Just moved into a tiny apartment in the city and need interior design help. None of my old furniture will work in this new place because the furniture is just too big. Not looking to spend to much (prob. won't be a problem due to the small space) but I would like to hire an interior designer to help make the most of the space... Was thinking of trying to find an interior design student who is looking to fill their portfolio. Really looking to keep costs down but def need to do something with the space and I'm at a loss for ideas. Any suggestions on a good affordable interior designer? Thanks for the help.

What is your budget? What color scheme and style are you most drawn to and how much will you need to store?

I used to work for an upscale design-build firm (home builder/architecture/remodeling/interior design)...I can give you free info.

You're talking about interior decorating... not interior design. Interior design is when you blow down walls and create new rooms, etc. Most furniture stores have interior decorators at your disposal for a nominal rate.

+1 on Ikea.  They got sample set ups for small rooms of different sizes, including one at about 300 sq ft.

Princess Grizelda, he can tell you everything about color, curtain fabrics, rugs, furniture, etc. He's been on 60 Minutes and worked as a designer (Macy's, other major stores).

Oh dear. Should save your money on the interior design and save up money for a larger place. That being said, I agree that you should look around in stores that specialize in small spaces, to come up with ideas, and also maybe peruse a few books and websites for ideas, before you plop down your money on that interior design professional.
