Chuck, they will run between probably 200 and 600...check out Home Depot, they usually have good prices:

Actually, that's incorrect. If you want to replace one - it can be anywhere from $5000 - $8000. You need to consider permits installing a new furnace. If you live in an older home, the ducting may have used asbestos, which adds another element.

If you're talking about repairing a furnace, that may be different. Either way, you have to contact a licensed contractor (check license at the California Contractor's Board website) for an estimate.

call gow supply in sf. third and egbert. they sell to contractors. they can aslo provide leads for conctractors for you if you dont have one.

cece is right, there is ALOT of other shit to consider. oh man asbestos is a fucking pain in the ass!!!

home depot is a good place to check prices, but remember, they aint doing shit for you and most the time, the kids they send out dont know jack shit about what they doing.

You might be able to get a new energy efficient furnace installed for as little as $3500, depending on the company you call.  I've recommended Harry Clark Plumbing and Heating for years.  They're in Oakland.

Thanks for all oyur help here!  i got a great contractor and a great price via info here.  Watch out for Mike Winn of Elite Heating in SF.  He seems friendly then tries to sell you the most expensive unit, oh - and don't forget you'll need to pay his friend 1000.00 for unnecessary removal of stuff.  Steer clear of this place -- lots of other great people out there.
