1. I moved here from Manhattan in March to be with my same-sex spouse (yes, we're still real married) and we have been eating our way around the various neighborhoods.  We like grubbing at the bar because it gives us a chance to chat with bartenders and locals.  Most every neighborhood is full of nice people, even if the food isn't.  One common theme that comes up when asking about food in other parts of the city is a collective disdain for the Marina crowd.

I finally went to the Marina a month or so ago to try the Tipsy Pig (awesome food by the way).  I thought the folks at the bar were nice.  My husband and I didn't feel any of the alleged elitism or prejudice.  So why all the hate?  Are there real examples or is it just a "they're not as hipster as me" thing?

I don't get it either.  I've never had a problem there.  It's nice and it's clean.  People hate hipsters too so it isn't that.

these statements are made by ugly people that don't get laid.

On the real though, compared to the rest of the city, it does lack the funk that makes SF awesome, but there is certainly nothing wrong with it.

    Sup homie!

  2. The Marina is one of the only places in the city to find attractive women, so I think a lot of ugly mission chicks hate on that. I understand the hate, but it's excessive and immature. Just because you're ugly, work at a used Cd store for minimum wage, and protest in the trees on the weekend....that's no ones fault but your own.

God forbid someone else has more drive than you...

But seriously , the hatin' on the Marina is so 2005. The new douchefest is Zeitgeist, which is easily a million times worse.

    I love the Tipsy Pig.

The thing is, the Marina hate is mostly confined to those people who frequent Yelp...there isn't nearly as much animosity out in the "real world." Personally, the only reason I don't hang out there as much as I used to is because I live too far away. I dig the restaurants, the bars are fun, and you can't beat the scenery of Fort Mason/Crissy Field.

I think it was Keane that once said that the only different between the two polar opposites (M&M) is that  Mission douches wear horizontal stripes and that Marina douches wear vertical stripes.

I think it is interesting.  I think it mostly revolves around generalizations.  Most SF residents come from someplace else, and some after being here, identify with SF as a what they think it should be.  The Marina for them does not exemplify that counter culture, open minded space they think SF should be.

The reality is I don't think many people give it a chance.  Growing up here, I liked the weather of the Marina, but as a teen thought it was not gritty enough, and a yuppie stronghold.  I came here to visit my aunt, and it seemed cool, but I still thought it was not my style.   After getting tired of the Fog of Ingleside, and my now-wife not feeling safe to walk at night, we moved to the Marina.  I thought I might get tired of the buffy and brad types, or that it can be a little corporate at times, but if you actually live there, you realize many of those people usually don't live in the area.  The Marina does have a real neighborhood vibe, but you won't get that from spending Saturday on Chestnut st.  Sure the LuLumon sweat pants for ladies with strollers is a bit out of control, but no more than the tight butt huggers and tats in the Mission, or the played out faux-thug-playa style that I grew up with.   I like that my wife feels safe, that the bus comes on time, there are a variety of decent restaurants in walking distance, and that I don't really have to worry about my car getting broken into.  I love the fog horns, the sunshine, that people walk or are active, and that I can run to the bridge or the Presedio.  I admit that I dress a little better since I moved here, but I think that has more to do with me growing up rather than my zip code.  The only thing that I wish it had more of is more diversity and good cheap eats.  That aside, no complaints.

Is this THE Todd or someone new to pick a fight with?  "Ugly mission chicks?"  Get over yourself.

...and by lacking the "funk" of the rest of the city, KFC means it doesn't smell like pee.

Hating on a neighborhood is a very mid-20s attitude. Kinda like disliking other kids in high school because they weren't into your kind of music or whatever. It shows you have nothing better to do than to constantly judge others (and yourself).

There are frat douches there, just like there are hipster douches in the Mission. *shrug*

Bring your own party and it doesn't really matter where you're at.

Good points, Kapeli.  I go there quite a bit since my husband works there, and I use the YMCA in the Presidio and sometimes walk at Crissy Field.  The Marina would certainly not be my first choice of neighborhoods in which to live (just not my style), but given the choice of only the Marina versus the Mission, I would pick the Marina, hands down.  Safety and cleanliness are key for me.

White American dudes generally bore the living daylights out of me so, um I don't really date them.  That doesn't mean I feel the need to put them down or act like there's something wrong with them.  It's just not my preference...doesn't mean they're not great guys.  I kind of want to punch Todd in the face.

I liked Jeffy's description. If i recall correctly, it went something like,  "The girls here actually take care of themselves and are attractive, as opposed to the mission girls who just shoe-horn their fat asses into a pair of jeans, slap on a white belt and call it a day."

Adam "Kulinary Koala" B.   Hey, welcome from NYC.............the Marina is the closest thing to the Upper East Side
that San Francisco has.  Every city has to have an enclave for the preppy and the elite, that just happens to be ours.
I just wish we had the analog of the Upper West!

The marina is very vanilla. There are some great restaurants there but it is packed with high-5ing frat boy douches on weekend evenings.

I don't hate the Marina. I just find it incredibly boring compared to other parts of the city.

Ps: I find the hipsters in the mission far more annoying than any drunk frat boy in the Marina.

I didn't take it as a personal attack.  I'm a prissy blonde from the burbs so the thought of anyone calling me a Mission chick is absolute hilarity.  I find your classification of a group of women as "ugly chicks" simply because they aren't your type to be pretty damned obnoxious.

  6. Aviviano - Wow, thanks for the UES comparison, totally syncs in now!

I guess the gay equivalent of Marina (and the UES) then would Fire Island crowd in NYC and the dudes that go to Fresh to dance shirtless or drink high mixology cocktails at Blackbird in San Francisco.  From experience, that crowd is a lot of fun to roll with even if it doesn't have much socioeconomic diversity.

Not completely identifying with the straight crowd in the Marina, Mission or Haight, I guess I can appreciate the differences on different nights.  I just like that despite all this hateration, when an outsider comes to any of those neighborhoods and doesn't carry attitude, they are treated nicely by the locals (at least in my experience).

    Totally!

" Oh man, my life is pain. I need to move to San Francisco to find myself , to be artistic, never shave again, and drink cheap beers while protesting against the Man"

Also, bike messengers suck as much as " fratty bro bros" . I hate how they congregate in FiDi eating Dollar Chinese and listening to Fugazi on their cassette walkmans....

  9. Todd - I live in the FiDi (Jackson Square) and there are all sorts invading the neighborhood by day and by night.  The bike messengers don't bother me as much as the tourists and the B&T folks that crowd out the Ferry Building Farmer's Market on Saturday.  Blue Bottle is good, but dang, you must not be from San Francisco if you're gonna wait in like a 45 minute line!!!

I've been working in the Marina for about 6 years now and I get the snobs hear and there and the douchebags, but they're all the same people you'd find in any neighborhood. I don't really understand why the hate is so centered to that particular neighborhood. I've encountered rude bitches at all types of bars. maybe people just really like to hate people with a little bit of extra money.

The Marina is the most beautiful neighborhood in San Francisco...especially that has good restaurants and shopping. The architecture and proximity to the water, GGB, Chrissy Field etc. Its the best for walking around. Plus they have a huge safeway with tons of parking. I'm so mad we didnt move there when we came to SF...instead we moved to Noe Valley....which is full of fugly, smug hippie/yuppies in big earth type shoes, mom jeans from 1982, and political cause t-shirts  w/ a chip on their shoulder about everything. I'd take the Marina over that chit any day.
