Looks like my hot water heater is dead.  Any idea how much it will cost parts/labor to replace it?  We're in a typical 4 bedroom house, about 2K square feet so I'm sure it's just a standard size and nothing special.

I'm looking for a plumber now, but am just wondering how much this is going to set me back.

Oh the joys of owning a home!

Your best bet is to buy a water heater at a supply store and put it in will call to avoid material mark-up by the plumber.
Just write down the info on the cover plate and go to Home Depot.
They USED to run mid $100's in the late nineties during my general maintenance days.
    I don't know about now.

Consider paying more for one of those wall mounted instant hot water heaters. They run on gas, but do not have a big tank full of hot water getting cold all the time. So, they only use gas when the water is turned on, and you never run out of hot water.

i think some cities require you to buy a permit too.....

This is a while back but my husband replaced his parent's water heater himself (he's not a plumber).  He just went to Home depot, picked one up and replaced.  I think it cost around $100.  Will have to ask him for more detail once he's awake...

Yes! Consider buying a instant water heater or a solar water heater. It'll save you lots of money in the long run.
The instant water heater heats water only when you need it instead of constantly heating a pot of water 24 hrs.

400-600 installed and the old one disposed of.
gas or electric models about the same price just have the correct tools ready.
have the t/p valve replaced and the pan and drain line checked.
also have the earthquake straps checked and blanket insulation put back on.

most plumber/service places offer 24/7 at no extra charge.
lots of competition and little mark ups.
    well worth the price.

but if you can handle all that then go for it..
just don't leave the old one on my street corner.
