We've got so many to choose from, so aside from Vij's (of course), where can I get me the best Indian food in Vancouver? I'm not a fan of buffets (yelp.ca/biz/amber-india-…), BUT will go if the place warrants a visit.

    What say you?

  1. Tandoori Raj just off Fraser Street

I love La Tandoori. Far from fancy but the made from scratch sauces and lack of a set menu makes for a fresh and tasty meal every time: yelp.com/biz/la-tandoori…

Red Fort on Kingsway is excellent too and if you find yourself in Surrey for some reason check out Mahek. yelp.com/biz/mahek-resta…

I can't believe that I didn't make it to any Indian restaurant in Vancouver! Thought I'm a big fan! I guess I'm relaying too much on my Fijian's in-laws to cover this favorite bit of the global cuisine :D

I want to try Vij's now now now!

I've had good experiences at Fraserview Tandoori

Kinda pricey. But $60 got us at least three full meals of "oh my god I'm gonna burst"

If you're on Davie St. the best Indian food is at Ginger Garlic Cuisine of India. They used to be on W. Broadway but moved a while ago. They're at the bottom of the hill a block up from English Bay. They're more informal and a tiny bit cheaper than Judge's, and have better food than India Bistro. We really are spoiled for good Indian food here!

  3. Other considerations in Vancouver:

    Good Morning Panwala

For delivery in Kits I go with Indian Oven Restaurant and order what I know to be good (tried and true)

  4. Go to Surrey. Hit up Planet India. Get Chana Masala with Bhatura. You will thank me.

@Elliott - I don't see any listing on Yelp for that location, and as someone who lives in the West End I would be curious to try it out, cuz I love Indian food. Maybe it's time for your third review?? *nudge nudge, wink wink*

As an Indian/Pakistani who has been there and loves to cook/eat, I have to say the Indian food options in the Lower Mainland leave ALOT to be desired.  Vij's is great, sure, but I don't consider it traditional Indian cuisine - more haute/modern Indian.  My favorite Indian spot is actually a hole in the wall run by an old Indian man and his daughters: Main Kabab Hut 219 49th Ave just off Main St. (btw I wouldn't recommend anywhere else in 'Little Punjab').  The food is exceptional: authentic, deeply flavourful and unabashedly spiced as it should be.  I have tried almost everything and have never been disappointed.  Seekh Kabab, Chicken Tikka, any of the curries, and tandoor naan are all standouts, cooked quickly to order, and the proprietor genuinely cares.  Definitely not a place to impress a date (unless he/she is a foodie!), the furnishings are limited to a couple of tables with plastic tablecloths and you will be served on disposable plates, but if you can get past that it is so worth it.  Perfect for carry out too.

    Hah, subtle @Evilyn ;)

@Saj, I've heard really good things about Main Kabab Hut! Can't wait to give it a go!

@Luisa, do you know if they have delivery restrictions?

@saj thanks for the recommendation on Main Kebab Hut - I walk past it literally every day and never once have I stopped in, because as you say it doesn't look like much ... Will remedy that pronto :)

There's a veggie place on Main St @ 57th called Best Quality Sweets-mostly a sweet shop but they do meals are well and the food is outstanding.

Service can be a bit strange true but it's worth stopping by.

And of course the Dosa place on Fraser St-and the Dhaka Fish & Biryani

I make really good Indian food at home! I have had too many stomach upsets when I have eaten Indian food at restaurants lately.

I took a one day East Indian cooking class thru the vancouver school boards continuing education/night school programs and ever since, I have cooked many Indain dishes at home for a fraction of restaurant prices and NO stomach/digestion issues!
