I was slightly troubled today when I entered a diner, that by all accounts used to be pretty good, only to leave disappointed by what was offered. The catch is that the newish owners seem to be in the process of morphing the place into yet another sushi restaurant. This got me thinking about the ridiculous number of such joints we have down here in Marpole, something I had noticed previously, but today took a turn for the slightly more troubling in my mind.

Seems like a lot of unique and awesome places are closing down or getting bought by new owners and replaced with cookie-cutter Japanese places. It's a trend I first noticed when the construction on Cambie got to be too much for ailing Rasputin on Broadway only to be replaced by a sushi bar that I have no interest in entering. Why should I when I've got half a dozen sushi places within a 10 block radius of my home? I was somewhat heartened to see one such generic sushi bar get replaced by the only Thai place I've spotted in Marpole, but it seems like two more are just going to spring up to replace it.

Any one else fear that Vancouver's streets will soon be ruled by Japanese places and by-the-slice pizza joints as far as the eye can see?

Yu should see San Francisco! Seriously, there are so many Sushi places, (and yet, they are never short of customers.)
Don't worry though, other culinary offerings will prevail. Shwarma anyone?

Im with Roanna there may be a billion of them popping up but with a little effort you will always find 20 countries around the corner ..... I might still be in the sushi bar though haha
