How many of you have been scolded/bullied by business owners who were unhappy with your reviews? I was just the victim of a disgruntled owner of Chili Lemon Garlic Thai in SOMA. Apparently my taste buds are idiots and his pad thai is awesome. Um, yeah.

  1. I'd update that on your review. More reason to avoid.

Absolutely, add what he said to your review.

Then post the link here for us to read :)

I took the whole thing off because it was turning into too much drama. I am going to update a whole new review soon.

American Animal Care Pet hospital in Fremont is notorious for threatening Yelpers. Look 'em up, awful awful, awful!!!

I took my review down when they sent me a letter threatening to sue. It was actually sent to my ex-wife's house since she continued to go there after we split up. I didn't want to get into any more crap with my ex-wife so I removed the review...now had the letter been addressed to me, I would have left it up and told them to shove it!

I get this from time to time and what I usually do is send them a very polite reply explaining how addressing the issues you've pointed out is a much better use of their time than harassing people over honest opinions. Then I tell them they can F themselves and I block them.

On a side note I tried CLG when it used to be on 24th and it was mediocre at best. There used to be a very good Thai place on the Bernal Heights side of Mission but they changed chefs and now they are just OK so now my favorite is Lers Ros Thai.

I was the victim of the wretched Allison Rowe of Harvest & Rowe in SOMA... I say put the review back up and change your account settings so they can't reach you.  My feeling is that there are better ways of dealing with unhappy customers than turning them into enemies; let them know that they are only making it worse for themselves.

I just took down a one-star review of A Plus Appliance Repair, after the guy found me at work, called me there repeatedly, scared the crap out of my secretary, and threatened to write a bad review about my company (a law firm, of which I am one of 2000 employees, and which had nothing to do with my hiring of A Plus Appliance Repair) if I didn't take my review of him down.  I didn't want to get fired, so I took it down.  I told him that Yelp gave him a space to respond to my review with his own commentary but he wanted nothing to do with that.  Is it possible that Yelp would yank the entire listing of a company like this,  because who knows how many other negative reviews they've gotten customers to delete with these bullying tactics?  Now I only have three reviews to my credit, all of which are five stars.  Not good.

Just remember that you have nothing to gain, and they have everything to lose.

I sometimes just brush off rash reactions.

I've had nothing but good experiences which I really appreciate from business owners.  Professionalism is a wonderful quality, as is perhaps 'listening' to the emails from good business owners who try and resolve/hear out Yelpers.

Inspired by this thread- I just wrote my first one star review- I think I've been too nice all along.  Sometimes if something really bad happens, I don't want to even give the people a Yelp review.  But in this case I couldn't let the incident slide.  It was so upsetting!

I got a letter from a vet.  I updated my review, but didn't think a whole lot about it beyond that.

If someone threatened to sue, I'd laugh.

I posted a 2/5 star review for a local bookstore. The owner found out where I live and tried to force her way into my house!

just search on google - "ocean avenue books yelp"

Sean, I don't think it's about you anymore, dear.

It happens, to varying degreed of crazy.  I think it depends on your review.

If the company's service being reviewed is one where they needed your name in the course of doing the work, and your name is something unique so you can be found at work through Google, then they can find your phone number at work and the name of your company.   Also since this was an appliance repair person he knew my home address, but thankfully things didn't get to that point.

It's just irritating because companies that do this to the extreme will have better review histories but they are the ones who should be avoided.  Next time I'll use an alias and stand firm.  Meanwhile, I need to write some non-five-star reviews.

You are only cool if you start getting death threats on yelp.

Wait -- don't use your real first name, last initial?  So your name is not Frank B.?  I'm new to this.  Everyone I know uses their real first name.  But I don't know many people.

In my case the business owner was able to determine from my reviews and profile that I had a state issued professional license. Since that is all public record and searchable by city and first name she was able to look it up online and get my address. I've since changed my license address to my employer.
