fresh. I think they're actually Japanese too.

I went! They are very much having the usual new restaurant woes, mostly easy fixes. I am going to let them have their growing pains before a full review, but I'll give you guys some notes.

I ordered the tuna and salmon nigiri, boyfriend got the Veggie #1 roll (cucumber, asparagus, and spinach), and we each got a miso soup.

We loved the miso soup. It could have been a little warmer but had a lot of bits of seaweed, tofu, and green onion (I think). Good flavor.

The veggie roll was also good, if a little plain. It could have used a sauce or something to give it a zing.

My order arrived incorrect. Instead of tuna and salmon I got hamachi and salmon. I like both and had been thinking of getting hamachi instead of tuna, so I wasn't entirely sure I hadn't accidentally said hamachi when I ordered.

The fish was not the best I've seen but certainly not bad. The rice seemed a little dry. I assume these are both circumstantial and part of training and getting established.

People around us (there were 8-10 people there the whole time, coming and going) ordered some of the other rolls and they looked amazing. I heard the girl at the next table comment that the tempura inside her roll was a little too crunchy. Again, I think it takes a while to train everyone and get used to equipment and such.

They will need to get blinds or something. The entire Southwestern side of the restaurant is windows and half of their seats face West. We managed to snag a table in relative shade but others weren't so lucky.

The service was helpful, friendly, and really kind of jovial. They seemed genuinely hyped to be there and about opening. Really great energy and I could see this being a totally cool handout spot for small groups.

Our meal was $24 - which is by no meals cheap for sushi and soup for two but certainly not expensive, especially once they've hit their stride and are turning out the best product they can.

Beers were $7, so we said ouch and passed. Maybe once in a while or of they start a happy hour thing.

Upon payment I noticed my receipt did say tuna and let the girl know I wasn't upset and had enjoyed the hamachi, but the order was incorrect. She apologized and double checked with the chef. He was in a rush and mixed up two orders I think. I don't blame him, having just opened and facing a sushi bar packed with people. I think if I had brought it up before eating it, it would have been fixed.

Over all the place is neat, clean, and inviting. Not a good place for 5+ groups that want to sit together.

I am excited and hopeful to see how Lou's develops.

  6. That's a pretty good review for not being a "full review"!  Thanks Crystal!

Actually a pretty shill review that wants to see something succeed in her neighborhood. Read between the lines. Mediocre Sushi crappy ex-mex restaurant with high prices and poor training. Damn Crystal has never been so forgiving. What explains the love? The ridiculous  side of Yelp.

It seemed to be pretty honest and gave enough details for Furst to form his own opinion.  I am not sure why it would qualify as a shill?  Most of us are pretty forgiving of new restaurants.  If she has the same experience in a couple of months I am pretty sure she will be blasting it with both barrels.

  7. +1 Joe Kali Jefferson

    +1000 Crystal

Excellent detail in Crystal's review.  I appreciate her specifics and breakdown of meal logistics, costs, and pros & cons.

I think those who have a lazy "aversion to reading" are the ones who criticize those who are literate.  It's like penis-envy, but instead of a whining over a small penis, they whine because they can't intelligently grab enough words to coalesce their meager thoughts, thus it's easier to ridicule & use punchy short phrases like a verbal bully: instead of being creative, and using some thought to provide their own positive example, they devolve to the cheap route & resort to criticizing someone else.

Joe, you're absolutely right. If I'm still having the same experience in a few months, I won't be giving a very good review.

I think part of being a good Yelper is understanding new businesses and the struggles they go through, and offering constructive feedback while recognizing accomplishments. That isn't shill, it's not being an asshole. I don't expect you to know the difference, Furst.

  8. Oh christ, Crystal.  Now you're addressing him directly - petting him - and he'll be like a puppy you can't get shoo away now.

I went back again on Friday night and we tried to chicken wings (I think they're ginger and - crap I don't remember...something delicious) and the Daniel, My Brother roll. We took it to go this time and kind of glad we did. There wasn't an empty seat in the house.

Service is excellent, helpful, and friendly. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and there was a pleasant buzz of conversation and people laughing.

The chicken wings were surprisingly meaty and large and had a great flavor - definitely getting those again.

The Daniel, My Brother roll is really showing me Lou's style (which I'd already heard about) - not traditional. They were still only doing limited menu at that point, and this may change, but if you're headed out hoping for the same old thing, you aren't going to find something you like unless you want a California roll, Spicy Tuna roll, or nigiri or sashimi. Lou's rolls are tasty but different and you need an open mind going in. You'll actually need to read the menu before ordering. Lots of use of things you don't normally see like asparagus, Sriracha, spinach, etc. I totally dug the Daniel, My Brother roll, but I'm not sure it would fulfill the "I just want some basic sushi" craving.

Overall I would classify Lou's as refreshing with a definite mom and pop feel, but a little bit "let's get weird". And I'm digging it.

I would love to see them roll out some nigiri combos or dinner specials, and I'm hoping to see some basic non-sushi stuff (chicken dishes, bento type stuff). Word is there will be happy hour deals of some sort.

By the way, the to go order was consumed on my porch. I was waiting and waiting for you guys to join but it got cold so I went in.
