I am looking to mirror the Academy of Science roof in the front yard of a friend's house.

I know they used 9 drought resistant plants that are native to SF.
I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to do this?
There is currently a mixture of grass that need to watered all the time.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions please advise...

    "The Living Roof Project

Participate in a citizen science project by helping the Academy collect data for a long term monitoring project on the Academy's roof.  Learn about the roof's delicate ecosystems, its plants, and about the diversity of birds and insects that visit the roof daily.  Participants must be 12 years or older and should dress appropriately for outdoor activities.

Reservations: Academy admission plus $3 per person.  Buy tickets online  or call 415-379-8000 (press 0 for a reservation representative).  Limited space available (15 people maximum)."

Find a plant nursery near where the garden will be planted, then they won't have to readjust as much. Most outdoor nurseries have a variety of drought tollerent and native plants.

There is also the native plant nursery in GGP behind the arboretum. They most likely raised all the plants that went on the roof.
