Was having a conversation about food/eating weirdness/oddities/routine with my friend.  The friend will lay out his McD's nuggets, fries, sauce and then burger and eat in that order.  I like to pack my food in reverse so that when you flop it onto a plate at work it is in the right side up.

    What's your food/eating/culinary personality?

  1. Is enjoying dim sum for breakfast an oddity?  If so, that's definitely one of ours.  We do dim sum in a neighbourhood place, and although the 'open' sign is not switched 'on' until 9am, the door is unlocked early, and we, and most of the other regulars to the place arrive between 8:00 & 8:30am.  We catch a table, make our own tea, and chat, until the servers arrive and do their thing.

For many, I suspect a touch weird or odd, but for us, for the past 3+ years, it's been fun, and has become almost a tradition.

@John, that's a great tradition, we used to have to go with the family every weekend and dreaded it. Now, I regret not appreciating it more.

@Dawn, dim sum is good for breakfast and lunch.  Sometimes, for the late-risers it can go on till 3pm before they shut the restaurant down to prep for dinner service.

I dislike the crust of bread and will peel off one edge of crust on a sandwich and eat just the good stuff.

Your boy Caspian drinks Worcestershire sauce. It started with tasting a dash if I was cooking with it. Now I pour a finger of it into a shot glass and sip it. I love that stuff.

Ha, Caspian that is definitely an eccentric habit!

My bites are relative to the size of the portion - lots of food = big bites, small amount = tiny bites.

I also have a terrible habit of saving food 'for a special occasion' - which usually means I have stuff in my pantry for months because it's not a special enough occasion... So weird!!

  2. I don't think this is an oddity, because I'm pretty sure other people do this too. But you know the Danish butter cookies?  (Royal Dansk, Copenhagen, etc)  well I eat them in a particular order:  the pretzel shaped ones first, then the swirly shaped ones, then the rectangular sugar ones, then the other ones last.

Come on, I know you do it too!!

I dip Kit Kat bars in the peanut butter jar. I'm convinced they were designed for just that.

I also take apart Fudgeos, dip one of the biscuits in my coffee and make double stuffed Fudgeos out of the other halves. Feel free to judge me for I know it is wrong.

I never eat my crusts either. I'm a grown ass man. Ain't no one gonna make me eat my crusts if I don't wanna.

@jasmine, I totally get you! I eat all the sugared pretzel ones first, then all the sugared rectangle ones and then I'm done with the tin.

@dan, how about McDs french fries in their vanilla soft serve...Mmmm, yum!

  3. @Fonny & Jasmine, my friends and I have a theory about those Danish butter cookies.  Those cookies really only get passed around from Asian family to Asian family to Asian family.  A constant re-gifting, until it gets too stale and someone eats it.  Very few people actually buy it.  =P

    • 52 friends
    • 99 reviews

i'm ok with that...it's true, I never buy them and it's not even expensive!

  4. BTW, I only eat the sugar crusted ones, and leave the rest - and I only eat them at my parents place because I don't buy them and none of my friends buy them!

  5. Herman, my white grandparents always bought them. And I used to work at a store that sold them, abs tons of people (not just Asians) bought them. I once bought them when they were on sale at my former work place, and had a party. My friends are them all (and funnily enough, in the order I eat them).

  6. I almost bought some in Denmark cuz they had cool tins. But I decided to buy another kind of cookie by Royal Dansk. I'm eating them right now.

  7. If I was to break open a bag/box of smarties and spread them out on the table or plate .... would you eat in them in any particular order of colour?  (it's been a long while, but I believe I'd still go for the green first!!)

If it was a bag of wine gums, it'll be the green ones first and then the yellow ones and then that's it for me.

Omg Fonny. Can we share a bag? I hate the yellow ones. I throw them out and only eat the black, green and red.

We'd have to fight over the green though.

I eat ketchup on a lot of food and get teased for it- especially when I eat it on eggs which i don't think is that weird. I usually have to eat all my maccas fries before i touch the burger. I LOVE when you make a ham and tomato sandwhich and it makes the bread soggy.  I also eat and enjoy vegemite- but i am Australian

@Fonny I know - I don't think I  properly expressed how much better melty bosom warmed smarties are.   I'd use my hands but years of experience has taught me that your hands get sweaty and the colour runs off on your fingers.  No bueno.

@Dan, everyone show up with a bag of wine gums as their "chips".  The colour of smartie you find on Rebecca  corresponds with the same colour of your wine gum that you have to give up...and then..I don't know what...

Only time I like soggy bread is when it is covered in melting cheese: French onion soup.

once I was out of pepper when making eggs and only had lemon pepper. Now instead of using lemon pepper I out fresh lemon juice on any fried or poached egg.

I have also been cooking with fresh blueberries and or mangos when cooking seafood long before I saw any chef do it and I am no chef.

Finally, I love buying savory spinach and cheese crepes and then dousing them in cottage cheese and jam. The savory and sweet really work well. I would never do this in a restaurant of course.

