Was surprised to see this post this morning. Refuel is closing. kitsilano.ca/2012/03/14/… Let's see what Trevor Bird does with the space.

Then there's the Ridge and Vancouver Playhouse Theatres closing...

Yeah. The only times we went to the Ridge were for VFF or the twisted animation shows. The seats weren't really comfy so we'd go elsewhere when given the choice. I guess we weren't the only ones.

I am not surprised at all. Survival of the fittest, and that's a good thing. Campagnolo is one of the top restaurants in the city, and I'm sure that he know he can do better, too. I was actually surprised that it lasted that long. Fat Dragon sounds cool.

wow. I remember when Dale laughed at all of the Yelpers' reviews in Scout and gave a "thumbs' up" to the person who slammed them. Remember that? Too bad he didn't take note of honest suggestions.
Dale seemed like a guy who tried really hard, and I find it sad if his businesses didn't work out,  but I don't know anyone who made E and ETap part of their regular rotation. People who worked by Etap said that it took twice as long as any of the regular joints. My last time there they charged me for mayo! Too bad he didn't have any successful business owners helping him if the rumors are really true. Let's hope that the same thing doesn't happen to Bird; only time will tell, I guess.

but on a more positive note, maybe he'll come back stronger, more experienced, etc.  He was in two tough locations on top of everything else.  I think people really did try to support him, but as with everything else, it's survival of the fittest...or maybe for us Yelpers it should be "survival of the fattest." :P

Thanks for clearing that up, Kari! And if anyone does happen upon a mayo fairy, please let me know

    • 2828 friends

um, Mayo came with my burger, Kari. I asked for it on the side and had ketchup.  No, it was not acceptable, not when you want me as a repeat customer. It was not the amount, that mattered, it was the principal.  And I never went back. I liked Dale and his restaurants, and as I mentioned, I am sad for him. I didn't like it when he made fun of Yelpers, mind you.
But he is no longer open, at any rate.  I know that mayo is expensive, I get all that. I didn't even want much mayo, come to think of it. Add it into my burger cost, or whatever, but it's the customer service aspect that keeps people returning and allows businesses to flourish. There are some very successful businesses in that area, and that is due in part to their CS. I am sad that he didn't last, and I hope that the next ones do. But we know the prior businesses where his opened didn't do well, either.
Kari, you should totally open a business (can't remember if you have one).  Given your experience, you know more than many of us Yelpers about running a business/restaurant, and I for one would be the first in line. :) I wouldn't be ordering any mayo though. I don't usually like the stuff. As it turned out, my burger at Dale's was quite dry. lol.

Can someone tell me what happened to the SB on Robson, across from the other one? It's now Artigiano's. I know this is a good thing, but I was just curious. Plus, Art. doesn't have skim milk. I only like whole when it's light pasteurized circa Portola. I don't know any here like this.

ps-one more thing MacDs-non-organic, free, mcchicken sauce; ok when desperate and I only use a third of package.
    Donald's grocery-organic.
Your egg salad idea-brilliant, but I'll just do it on a low-carb bread.
I know what you mean re: sandwiches. I've never tried a pb and J in my life; I find it disgusting. My mom said she lived on them when preggers with me. Could be why? K, back to the thread....

funny thing is, if you look back, I was first to review ET, and that was by pure fluke, I guess. I gave him a five star that time, and if you look at my "rating distribution" this is not the norm for me. I will never forget the fruit flies that were rampant in the br there though, next to the kitchen. Was quite weird.

Another comment of his that I can't forget. I guess someone reacted negatively towards his resto; Dale's response: "Too bad, buddy, we are here to stay." I can imagine that as an artist who was so successful, this must have been difficult for him to hear. He did (and still does) have a lot of fans.

But it reminds me of some management advice I was once given: "When you get a job at the top, you gain confidence, and that's a good thing. But when you start thinking that you're "too good," is when things fail." This might have been part of the problem, but all one can do is speculate. He still did more than I would have done--he started two businesses.

Another problem might have been that he expanded too quickly, but I still think a lot had to do with his two awful locations and his surrounding competition, all of which did not give him an easy road to begin with.

