    Helloooo lovely Vancouver yelpers!

My husband and I just moved to Vancouver from London. We found a place to live (phew!) but now we need to furnish it. I have been looking through old threads about this, but as the threads are ancient, it seems lots of the good places have closed down, or when I go to have a look, they are in the totally wrong place on yelp. At least half the furniture shops listed on yelp were gone when I did my first explore to see what is available!

I'm happy to buy a mixture of new and old furniture, but we're only here for three years, so I guess it makes sense to buy more second hand pieces. I don't want to waste too much of the planet's resources!

I really like that mid-century look. I loved the things I've seen in Parliament Interiors in Gas town. There are some beautiful things in places like Inform interiors but I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the prices! $20,000 for a bed is a little out of my price-range!!

I liked the sound of Refind, but when I walked up there it didn't seem to exist! Is it just in the wrong place on yelp, or has that closed down too? yelp.co.uk/biz/refind-va…

    Anyway, we'll need (at least)
    - A bed
    - A sofa
    - Table and chairs
    - Rugs
    - All the things for our kitchen (should I just give up and go to Ikea!?)

I would love to hear where you guys go to find nice things. Do you rely on craigslist or are there some good furniture and homeware shops around?

  1. I have a brand new queen sized box spring and a dresser, if you want it! It has been a huge pain calling around for a charity to come pick it up.

Oops, sorry I pressed send too speedily. I'll send you a pm. :)

  2. Hey, we should perhaps start a talk thread for people who need furniture and have some to give away!

Isnt something like freecycle better for that? I did have a look on the vancouver freecycle board but it didn't list much. I found it really useful for giving things away in London. :)

I like thrift stores/2nd stores for dish ware/glasses.  Try the two liquidation retail stores such as Maynard's and  Direct Liquidation.  Banana Lab in Sapperton, New Westminster for upcycled furniture, it's a little pricey but really cool pieces.

Bed frame and table/chairs go with CL or Vancouver Buy & Sell FB group.

    Mattress go to Ikea.

Rugs go to Homesense, Home Depot, Canadian Tire.

I have spare and for sale:
2 table lamps and 1 standing lamp that are barely used
    2 Ikea square coffee tables
    1 leather ottoman
    2 vertical shoe racks

PM me for more deets.  Welcome and happy home shopping!

Oooh Banana lab looks amazing! Thank you Fonny! That is exactly the kind of place I was hoping yelpers might know about.

Direct liquidation looks hopeful too. I'll take a peek. I couldn't find a retail store for Maynard's...it looks like they closed it.

Have any of you bought things from Structube?

I'm looking online and the prices look really reasonable. One of the stores in Vancouver has terrible reviews and one has a good review...so I just have no idea if they'll be good! I can go and take a peek I guess...

    Hi Josy!

I recently purchased these dining chairs from Structube:
    structube.com/en/eiffel-…

They're amazing! Sturdy, nice design, modern, easy to assemble and does not feel/look cheap. At $40/each, that's a complete steal in my opinion!

I went to the location in Gastown: yelp.ca/biz/structube-va…

I didn't have any issues with their customer service like what the reviewers on the Yelp page experienced, however I was in and out in less than 10 mins because I was just on a mission for those chairs.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks Jennie!

We have those chairs in our flat in London, so we did look at them in structube. They seem just as comfy as the real versions but about 1/10th of the price!

We popped into the location near Granville, and I liked a few things, but when I asked about them, they told me nothing I liked was in stock. It seems like a bit of a strange concept!

The other stores I really liked so far (for new things) were Urban Barn and EQ3. We walked down to West Elm, but nothing looked as good in real life as it does online.

Next I'm planning to look at Moe's.

I'll get around to adding reviews if we actually buy anything... so hopefully I can help other newbies eventually.

There are also a ton of furniture stores in Richmond along Bridgeport Rd (near the IKEA).
    I like this store: moblerfurniture.com

  3. Are you sure you're staying for *only*  three years?? ;)  Two of my neighbours are UK expats that looks to be staying long term.

    Check out this place:

    Thank you both!!

The plan is for three years (we brought our cat with us so it gets harder to take him back to Europe after that) but it could be longer if we can cope with the rain in winter! :)

By the way, I should be the first to say..... ~WELCOME TO B.C.!~, dear persecuted refugee's from Londonistan.
('Course, if it was the other way round.......you'd be GIVEN a luxury apartment WITH furniture.)