Last weekend I was in the mood for an omelet but also in the mood for a runny egg yolk.  So I compromised and made an omelet and then a sunny side up egg on top of the omelet.  OMG!

I'm gonna have to try this lemon juice thing on eggs..

honestly I love it on fried eggs! no idea why. I just squirt it on when cooking. Think about it; in restaurants they always have an orange Slice next to it (a bit of a stretch) Fonny I could walk u thru how I would serve the crepe and u might like it...I think it's because they remind me of perogies with a bit of sweetness...but maybe they r more of a hangover choice...been awhile lol

  8. I've never used lemon juice when preparing eggs .. sounds like something to give a try!!

I love to use to lemon juice when cooking poultry, especially turkey.  My favourite way of cooking a turkey hindquarter (or leg or two) is dusting with (my own) spiced crumbs and such (always including cayenne and ginger in the makings), then placing in a shallow 'bath' of lemon juice in a large, corning ware dish, covering with a piece of wax paper, and cooking "low & slow" in the microwave.  The result - moist, tender, and so tasty!!
    Cheers!

Sorry John...read it too fast! Will try sometime. ;)

  9. J N ... no problem.  People I've talked to often find it a touch weird that I would cook turkey (and chicken) in a microwave, but we much-prefer it prepared this way (as opposed to conventional oven) - the end product is so moist and tender, and the condiments really seem to do their thing during the cooking.

I believe using the lemon with turkey is better than with chicken, primarily because the turkey is cooked on low heat, and long, whereas chicken tends to be cooked at high heat, and rather quickly.  The lemon really seems to do its thing better with turkey, and brings out the flavour better, etc.  But maybe it has something to do with counteracting the "richness" I find with turkey, as opposed to chicken?

I use lemon in much of my cooking, often with a touch of vinegar added (it does wonders to pork, fish, and etc.  Eggs next!!  :-)

Made pan seared radishes with lemon juice and parmesan, so good.

Here's another one for ya, Tabasco and chicken noodle soup.  Tabasco addict here.

  10. Fonny ... the pan seared radishes sound like a must try for us.  We buy the large lo bok or diakon Chinese 'radishes' often, and have been looking for different ways to enjoy them.
I've never given tabasco a 'real' try .. my lady says I should "go for it" .. guess what's on the shopping list for tomorrow?!!  :-)
... at our advanced years, enjoying any food these days, is all about trying to stimulate what taste buds we have left!!  :-)

I like to put daikons in soups and stews, really elevates the flavour.

Half the radishes, par-boil for about 4 mins, sear until almost translucent but still a little crunchy.  Turn off heat, squeeze lemon juice, sprinkle parmesan, serve.

At 79 cents a bunch, you can't go wrong.

    Yum!!!

  11. "I like to put daikons in soups and stews, really elevates the flavour."
    Yup, we've done the same!!

Oops ... forgot to get the tabasco this morning - it's now in a reminder for tomorrow's shopping!!

Shila, I'm trying not to cringe on the egg yolks and fries part...but...I guess it's sorta the same when my hashbrowns accidentally gets egg yolks on them.

Bears, I will have to try that this weekend!  I love mustard!!

  13. I sometimes separate my food by colour. For example- If I'm eating skittles, I eat them in order of least favourite to favourite. All the green ones first, then yellow, purple, orange and finally, red.

I also don't like food touching other food on my plate. I like my veggies away from the meat or starch. This only goes for foods I'm serving myself. I used to be more strict but I've learned to ignore it in a restaurant.

I'm ok with sauce or gravy on my food, but only if I know it's going to be there. I hate surprise sauces on my food. If it's not on the menu, I get quite agitated if it shows up on my plate.

That being said, I love the green Tabasco on eggs :)

If I have multiple items on my plate, I will sometimes eat my food in order so that I end up eating my favorite food on the plate last. Usually this means eating my vegetables first to get them out of the way :D
A somewhat gross oddity.. I love milk.. with everything. Well, nearly everything. You've got your regular pairings like with cookies, chocolate cake.. but my favorite pairings are with chips (doritos or anything spicy), and tomato-sauce based pasta (lasagna especially). Most people gag when they find out my quirk, but I know at least one other person who also likes drinking milk with everything, so I know I'm not alone!

  15. "I use wooden chopsticks to eat popcorn"
    ... sounds like fun!!!  :-)

  16. Becky ..... we've been dining at Korean restaurants of late .... wow, those thin, metal chopsticks (that we've encountered at some places) are not the easiest to use!!  :-)   I would definitely prefer the larger, wooden ones for popcorn, et al!!  (and most other foods too!!)

At least you won't over eat! Imagine trying to binge a bowl of M&Ms using chopsticks?!

John, those chopsticks are awful, even for a seasoned chopstick user myself.  I learned on solid silver chopsticks while my grandma watches me to slip up so that she can whack my knuckles with her silver chopsticks.

  17. Fonny  .... enjoyed your story!!  They are difficult chopsticks to use .... will see how I do at lunch today!!  :-)
