In another thread we've been talking about who we can trust when it comes to home renovations. Luisa D yelp.ca/user_details?use… and myself are both looking for flooring recommendations.

So yelpers, got any recommendations for us and everyone else taking a leap into renos?

We're using Nick at Lonetree Kitchen and Bathroom Designs for our kitchen reno.  He's going to give me a contact for our floors which I'll post when I get it.  I'm holding off on reviewing Lonetree until we really get into it but so far so good.  It's certainly high quality/price which is fine as we have no plans to move so we want it to last a lifetime.

I'm all over home renos. We\re in a different boat it sounds like though - we're renovating to sell, so we've actually changed a few things we were going to do (such as a blue marbled concrete floor in our main bathroom).

Last year we did our kitchen - using friend labor and resources. Some friends did awesome concrete counters for us which look fantastic! If you are looking for concrete counters, flooring, or driveway, I would totally recommend them (their company is No Limit Concrete).

We also have renovated one bathroom; we did the work ourselves... I don't suggest it at all (hich pain in the arse factor). We're gearing up to redo our main bathroom, looking at contractors to assemble it. For fixtures we are going to Home Depot for tub/shower, Ikea for sink/vanity/sink faucets, and Broco for mirrors. I'm looking for flooring today!

The next project we have is flooring. Again, going to look at flooring today. We're doing laminate for sitting room room/hallways/ eating area, then either tile or vinyl for the kitchen and bathroom, and carpet in the bedrooms. I'm checking End of the Roll (flooring is super cheap there). I also saw an advert on Craigslist for Mike's Flooring, they look to have some inexpensive flooring (tile, laminate, hardwood, carpet) and have a deal with price including install and underlya I'm looking into this week.

We're also doing all new lighting. will purchase from Home Depot or Lowe's probably, and my boyfriend's brother is kind enough to be willing to install lighting and new light switches. Lastly we're repainting, we used one contract a few years ago and he was amazing, did the whole place in a day for slightly more than the cost of paint! The contractor's business is called Roll Paint Services; he comes to you with a color book and gives great color advise to boot (plus we painted before I had officially moved in, but I got to put in my opinion as well which was awesome)!

I'll definate share who we use and where we buy stuff as we get stuff done! We're in full out reno mode starting in a few weeks.

In End of the Roll I came across some good laminate flooriing today... and dirt cheap vinyl for my kitchen. I felt with samples in hand - swish!!

I guess with the new tax credit people are looking to renos this year, but my advise is get several quotes and know that the cheapest is not really cheap when you have to re-do the job so don't just go with the low baller.

  1. We used Level One (see my review) for the reno of our condo (kitchen, bathroom, floor and bedroom closet) and we can't be happier. We went with bamboo flooring to take advantage of the sustainable crop.

Bamboo is great stuff because of natural water resistant properties and hardness.

Joe, thanks for the reference here and the review - a good contractor is a rare gem I think, I will totally call them for quote!

Jenni, you mentioned Broco for mirrors. I looked them up on Yelp and it says auto glass and upholstery. Is that the place or do you have the contact info for your place?

Nadine - they do mirrors and windows too, mostly from their "technologies" division. I used to work there and still do contract work for them so I can't review (and, I mean take my bias). I've ordered mirrors through them in the past, it's handy, take the measurements you want. Here's a link - brocoautoglass.com/resid…

Update: My renos are in motions hahaha!

So even though I was conflicted, after looking around we decided to go with Mike's Flooring. We are capitalizing on the laminate and carpet specials; after shopping around we determined this was our cheapest option. I'll review after they're done next week :)

No Limit Concrete is now doing concrete tiles for our bathroom, which I think are being installed the following week (though they shouldn't be because the bathroom reno is scheduled for January). I still need a tile backsplash, so I'm probably going to check out Lowe's - some stuff there is waaaay cheaper than here and worth the trip to America.

For our kitchen floor we are throwing in some viynl from End of the Roll.

Then we're doing fixtures - lighting will be from Home Depot and Vancouver Lighting I think,

Good lucky Jenni! I remember the chaos of renovating our one and only bathroom. Concrete tiles? You'll have to share some pictures with us - I'm curious about how they would look.

After talking to Jenni we called Mike of Mike's Flooring to give us a quote for our floors.  He came yesterday and was very competent. Although we liked the young guy who gave us our first quote Mike beat his price by a long shot.  Their website is professional and he's a busy man.  mikesflooring.ca They do hardwood too.  Our floors won't get installed until mid-February but I'll let you know how it goes.  We hired Nick at Lonetree to take care of our kitchen renovations which start in, gulp, two weeks.  So exciting!  Nick's been fabulous and we're confident that we made the right choice with him.  I can't wait for it all to be over so I can get yelping!!

We also had a quote from Tyler who was recommended by our design guy.  He was very nice and am sure he would do excellent work.  Mike's Flooring definitely beat his quote though.

Anyone heard of Utopia Stone in PoCo??  They have testimonials on their website, but I would like to hear from real live people what they think!
