1. I'm interested in knowing what are people's thoughts are on tipping? (I know i stirring a pot)
Keeping in mind that now that minimum wages have increased which most likely will be reflected on the menu prices.

    1. Tipping at Restaurants vs
    2. Tipping at places like hair salons, coffee shops.

Also, does anyone else think its unfair that even though I may get the exact same service as my companions, if I order something more expensive, I'm expected to pay more tips?
or the fact that people expect a 15% tip even if they do a crappy job or even just their basic job of serving me a dish.

  2. I don't tip at coffee shops... and depending on how "fancy" a restaurant/salon is,  I'll tip 10-18%. I've seen some massage places say no tipping because they consider themselves a medical clinic,  but others still expect it.

I tip when service  merits it...I absolutely do not tip for standard service....in my opinion tips r for above standard service and when I do min is 10% and for attentive service I tip up to 20%

In ye olden days leaving a tip for great service was a way to ensure good treatment on your next visit. But now it's 2018 and industry standard for normal, average service is 15%. Most servers here are paid low wages because their employers know they'll make it up in tips. Not saying that it's a good system but it's the way it is. If there was no tipping, dining out would be more expensive so employers could pay their servers a decent wage. Non-tippers are basically the anti vaxxers of restaurant patrons.

BrianM: 10% on better than average service? If I was a server I'd hope I never had the misfortune of serving your cheap ass.

People still need to make a living, no matter how much they love their job. People in the restaurant industry rely on those tips. Not saying it's right, but it's the way it is for now. By not tipping, even on standard acceptable service, you're basically taking money out of their pocket.

Nice try trying to justify being a cheapskate though.

    DINING OUT:

a CASH gratuity freely offered is not a 'service charge' to be retained by biz owner or senior staff.
Placed in the hand or pocket directly given to deserving server sans 'filtration' prevents an audit trail / 'taxable event'.

a PREPAID percentage % when paying by credit card / direct debit PRESUPPOSES that goods/services will be what u expect. (Mess arounds / 'disappointments' like crap drink /food are possible)
POST experience is the time to offer your gratuity imho.

    Tipping is not an obligation.
If not freely offered (GRATUITY), it becomes a service charge.
Fine, if that's what you AGREE to.
Any biz which makes you feel pressured is way off the mark imho.

A tip jar? why not ? but personally prefer the cash in hand / pocket of well deserving server.

    Next question:

What if the staff is really nice and trying hard, BUT the 'goods' are crap or kitchen stuffs up, i.e. forgets dietary options, or venue is dirty ? does one 'tip?

I actually had a manager/waitress come back with the bill and cash I left for them and ask for more tips on a very poor service experience.

  12. Joseph, that would make me want to take back what I had given them!

Having worked as a waitress before and knowing how stressful/ difficult it can be, I typically tip about 10% and 15 - 20% for exceptional service. I don't tip when people act like they're owed a tip or rude, such as some taxi cab drivers or bad service, though.

  13. Joseph - I had a similar experience! I was at a restaurant where everyone working there was racist. My partner, who's Caucasian, had her water filled and mine left empty. I had to keep drinking from hers. Even when she told them to fill mine, they didn't. Her food showed up, the table next to us got their food (they arrived 30 mins after us or so) and my food was nowhere to be seen. We asked and the server said they were still working on it - funny because the table next to us ordered my exact same dish and mine wasn't ready? She ate hers first and when mine arrived, it was stone cold and the cheese was melted but hardened and the bread was soggy from sitting out too long. I complained and they told me I'd have to pay for a new one. I just ate it because my partner said to not make a scene at one of her favorite restaurants (obviously not one of mine...). The bill came and I tipped 10%. As we were leaving, the manager came and said that he can't let me leave with just a meager 10% tip and that he requested a minimum of 20%. I declined. They said they'd call the police. My partner again asked me to suck it up and pay the 20% because she didn't want a negative experience in one of her favorite restaurants.

Apparently there's lots of restaurants out there who feel like they're owed a certain percentage for tip regardless of customer service. I feel like if you're expecting it, you might as well raise the prices on the menu to make up for it since we can't refuse to pay that, but we can refuse to pay tip.

@Arleen C: What restaurant was this?! I don't want to go there if that's how they act.

  14. @Jessica - don't remember as it was over a decade ago. It was by the beach about an hour from Palo Alto. Definitely the worst dining experience I've ever had.

If the service is bad don't tip at all. Leaving a small tip ( less then 15% ) doesn't show your dissatisfaction with the service, it just shows you are cheap. So if you are happy with the service leave at least 15%.

Of course this isn't set in stone, just the way I do it.

  15. I keep it simple:
    below average = zip..
    average = 15%..
    above average = 20%

I know someone who hasn't gotten any of her tips on debit, VISA, MC from her workplace in almost 6 months. So many shady biz owners do this stupid bullshit, pocket the funds and leave the employees to hang out and dry.

I'll only ever tip in cash now.

  16. That's terrible, Mira!  Now I'm curious to know which restaurant, so that I can boycott them!

I tip at the least 15% if the food is good and average service because most servers have to tip out. It's a different percentage for restaurants but on average its 5-6% on sales. So that means if you don't tip the server, he/she has to take it from tips from other tables. There were days when I worked as a server where I would take home nothing or 10$ because my tip out was the majority of my tips due to the fact that no one tipped or that many people paid with gift cards. (Gift cards, we have to tip out on the full amount of the food. EX- 75$ bill, paid 50$ gift card, 30$ ($5tip) cash, the server still has to tip out $4.50 (6% tip out)

  17. I've been to two Chinese restaurants (both in Edmonton) where the service was horrible.  The one place totally forgot about my order.  I didn't tip and they pointed it out and asked why I wasn't tipping.

  18. You should have said that you forgot to tip! Ha!

  19. 20% minimum no matter what.

  20. ... biting my tongue .. I'll just say "buffalo bagels" to that!!!  :-)

  21. 20% minimum?! Man...

  22. 2 questions
How much do you tip a cab driver ?
    And
When tipping servers do you tip on the total or total before tax

  23. Depends how good the driver is.. anywhere from 10-15% and I've not tipped at all if they sucked or drove like they were on Fast and the Furious and I get off the car with sweaty palms and my heart is beating fast.

Servers I go by the total.

  24. I had a moment of weakness on the weekend: had a really shitty server who scared me and I still tipped. :( He did not deserve a single penny,  he was really rude.

  25. Daisy -- I'm interested in reading your review!

  26. Years ago (before Yelp!) I had a really rude waitress.  I was going to tip her, but because of her rudeness and assumptions, I only tipped her a couple of cents, and that was simply because I didn't want to ask for change!

If someone is outright rude (I don't mean poor service, but RUDE), I will tip nothing.

They kinda get you know. If you use your debit card constantly in coffee shops, you notice that tips go in first and then the total amount. It really is annoying.
