I need a new car and wanted to get a fuel efficient one as I commute 80 hwy miles a day. I really like the look of Jetta but as I'm doing more and more research, it appears that VM cars are unreliable and breaks down often with high maintenance cost. Has the 2010 model improved? Would it be a good buy?

I'd rather get a Civic. More reliable and better resale value. Fuel mileage isn't too bad.

    Civic -- City / Highway / Combined -- 25 / 36 / 29
    Jetta -- City / Highway / Combined -- 30 / 42 / ??

If you want to lease, Honda is having a good promo right now.. Zero down and $210 a month for 36 months.

I don't know what a tdi is, but I love my Jetta and haven't had any problems since purchasing in 2007.

I love my 2009 jetta tdi.  a lot cooler than a civic and drives like a german sports sedan, but with great mileage.  it's much better on the highway, like 42 mpg, than around town.  I average 32 to 35 mpg with a combination of freeway and city driving in marin and sf.  I got 41 or 42 up to truckee and back, and had a quarter tank left afterwards.  I think the 2010s have an updated stereo with better ipod integration...using an ipod with mine kind of sucks.  but really, diesel engines rock.

How about the BMW 335d? It drove really well and comes with fours of free maintenance.

Thanks Yelpers! This is great info, I'll keep tdi on my list and look into more options. I used to have a civic hatchback and luv luv that car, it never gave me much problems of the 9yrs that I had it and maintenance was super affordable.

I love my Jetta!  I don't know about the diesel though...  I have an '04 turbo and it kicks major ass!
