I'm pretty sure this doesn't exist in our fair city, but on the off chance that it does, does anyone know of a nice rooftop hotel pool in San Francisco, ideally suited for lounging (lounging as opposed to a lap pool or an exercise pool)? I'm thinking about something similar to The Standard in LA, except without all the people you want to throw over the edge of the hotel like you would if you were at The Standard.

good question, but never heard on one.

what about just an outdoor pool?

Outdoor, not necessarily rooftop, could be fine too, though rooftop is ideal. In my imagination, I'm picturing something that involves lounging and a hotel pool bar, sunshine, and a nice view of the city.

I know of one in Pac Heights.  Unfortunately it is the roof of a private residence of some rich fucker.

I don't know the specific address. I just heard it cost over $1mill to build.  Anyone got a helicopter?  We can search AND ambush.

Steve, there is no such pool in the city. Plus, if there was such a pool, you know it would soon be populated with the types you described as wanting to throw over the edge.

I am fortunate to have an uncle in the city who has a pool and spa in his backyard here in the city.  His house is up on a hill and has a great view of Bernal Heights, Portrero Hill, downtown, and twin peaks.  I love hanging out at the pool on days like today and I love hanging in the hot tub on cold nights.  Cindy, it's nice to have a rich fucker for an uncle!

If you want to ambush me, you'll have to follow me to san diego next week where the weather is always gorgeous.  There's a great pool down there called the beach and I'll be there.

  1. W hotel, Phoenix Hotel, Del Sol motel near Lombard.  You have to be a guest at all of them but you can sneak in at the W or Del Sol probably.   Hotel Nikko near Union Square has a gorgeous pool - hotelnikkosf.com/images/….  There's also a little pool hidden away at the Handlery, off Union Square.  calpartours.com/SF_Pool_….  Not sure of the drinking and lounging potential but it looks doable.  There are also some apartment buildings with rooftop pools.  The UCSF gym definitely has the most impressive and good looking rooftop pool.  pub.ucsf.edu/missionbay/… - you can rent the space after hours for group events.  Nothing like the Standard though.   Huntington Hotel has a beautiful pool but it's $35 to get in, and more of a tea-and-bottled water setting.  preferredhotels.com/hote…

Two that nobody knows about because nobody ever goes there are the Hilton Hotel in Union Square (images.worldspan.com/ima…) and a funky one at the Cathedral Hill Hotel has a pretty funky pool.  hotelsinsider.travelhero…

Overall, you're in the wrong city if you want sunshine, lounging, and a pool bar.  Vegas?  San Diego?  Cabo?

Or else you can go up to Napa.  Some of the resorts there (Auberge du Soleil, Fairmont, Carneros Inn) have glorious pools.  Probably some closer in, in Marin or the Peninsula.  For a good time with friends you can bring your own drinks and go lake swimming in the Berkeley Hills.

Definitely in the wrong city for rooftop pools, but the right city for just about everything else. :) Sometimes, though, you just want a bit of sun and water.

  2. ...also for sneaking-in potential there's a nice pool at Diamond Heights Village, homes.media.point2.com/p…,

Summary: no, unless you're rich, have a rich family member, or leave SF.

Looks like another Dolores Park weekend for me, which is really a perfectly fine consolation prize.

My friend did some high end video work for this investment banker who had a indoor pool in his 3 floor condo and a personal assistant.

Not San Francisco, and there isn't much of a view, but the Four Seasons in Palo Alto (Four Seasons Silicon Valley) has a nice outdoor rooftop pool and jacuzzi/hot top. Very pleasant.

At the start of the first Dirty Harry movie a girl was diving into a rooftop pool in the City and shot by the serial killer in mid-air!!!
You mean that was all made up???

I like to crash the Holiday Inn's pool in Fisherman's Wharf.  The fence is really low, all the easier to haul my booty over it quickly as not to look suspicious.  Granted the three times I have done this it had been about 3 in the morning.  Also, the Phoenix Hotel pool, also good  for drunken midnight swims, but I'msure that's not the crowd you were going for.

The Dirty Harry scene was shot from with the sniper atop of the B of A building and the pool used was the hotel roof pool of what is now the Hilton on Kearny Street.

My old condo on main street has one. The big art-deco style white building that sits underneith the bay bridge on Embarcadero... Go ring the buzzer and ask for "big jimmy".

Ahaha. Staying at The Standard made me want to die and made me want to kill people all at the same time. I wanted to poke the boobies of the tanzillas to see if they pop like a balloon!

So, you want the roof top pool with lounging *AND* without all the annoying patrons?  This sounds like a day dream--lol...

If you do happen to find this place though, *please* email me.  Seriously.
