Have any of you picked up those guys that stand around looking for work? Trustworthy?

back home...not here in SD. I picked up a few one day to come and fix a fence that was falling down on my ranch. Saved me a lot of money.

come to think of it...my Dad picked one up one day to pressure wash our deck....after he was done it looked like a 2 year old attacked the deck with a sander...we ended up having to have the deck replaced.

so there is good and bad I guess.

If you do just be careful. I have used them mostly for moving things and cleaning up the place when moving. Other wise hit CL or th home depot. There are lots of GOOD labor people whom have back grounds and experience whom have been laid off due to economy. I know the home depot by my husbands work in vista off melrose has a guy out there all the time with his truck and tools. Hes got a nice set up and is just looking to support his family. I give him props for not being like my friends husband and feeding off the government and sitting on his rump. Good luck.

You are not hiring Cholos dude...just some hard working people.    That's what I hired to pack my u-Haul and when we moved my sister out of her house in a hurry.

The guys at the Home Depot in Rancho Del Rey were a little more aggressive than I was comfortable with.  They'd approach your car and knock on the windows.

At the Home Depot where I shop now in El Cajon, there aren't any day laborers, probably because the store is across the street from the police station and they don't want to get busted for loitering.

"Have any of you picked up those guys that stand around looking for work? Trustworthy?"

Everyone is different.  Some have better skills than others.  Start with a minor job to see how they do and build trust once you find one or more who's work you are satisfied with..

"I hope you have insurance. If they get hurt on your property, they can sue you. You may have some tax reporting obligations as well based on the relationship (employee versus IC)."

We live in a sad place.

Las Calle, that is a real general question.  Some may have transportation or someone who will drop them off but they go to a place where people are looking for workers.  A lot of them don't and would like a ride back when done.  You just need to go talk to a few and find one that works out.

Depending on how many boxes I would pay 2 guys like $60 and a ride there and back.  Like an hour work right?
