1. Wow, this is way too rich for my blood.  $100 for a hot dog?  Would you pay for that?

"In designing this hotdog I wanted to come up with something super tasty and high-end that stays true to the traditional identity of the hot dog,"

Because nothing says staying close to the original hot dog then hundred-year-old Louis XIII, truffle oil, lobster and Kobe beef... Nice marketing gimmick tho.

  2. Matthew - Yea, I'd reather drink or eat all those items separately.  I don't see the point.

David - That's hilarious!  Good plan

It's a wonder, considering teh culinary trend, that they didn't include some gold leaf in that recipe....

Would I try it?  No.  Sounds disgusting.   Yes, more disgusting than regular weiners , and  yes, I do know what they are made of.....

From marketing stand point, it's a publicity stunt. I honestly treat 4 of my great meal for that price and know I'll walk away happy.

I like the name of the hot dog referenced in the article as being the previous highest price gourmet dog:

    "Haute Dog"

    nicely done!

@David-  I have the titanium,  we just need the diamonds now.

I get the marketing behind it, I bet the same people that bought the $999.99 bling app will buy this dog.  For $3  I'll take my ghetto LA street dog!  Bacon and mayo sauce!!!  Mmm!

The article says that this "dragon dog" is more than 10 times the price of their other hot dogs. So regular hot dogs are now selling for around $10? That alone is outrageous.

For $100, I could get WAY more meals and larger portions.
With the cost of living so HIGH in Vancouver, I am sure people would rather have fancy dinners than stand on the side of the sidewalk eating a $100 dragon dog.
I am curious to see how long they stand (from a business student's perspective).

Sorry, its not my type of lifestyle.

    What a joke.

Guess I'll add this to the long list of ridiculous marketing gimmicks.

Would be lovely to have a watchdog verify if he's really using a $2000 bottle of cognac.

I smell something odd with this. $100 per hot dog to save a sinking business?

We can all talk s#@t and joke around, me included...but this $100 hot dog marketing idea worked in my opinion.  Here we are talking about it on yelp and who knows where else. I personally told a couple friends and in this case,  good publicity or bad publicity I believe his business accomplished what they wanted.

I thought I read somewhere in that article he was going to pitch his idea/concept to Dragons Den for $200k... Ah I get it now Dragon Dog.  It's still stupid!  If he was really smart he'd make an organic hot dog and charge $100 to see what suckers pay for it.  Cost would only be ~$5-$10 and all those ridiculous ingredients can be dropped.

P.S I have a problem paying over $3 for a dog unless I'm at a fair and trapped.

  4. I can definitely see some suckers paying for this because of all the publicity, but I'm going to purposely not eat it.

The business owner planned this very well.. Gets a PR blitz and last night he did his pitch to Dragon's Den. Despite not walking away with a deal (he lost $10k in a year of operations), the additional free marketing is golden.

I haven't tried this place, but the Yelp reviews aren't exactly favourable. Japadog is opening a NY location soon I think, now that'd be a franchise I'd put $ in!

Yesterday we had the hot dog combo at Ikea.
Saw the article about the $100 hot dog and thought .    Yummmm....
But then saw the restaurant/ joint it came from.  Yeah, it's a publicity stunt. Jen and I talked about it as we drove past the new Steveston Pizza and their $400 pizza or something.  I love their pizzas.
And pizza and hotdogs are my favourite food!
I love how she (significant other) mentioned that they make this stuff for rich Chinese people with money to waste and try to dupe them into thinking its culturally cool to waste so much money on fast food.  And then I looked at her.  Said I love hotdogs and pizza"  She says "what? You don't waste money on hotdog and pizza.  All you do is eat and poo and waste money! So stupid! Buy me diamonds better eh? No waste money on $100 hotdog.  Better for me diamonds!

I kept driving, things were quiet till the young one said.  I want a guzheng!!! I want to learn how to play this song on my iPod.  I don't like Piano.  Mommy buy for me please?
Slap on my head I said "oy vay!!". I would've tried that hot dog, but I'm too poor now.

I saw the guy present this week on the Dragon's Den and then I saw the paper the day before on this.

$100 is pricey, however, anybody remember about the $1000 sundae in NY?
