Why is this concept so foreign in San Diego?

    Just speaking from my experience...

I am from L.A. and the people on the freeways there are FAST.
When I moved down here to San Diego  noticed that people were driving a lot slower than I was used to, so I slowed down.  I figured that since San Diego is much more compact and accessible by the freeways, people take them for only a few exits and speeding up to 90mph just to get off the freeway was not necessary.

Mind you, I do not take the 5, 805 or the 15 regularly so I can not speak on behalf of those drivers.

Tell me about it Mateo, I'm no speed racer, but I go with the flow of traffic.  I was annoyed driving home on the 805 this afternoon to find two drivers on their dang cell phones on the fast lane driving right behind each other, each going 60 mph and each without their headset or blue tooth on.  That bugged....

The worst part is there are only 2 signs from Oceanside to the border that say Slower traffic move right... and it took me 15 years to notice them. Heck, I'd be willing to chip in for some more signs.
And what about flashing people with your passing lights only to get the finger as you pass by. What gives?!?

I read the title of this post wrong.  I thought you were asking why people drive so slow.  My apologies for my lame response.

The worst is 2 or 3 cars all going the same speed, but in different lanes.  Thus making a wall of slow motherfuckers.  It's so bad here, that often the slow lane is actually the fast lane b/c it's always empty while every slow bitch is in all the other lanes.  I don't know what is part of the driving test out here, b/c I got my license and took my test in the midwest, but they teach you to keep your slow ass to the right and only get in the other lanes to pass.

There are too many "ass backwards" drivers on the road.  I went on the slow lane this morning to pass up the traffic on the other three lanes.  It worked where I was able to pass them all up while maintaining my speed.  With my 27 mile commute one way during the week, I can sense where on the freeway the idiot drivers are since I'm on there long enough, but I'm not one of the idiot nor ass backwards drivers...lol!

This is easily my biggest pet peeve when driving in San Diego! Some states outlaw driving in the passing lane at all if you aren't passing other cars. California, like many states, follows the Uniform Vehicle Code, which requires drivers to keep right if they are going slower than the normal flow of traffic. Yet SO many people are oblivious, and end up obstructing the flow of the entire freeway. I wish I had a sign on my truck saying "IF I JUST PASSED YOU ON THE RIGHT, YOU'RE IN THE WRONG LANE!"

I think here is the solution.  You paint numbers on the lanes starting with the left 80, 75, 70, 65 then everyone in that lane is supposed to go that speed - we'd have no need for braking unless in heavy traffic.

Unfortunately, those numbers show speeds in excess of the posted limit(s).
Personally, a simple front-mounted laser would suffice for me.

That's why the speed limit needs to change.  65 is too fucking slow.

All day I'm on the road, I've learned to chill on this subject to stop me from going insane.  That being said, right lane is where its at, San Clemente is about the only area worse than San Diego for left lane bandits.

I am guilty of moving back into the left lane within inches of passing the slow car... Some people are just oblivious that they are slowing things down, I ride with my roommate a lot and he is a 65mph no matter what grandma driver... l'm trying to train him out of it but some people just shouldnt be on the freeways.

Seriously, this is a major reason why we have traffic at all.

    no one.

I'm being passed up at 75mph and given the evil eye.

    OMG I hate SD traffic
I swear the only time people drive fast out here is when it rains, when it's a nice sunny day they drive like turtles I don't get it.

Why is traffic always backed up for miles & when you finally see what the problem is, it's because one little car is on the side of the road being towed or something simple like that. You would think it was a 20 car collision the way traffic looks

I want a old police car from auction, tint is black and maybe then people will move over... or slow down thinking I'm after them.

Don't forget the other San Diego delights:
    Straight ahead on red.
Creep into the U-turn before the light changes so you block traffic.
Left turn from the inside lane to the far right lane.
(Bonus if you have to swerve to miss right turning traffic.)
Fear of medians leading to driving over the lane lines.
Double-buses running the yellow and blocking an entire 6-lane intersection.

I think it has to do with the confusion between "right" and "left."  People in San Diego read that sign and ask, "is that my right, or your right??????"

The only thing I hate more than the assholes going 60 in the fast lane, are the asses who insist on riding your tail in the far right lane, or the second to the far right. I realize it's in part because of the far left lane grandmas, but it's inappropriate. Also, what is up with the people who drive like 45 mph for a solid mile after getting on the freeway. If you are entering the freeway, it means you have to speed up quickly to blend in. NOT block up the right lane near every exit/entrance.

It doesn't help when you have CHP doing nothing about it. I have witnessed many times CHP in the left lane behind someone slow and they just pass them on the right. For all intents and purposes they are our "role models" for proper driving(to me) and by them not doing anything about this problem it sends the message to drivers that they won't get in trouble and thus they don't give a shit.

As far as why this even happens. Why people feel the need to not "KEEP RIGHT"......it's because they think they are not wrong. Every one of us is guilty of it. We all KNOW once we get into our cars we are the best drivers and are God's gift to driving and everyone else on the road must be retarded. Forget about common sense and courtesy......it's all about you and how everyone needs to get out of YOUR way. Sadly, it's this arrogance and sense of motoring entitlement that will always keep things the way they are.

It''s nice to see that so many others share my viewpoint. I was beginning to think I was alone.

I find this amusing because I learned how to drive in California and this is something I was NEVER taught. (I was licensed about 10 years ago.) Not on the permit test, not taught during driving lessons, not tested during the exam. Sad, huh?  I picked it up when I spent some time driving on the East Coast and "slow traffic to the right" is a norm.

But now you know- it's something that CA drivers are never taught.  In CA, both to the left and to the right are passing lanes- unless you're trying to pass a truck. :P. You'd think it's "common sense," but as the saying goes, common sense isn't so common.

MsMargo M. - "Left turn from the inside lane to the far right lane."

This happened to me on Saturday when I was getting off the 15. I was in the outer left-turn lane, and homefry from the inside who nearly decked me wasn't even AWARE. Luckily I was in a patient mood that night... having come home with beer from BevMo n' all.
