    Comedians and Local Comedy Clubs

Did Readers catch the Comment yesterday about the old-time famous Comedian Lenny Bruce?  I am also reminded of another old-time Comedian, Redd Foxx!  Quoting from the Web:

"Long before Eddie Murphy, Andrew 'Dice' Clay or Howard Stern raised the ire of censors and threatened the delicate sensibilites of mainstream American good taste, there was Redd Foxx, arguably the most notorious "blue" comic of his day....."

Call it "blue", or X-rated, Lenny Bruce, Redd Foxx and such, were/are a genre unto their own!  It would be nice to have such a Comedy Club here in San Mateo!

"What the Hell!  We already have/had the Palm Theatre!  Hey!  With George Bush and all the other 'ripe-targets' of today's politics and more..."

Okay, let's Ask-the-Question!  Would such an X-rated Comedy Club, here in Downtown San Mateo, actually get by the 'NIMBY' censors, of this yet-quite-Conservative-area-of-the-Peninsula?

"But WOW!  It sure would do a hell-of-a-lot'a BUSINESS!"

    What do Readers think?

Thomas, as to multiple thread/postings, can't beat T.H., who has the record here... 368 postings in 3 hours!  And since this is a San Mateo Yelp, as to your question, "Where is San Mateo?"... I guess you must be in one of those outlying extremely rural regions of San Mateo (there is no place else, is there?) where they have little 'outhouses' and no telephone service as yet!  Oh, did you remember to get up at 4 AM to milk the cows?

Mister "One Sexy Motherfucker" J. says:

Err...Nelson, you do realize that posting in Yelp 'San Mateo' actually posts in Yelp Talk San Francisco. Because Yelp San Mateo has little to no talk traffic.

    I wonder why that is.....
    *scratches head*

Technically, San Mateo talk threads show up in both SF and SJ talk b/c it's smack dab in the middle.

    368 posts in 3 hours? That's nothing!

Oh, you rural-types, and your hypes!  "Oh, Dear Almighty Lord-of-SF-and-SJ, Deliver Me From Purgatory-here-in-San Mateo!  Besides, my Friends all Drive Porsches, So I Must Make Amends!"

What. San Mateo has nice parks. I like it. My favorite toy store is in San Mateo.

Oh, you rural-types again.  Here in San Mateo, everyone does their everyday work on their iPhone, Blackberry, or what-have-you, while sitting at one of San Mateo's many European-style sidewalk-cafes sipping on their Starbucks!  You SF and SJ -types are so quaint!

I'm a resident of the San Mateo area.  I'd love to see things like a comedy club BUT there probably isn't enough traffic to support a sustainable club like Cobbs SF, in a place like San Mateo.

Nelson are you trying to open up a club???

    James

Sorry, but I didn't find your youtube video very exciting.  Of course, it took my computer 3 hours and 20 minutes to download the 2 minute video.  Guess I'm a 'cheapie', when I can pay but only $2.89/mo for my phone/TV/Internet services over Dial-up from "Big Brother and The Holding Company" (AT&T).  But my patience is satisfied!

As to San Mateo, it would be nice to have more Live Nightlife in San Mateo other than restaurants,,, at last count, about 17 restaurants per block thoughout the downtown.  But they can be interesting, like the recently opened Mongolian Hot Pot, which has a line-up down the sidewalk  almost every nite waiting for seats.  (Of course, over 90% Oriental folks!)  But, more interesting is the 231 Ellsworth Restaurant, right next door, with a Seating Charge of $190 per person for Dinner.  Of course, Dinner is a 7-course meal that would take about 5 hours to eat, with a new bottle of wine in between each course especially selected to match the course-entree.  My favorite wine is a French White Bordeaux, but the 231 will charge you $900 for that one bottle of wine!  I used to get the same bottle of wine at the Playboy Club in SF for only $35 (in 1967), while enjoying a Live Show featuring Lenny Bruce, the Comedian!  Then my wife and I would hop one block over to the hungry i on Broadway, for a Late Show of Glenn Yarbrough, "Live at the hungry i!"

But of course, speaking of the price of a bottle of wine, I understand there is a MacDonald's Restaurant in one of the Casino's in Vegas where you can order a bottle of wine with your 'Big Mac', everything specially-priced!  The 'Big Mac' is only $3 but the bottle of wine costs $63,000!  I guess that's cheap for Vegas!

Anyway, back to San Mateo!  I'm not opening a club but, like I say, I wish there were more Live Performance venues that were really good!  Check my Yelp Review here for the Pioneer Saloon in Woodside, here on Yelp and you'll see what I mean.  When you can have a club that is patronized by the likes of Madonna, the U2 crew, Steve Young, Loni Anderson, Joan Baez, Neil Young, Joe Montana and others... Of course, San Mateo would have to provide a Parking Lot for all the limousines!  I remember seeing a number of limo's in the parking lot at the Pioneer!  Oh, I also remember seeing the Pioneer parking lot filled with Harley's, 'cuz the Pioneer was filled with the Hell's Angels!

So, James, are you going to bring a Top-Class Club to San Mateo, either Comedy, Live Music or?  We sure do need such!  And since we're right here in the middle of the Peninsula, with the price of gas today, I'd bet that something worthwhile like that here in San Mateo, would do a goldmine business!
