If you want it fixed, you either go through insurance and probably will have to pay your deductible, or pay out of pocket.

Yes, I did have full coverage. I just had to take it to an authorized auto body shop by my insurance and it was all taken care of.

There are a couple of dent folks that can do it pretty cheap, depending on the dent.  I used this guy called dentmender.com he is over in the Eastbay.  I believe I paid $80 for a bad dent on my door.

Wow, 5 inches deep.  I wonder what might have caused that dent.

  1. If you don't have full coverage it's not covered.  I would think a one-panel dent job would be $1,000 to $1,500.  If you did have coverage you would pay $500-$1,000 as deductible and they might raise your rates to recoup the cost so don't worry, lack of insurance isn't a mistake in this case.  Is it worth $1,000 to $1,500 to you to drive around a car without a dent?  Everybody has them.  If you've been 5 years without body damage you haven't been parking on the street.    Indeed there's a big range of body shop prices.  You could get it pulled puttied and touch up painted for a hundred bucks or two.  You could buy a replacement panel and have it professionally painted.  Or you could save the money and buy a couch.  You get what you pay for.  Sometimes less, rarely more.

    "Edward Q. says:

Not necessarily. There are guys out there with a lot of experience who will heat up the plastic and reshape it while it is pliable enough to do so. Some bumper repairs done at shops SUCK! Modern vehicle bumpers are typically  some form of TPO (thermoplastic olefin) If they use body filler on it it will crack and of flake off the next time it is impacted, DO NOT get this kind of repair. Many shops don't even bother to use a flex agent in the paint which allows the paint to flex, if they skip this the paint won't adhere properly and will crack and flake off the next time it is scraped or impacted in some way. In general you want to avoid repainting if at all possible.

"anna "help find bongo" c. says:

You are not obligated to use an insurance company's body shop, it is your legal right to have your vehicle repaired at the facility of your choosing.

I recommend Sal Contreras without reservation for paintless dent repair. I am not recommending him because of any affiliation with him. I met him and came to know him when I worked at Acura, he serviced our cars and those of customers, he also does work at many body shops and car dealerships around the bay. Have a look at his work and judge for yourself.

  3. So my meteorology teacher told me this story.

Apparently his friend left his piece o'honda crap out on the street one night. It hailed huge sized hail and the thing ended up with a million little dents and broken windows.

He decided to have fun with it, knocked the windows out, pained the whole thing white and wrote "I'd rather be golfing" on it or something of the like because it looked like a huge golf ball gliding down the street with all the little dents.

    Maybe paint it white?

Sorry to hear about the dent in your car. As other Yelp members have posted, you should investigate hiring Dent Doctor or similar, in addition to inquiring with your insurance.

Unfortunately, this kind of stuff happens everywhere in the city, even when you try to be extra careful where and how you park. I live in Presidio Heights, and I park one of my cars on the street sometimes. Often times, i find a new ding on the bumper or paint scraped off the bumper. It amazes me how this happens, because the street is flat and I never park in between cars. I move up all the way to the front or back of a spot that can fit two cars. Yet I still find a dent.

The other day, my brother came over for dinner and when he left, he found his sideview mirror broken off and laying in the street. Very annoying, but you just have to expect these sorts of things as a part of life in the city. Too bad I never see the people that hit my car and drive away. I can't imagine they didn't realize they took 5 inches of paint off my bumper ...

unless you've paid to have Comprehensive, you'll most likely have to take care of the dent out-of-pocket.