    • 55 reviews

@Rick, I've never been to the diner so I can't compare to the pop up. Only been to the pop up on what seemed yo be a tester pre-opening day. They had a build your own burger menu with options such as goat cheese, blue cheese and fried eggs.  It was a solid burger, quite messy and good actually.  I had ground chicken which is a rare option for someone who doesn't eat beef so for me it was a treat.  Fries were standard and the only option other than a coleslaw but the creamy variety which I'm not a fan of.

I suppose I could cut and paste this into a review instead if hiding it in a thread ;)

I don't see the appeal behind Save On at all other than that it looks good. The food is mediocre to below average, so Rick, I have to say that I agree with you, but I would have said the same a year ago. There is nothing exceptionally wrong, it's just not very good. It's too bad as I can see why it's so popular due to the space/lay out. One only needs to watch Bourdain and three D's to see how disappointed they were in the food, too.

Hard Rock Casino Vancouver. Yes, the legendary Hard Rock brand finally opens its first entertainment complex in Canada in the former Boulevard property in Coquitlam today. Welcome addition to the city entertainment-wise.

It's nice for GCC to target the rising consumer spending power of the Gen Y demographic. Same reason Hollywood rebooted the last Spiderman movie to give it a Twilight feel High School love story. Or why Abraham Lincoln becomes a vampire hunter in Spring and an Oscar movie starring Daniel Day-Lewis in the Fall. Or why James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted the Oscars a few years ago - even if they bombed the message was clear that the said demographic is pretty important. Besides, the Hard Rock and the Palms in Vegas always had this marketing notion that if you get the consumer at a young age then they'll be loyal to you for the rest of their life. So far both properties have manage to stand on their own and stay profitable against the corporate giants in the Strip like MGM and Harrah's by sticking to their market niche.

Gaming-wise, the gaming pie never gets bigger in Vancouver although more players would love to eat it. So a shift to make more revenues to non-gaming aspects like shows, etc. would be good the new Hard Rock Vancouver. With hopefully a hotel in the future. For me, with their location, what they need to improve gaming income is what the River Rock has and its called a Canada Line.

Do you know why @ James N? I know the one on Robson and Thurlow closed due to a disagreement in the lease renewal, but let's hope there isn't more going on...

@James N. That's interesting about the Caffé Artigiano's closing. I wonder if Third Wave coffee business (i.e. Revolver) are affecting those traditional cafe shops. I feel like they're more an educational experience. Like discovering wine, coffee isn't just something we drink to wake up, there's so much more going into that cup. Another is Platform 7 Coffee in Vancouver East Village (Hastings Nanaimo) They give you an opportunity to choose your beans and which method you want. These factors really DO affect the taste. I can't remember if Artigiano does single origin and pour overs? -or is it all blended and over roasted?

Artiggiano was actually one of the first to offer premium single origin beans. And one of the first in Vancouver to use  the Clover. BUT they charged up to $8.00 for it! And, at first it was the only way they served fresh coffee. As you know the Clovers were always breaking down so they eventually started offering French press which isn't as preferred as a pourover.

$8 is SUCH a rip off considering places like Revolver, Agro and Elysian (the owner was the rep for Clover) charge around half that for a pourover. I think most of their customers were ordering expensive coffee as some sort of status symbol. So wasn't sustainable or attractive to true coffee nerds like Roanna and me :)

Artiggiano went back and forth between 49th Parallel and that roaster from San Fran. I was told confidentially that a certain roaster was unhappy with how their beans were being used there.  Last I heard they began roasting their own single origin beans. And they were pretty good. Next thing I know they've expanded all over the city almost overnight.

So yeah Roanna I do think these other places offer more options, a better product and brewed it better as well.

Does anyone know what will open at 575 W Georgia St. I had to look it up, but it used to be the "Butterfly Garden Cafe". I've only driven past, and it looks like they've almost finished renovations. Interior looks like a Meat & Bread type of place. Anyone?

I just read about that and I am surprised to be honest. I am also surprised that the business stayed as long as it did. My best friend and I used to always shop at Oscar's. He was more of a book whore than I. He did not take the bad news lightly.

On a side note, Pizza Fabrika is opening on the 1600 block of Robson, where Rasoee (Indian fast food) used to be for a very short while. On the same block I saw for lease signs being put up on Chui Korean Cuisine today. They did a huge (read: expensive) reno when they opened about 18 months ago. Should've spent there money on a better chef instead...
