do you have curbside recycling?  I'd take advantage of that.  If not, start to recycle bottles/cans and paper, and figure out where to take them.

I also save CFL bulbs, batteries, and #5 plastic and take those in.  Best Buy will take two electronic items per day per household, for recycling.

I also like to reuse stuff.  Animal shelters will take plastic grocery bags to use when they walk dogs.  They'll also take boxes that a rabbit can make a home out of, and old sheets and blankets.  I also use plastic grocery bags as trash can liners, so I don't have to purchase bags.

You can reduce a lot of what you throw away this way.

Reducing meat intake is a great way to help the planet.

You can also modify small plastic boxes (just cut the tops off) to use to organize shelves and drawers.  That way you won't have to buy something plastic that may end up in the garbage at some point.

If you have old medication, contact your pharmacy to see how to dispose of it.  There may be special instructions for that.

  1. Cutting down on a lot of the paper I use at work. It's so easy to press print and use lots of paper you end up tossing. I also recycle everything I can.

If anyone is interested the Nature Conservancy is an amazing organization and if you make a donation and become a member they send this really well done periodical describing their accomplishments.
    www.nature .org

    a little about them:
Nature Conservancy -- the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people.
We're proud of what we've accomplished since our founding in 1951:
    * We've protected more than 119 million acres of land and 5,000 miles of rivers worldwide -- and we operate more than 100 marine conservation projects globally.
    * We have more than 1 million members.
    * We work in all 50 states and more than 30 countries -- protecting habitats from grasslands to coral reefs, from Australia to Alaska to Zambia.
    * We address threats to conservation involving climate change, fire, fresh water, forests, invasive species, and marine ecosystems.
    Why We're Successful
It's how we work that has made the Conservancy so successful -- and makes us optimistic that we can expand that great conservation work to meet the challenges ahead:
    * We use a science-based approach -- aided by our more than 700 staff scientists.
    * We pursue non-confrontational, pragmatic solutions to conservation challenges.
    * We partner -- with indigenous communities, businesses, governments, multilateral institutions, other non-profits...and people such as yourself.
    Transparency and Values
The Conservancy also operates openly and transparently. Read our annual report and financial statements as well as our statement of core values to find out more about the way we do business.
If you have a question about the Conservancy, please call us at (800) 628-6860 or contact us for more information.
