1. Does anyone know a decent place to get a guitar tune up (filing down frets, replacing input jack, a few other minor things) that is affordable and does quality work?

Bonus points if it is in (or near) the Sunset. Thanks folks.

The old guy did a great job adjusting the action and restringing my Taylor limited.  It's not the cheapest, but really really good quality work and he will adjust the guitar to your playing style.

Gryphon in Palo Alto lowered the action (filed down frets) on my Martin without my asking them to. Does that change the sound? Why do they do that?

There's a difference between filing frets and lowering the action.  Filing the frets doesn't necessarily change the sound, but will change the feel/playability.

Thanks for your help. I have a D-18 I bought in the 70s which has gone up in value. Beyond that, it was all I owned at the time and means a lot to me. The guy at Gryphon was trying to help me get back into guitar playing and said he'd "lower the action," but I didn't know that meant filing the saddle. It seems to sound the same. If you do own a Martin, they will service your guitar for free. They did a pretty good job with my warped pick guard.
