    Hello Yelpcouver!

I'm planning on coming to town some time this summer and would love to know about some of the best dive bars in Vancouver. You know, those dark, beer-soaked joints with crusty carpets, filthy bathrooms, and a solid regular cadre of just-as-crusty professional drinkers. The kind of place where nobody would even bat an eye if you took a header off of your bar stool.

Where, my friends to the north, can I find the best of the best dive bars in your fair city? Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers!

I am trying to think of a Ha-Ra type joint... The Cobalt can get pretty dirty at times. I am sure some other Yelpers know a few gems. I am laughing about the falling off the bar stool. I fell down a flight of stairs onto a dance floor in New Zealand on my 20th birthday. And not an eye was batted! Hahahahahaha

I am gonna have to think a lil more about this topic.

Anyone know if the Ivanho (sp?) is still around.

    The Ivanhoe's a classic.

And to bust stereotypes about North Van being yuppieville, you can't beat the Lynnwood, right beside the Second Narrows bridge: yelp.ca/biz/lynnwood-inn…. Haven't been there in ages myself, but I'm pretty sure it's still as down-n-dirty fun as ever.

The Brick House on Main St.
Haven't been myself, but by the sounds of it, I hear it's quite a dive.

Peter hit the nail on the head... Cobalt is defo the dive-iest of bars. Closely followed by the Ivanhoe.

I live in Burnaby, and there is another good dive in Coquitlam, called the Rhino Pub.

Wow - Rhino's I hadn't thought of that one! I'm going to have to say Boone County in Coquitlam is Dive-esque (and country western too!)

    How about Pub 340?

Post discussion between me and my house, we figure Pub 340, The Cambie and The Brick to be in the realm of acceptable. To nail it for dive, we would  recommend The Metropole on abbott at hastings. Unfortunately, word is that it got bought by Donnelly "we like it bland" Group so it might not be a dive for much longer.

Perhaps a little less rancid than the other places, but still pretty divey and pretty central is the Bunker on Robson, between Jervis and Broughton. It's one of the few places in Vancouver that has neither windows nor a food menu. Straight drinking on way outdated furniture and screaming over too loud music. It can be fun, for sure. I'd certainly prefer it to the Cambie, unless you enjoy huge crowds of uber-obnoxious adolescent backpackers, and both the Ivanhoe and the Cobalt, which, I confess, are just too damn divey for me. If you can't use the bathroom without a Hazmat suit and are constantly worried about standing too close to people, for fear of either getting pickpocketed or accidentally stuck with a dirty needle, it kinda encroaches on my general enjoyment. But that's just me.

@ Nestor: Funny! Hazmat suit...I've never been to the Bunker...probably because of the no-window thing.

I am adding the Penthouse to this list - I know it's a strip club...but it's got all of the stickiness on the bar, floors, seats and tables that I associate with a dive...plus the bathrooms scare me = dive bar in my books!
