Rotunda (for lunch or afternoon tea)  I often eat there alone and enjoy the view of Union Square.
Of course, I have no qualms - eating anywhere alone.  But places that have good food and a view is an extra plus.
Greens (vegetarian food for lunch and/or dinner).

Bang San has counter space across from the cook.
You get to learn a bit while you eat.

I agree with the view, get some food and go sit in a park or on the beach or something. Also, sushi placs, specifically at the bar (its usually faster too!)

  1. any type of bar - sushi bar, salad bar, or a bar of a good restaurant with a full menu.  The bar at Myth has very comfortable stools, good spacing, and a full menu.  I've also had some decent dinners at bars such at Coco 500, Bacar, Citizen Thai, and Piperade.

Also depends if you're in the mood to chat or if you would like a TV.

If we could do that, no one would leave the house

that's what home delivery is for.

  2. Anywhere is fine if you bring a book, a laptop, some work, a paper....it's kind of fun.  But if it's getting crowded, formal or romantic it's sometimes better to eat in the lounge, the bar counter, or a quiet table away from the main dining room.  I've never seen anyone mind but it would feel a little weird pulling out the laptop at a prime table in a fancy restaurant. ~~~~

^^^Indeed. I eat everywhere alone. It's such a drag eating with people sometimes. It helps to be selfish, egotistical, and snobbish. It also helps to grow up as an only child. Only children grow up to be fantastic loners. :-P

  3. Just do it!!! I did it...actually never have problem eating alone , going to movies alone..........and i am not fat and ugly(well, that's what my kids said...unconditional love i guess)

You should be able to eat anywhere on your own. Cafes are great for this, sushi bars and my favorite, get soemthing to go and eat it in one of our many parks.

Sushi bars with older Japanese sushi chefs who appreciate that sushi dining experience includes interacting with the chef.  You can have the most interesting conversations with some chefs.  Treat yourself and ask the chef to do omakase (the chef will give you what he thinks is the best of the day.)
