My throat is sore... :-(  What are some good soup places around? I don't usually go, but I could use some. I'm thinking asian style soups would be best because I want some broth.

The  rice cake and beef Sichuan soup at Ningtu. The broth has that distinct Sichuan pepper numbing on the tongue and throat, a wonderful overall flavour and isn't terribly salty.  The fillings are very plentiful and delicious too!

It should knock it right out of you!

    Feel better soon!

The udon at Minato is pretty good in a pinch, but what I really have been wanting to try is the ramen at Menya. Anyone been?

I'm not too familiar with Ramen.  Maybe we can do a UYE Ramen night so I can lose my Ramen virginity?

Just got back.  Wow! I've missed alot of Yelpin!

Ramen UYE?  I'd love to do one at G-Men or one of the others in downtown, but they're all so busy.
    Could we? Should we dare?

There's the fancy more modern style or the more traditional bowl of Tokyo style and such.  What to choose.

I have introduced this new place to some.  It's in Richmond and alot seem to like the simplicity of the soup.
It has enough space, still new enough it hasn't been discovered yet.  The soup there is not as fancy, but a good start as a base of knowledge and then move from there to the more fancy places in Vancouver.
    This is called Misoya.

Jay, you go to the downtown ones alot.  Which ones would you suggest?
I've never been to Santouka and would love to try it.

Two extreme contradictions in flavor and presentation.

Then we can move onto the Chinese Ramen and the the Korean and Taiwanese!!

Crystal, I've been to Menya and it's pretty good but I prefer the ramen spots downtown more.

I've been dying to go to Santouka but I hear that it gets really busy and line-ups out the door.

One thing I have noted about the more trendier ramen shops is that the soups are very rich.  I've been bugging gmen ramen about this.  I'm wanting less fat, less salt, more veggies etc.  Now I van eat there and ask for "less" which for me is more!
Santouka's soup I hear is good, but it will also clog your arteries.  So eat sparingly.  Maybe we can all go there and firm a huge line.  Menya used to be better.  It's not the same as it was for me from when they first opened.
I'm hoping they made improvements.  I'd love to go there again!

Sorry.... What does UYE stand for?

I love Santouka the best of the Ramen places I've been to, but I've heard it will be closed for about a month.... anyone been past it this week and can verify?

Motomachi has the lightest broth, and they advertise the healthiness. To me, that's not Ramen ;) , but what does everybody like?

(Personally, I think Udon noodle soup or the Taiwanese noodles with cilantro would be better for a sore throat, though!)

Unofficial Yelp Event.  If you want to do one. you can set one up in the Events page, invite people to join and people come!

Motomachi, yes, is chicken and healthier cause less fat.
I guess it depends on the region you're from and if you are a purist and believe that Ramen is Chinese.

Hey! How about an Udon Noodle soup UYE! We can try Gyo-o!

How about Benkei? I know they have other locations outside of downtown too, which could accomodate more people. Since most of these places are relatively small, we should find a place that can sit more? Or perhaps takes reservations?

Oh! and then there's that place in Burnaby.....what's it called again?  The owner is Korean, went to Japan to research noodles and opened up this place???
It's on a corner, east of Metrotown.......It's larger there. I haven't been there in a long time and might be easier for the people east of Van to drop in!
OK once we've got a place figured out, we'll post it up as a UYE.
So we need time, date, place.

Bri and I would love to come. DT or east is best for us. I'm with you Larry, "less is more" ...the lighter the better.

When it comes to cold & flu remedies though, lots of garlic & ginger and sometimes a pinch of cayenne and/or turmeric, in any kind of clear broth with some veggies is best; you'll be feeling much better after a bowl of that and a good nap :-)

What will help you sore throat sweetheart is honey in a jar with freshly chopped garlic in it. Just let it sit in a jar or glass if you will for 15 mins to brew and have as many spoonfuls as you like. It will soothe your throat and cure it in no time .

i've had Ph and Ramen around Vancouver, but nothing that i could really say stands out as being exceptional (i probably just haven't gone to the right places yet).  but when i'm craving soup i always go to Burgoo...good, hearty, comfort food.  burgoo.ca

p.s.  Reena, i see that you posted almost a week ago.  hope that you're feeling better.

I tried to go to Santouka this afternoon but it was closed. I was driving by and so don't know if they were just closed during that particular time or closed for the month.

Like others, I like Motomachi because the broth is a little lighter too. Burgoo is tasty, but if we're talking good comfort food then I'm all about congee. Congee Noodle House in particular!

It sounds like we've got some fuel here for few UYE's (unofficial Yelp events).

@Larry - I'd be tickled pink with less fat and more veggies too. You know I'll go anywhere for a good feed, but it sounds like there's lots of yelpers in the Vancouver area? Perhaps we could do something along a skytrain line?

@ Vincci - where are all the other Benkei shops?

@ Colene - perhaps you want to spearhead a Congee UYE? I'm game!

    2) 3217 West Broadway
    3) 43 east 5th ave (not sure if it's officially opened yet)

I think we're going to do Benkei at one of their downtown locations on a weeknight a week after the Pirate pack event.
Just show up and invade the place!??

I think Colene C is going to do a Congee and Vincci L will setup the Ramen.  Sweet!
