After a week of searching I've finally compiled a list of 20 different healthy spots in Vancity. But the perfectionist in me needs more info. What are some places I HAVE to try while I'm visiting your lovely city? What veggie-based places are overrated and should be avoided? (I'm not actually vegan/vegetarian so if you can think of any other places that can't be missed then feel free to mention them)

Tera V Burger has the most amazing veggie burgers and vegan desserts. They taste like the real thing! They're not the healthiest as it is kind of vegetarian/vegan junk food but it's a must try in my opinion. Great treat. Aphrodite's Organic Cafe is also a must try. They're all organic and while they do serve animal products, they have a ton of vegan/vegetarian options.

Chau VeggiExpress, Meet on Main (Meet in Gastown), Foundation, Budgies Burritos and The Acorn come to mind if you want strict vegetarian or vegan places. Ask for Luigi and Tavola for house-made pasta. There's Quejos which has pão de queijos, Brazilian cheese buns.

Sushi is pretty healthy if you want non-vegetarian options. But yeah there's a ton of options for that.

Yes on Chau Veggie.  I'll never give up my meat but I'll happily come here for their Golden Temple bowl and the beach chips (taro root chips with tofu paprika dip).  They also have an amazingly big selection of vegetarian / vegan desserts, I was pretty impressed.

Acorn too, and Meet on Main.

Avoid Foundation.  Way overrated, in my opinion.  It was one of the restaurants that started early on vegetarian food, but a lot of the new ones are so much more creative with their menu items.

  1. I agree with Becky, foundation is incredibly overrated! I like Nuba, especially the gastown location :) happy eating!

Acorns great! Also heirloom granville and Bandidas Taqueria! I don't think anyone has mentioned them.

Totally agree with the comment on Foundation. Super overrated!

Indigo Age Cafe is a neat little hole in the wall type place. It's also a Kombucha bar. I would say it's more of a lunch/drink stop than a full dinner meal place. Bonus: it's super cute inside!

Does Bandidas still put Red Cabbage on Everything?

At some point they decided to leave the Mexican theme behind and the food turned into standard Hippie Glop with added Cabbage-whether you wanted it or not.

It's nice that they don't charge extra for shitty attitude from slow poke staff.

  2. Meet on Main is a huge hit for me. Think comfort food but also healthy options. I also love Iki Sushi for there take on veg friendly Vegetarian California Roll.

  3. Oh wait. The Dish on Davie is completely a whole in the wall but so delicious and fresh. Check out this place!!

Shizen-Ya is not in any way a vegan or even vegetarian restaurant.

  5. Conrad Y OP asked for anywhere that is not to be missed, vegan/vegetarian or not :)

I'm not in Vancouver yet, but thanks for all the recommendations! Hopefully I get to knock out most of these spots. If not, I'll do it next year when I come back.

In North Van check out Buddha-Full Cafe and Cafe by Tao, both in the Lower Lonsdale area.
    :-)

  6. This is such a great thread! Glad this will stay searchable, I've book marked a few as well :)

Ugh to Foundation. It's gone downhill. I love most of what's mentioned. ..meet on main for my burger and comfort food fix, Chau Veggie for the eclectic and fun and so damn satisfying...Heirloom for a little upscale without the Hipster pretentiousness, Budgie Burritos for THE BEST sloppy hot and spicy time u can imagine with food, Bandidas on commercial simply blows me away. The baked Leona Gayle burrito and that side salad from heaven...and cheap cheap tacos! Sweet Cherubim on the drive is also a yummy cheap spot.

So I tried Anh and Chi as well as Dharma Kitchen and A+++++ for both of them. Super tasty, although I think I preferred Dharma. I also tried budgies which was... Meh. I'm not a big Mexican food person so it just didn't interest me very much.

I sampled a Tera V burger and I was NOT a fan. It tasted like a McDonald's burger which was pretty disconcerting. Meet on Main makes a great vegan burger though, I couldn't even tell that it wasn't meat.

Sweet Cherubim on the Drive or The Naam in Kits.

  7. Maple Grill on West Broadway serves kosher with very good vegetarian items. The lentil stew is fabulous, the grilled eggplant tender and loaded with tomato and tahini. Salads are hearty with a light dressing. Most items have a Mediterranean seasoning- and the vegetables are always crisp and tasty!

Gave up on Foundation years ago -

I actually went to Foundation and thought it was pretty good. I didn't order a burger though, I had a tofu scramble? It was interesting.
