Should I become a union painter instead of plumber? I would eventually like to start my own business one day. Also can a painting Contractor make as much as a plumbing contractor?

Painters need a blank canvas and Plumbers lay pipe! I believe Plumbers are more lucrative my friend.

  1. Lay pipe ... mmmmm

Plumbers do much of their work in crawl spaces, surrounded by rats and snakes. While painters go nowhere that the residents don't go.

Paint because plumbers have to deal with shit often.

I'd choose being one of those drywall installers. You get to wear those cool stilts. Then maybe you can parlay that into becoming a Cirque du Soleil artist.

Do you have an adequate plumber's butt and jeans that sag?

  2. Plumbers make more per hour typically over Painting contractors.

  3. Also plumbing is a skilled trade, which can be paid around $100 per hour for overtime work if a plumbing emergency occurs. That's not the case with Painters, who make slightly over minimum wage as an apprentice.

I wonder what plumbers' retention rates are. The first three plumbers we had here suffered from depression. One went to Germany to learn cabinetmaking.

The happiest tradesmen I know are electricians. They make good money, and enjoy their weekends. Two are looking forward to a lucrative retirement.

  4. Electricians make really good money but Elevator Repairmen make more.

  5. The apprenticeship program for Elevator repair is hard to get into and only offered every few years.
