Do you like living in Walnut Creek?  How is traffic and parking?  How is the commute to SF (both car and BART)?  Are the homes nice?  People?  Pet friendly?  Are there a lot of places to go out (restuarants/bars)?

Do you like living in Walnut Creek?  As with any other place I've lived, it has its good points and bad points.  One of the good points is there are a lot of hot women here, mostly found during the night near the bars.

How is traffic and parking?  Less than desireable at times, considering this isn't that big of a town.  There are some free parking complexes, but most charge.  Beyond that you're parking next to a meter, if not your home.

How is the commute to SF (both car and BART)?  BART-wise it depends on what's going on in Oakland.  There's usually some jackass who jumps the turn-style which causes a delay for everyone.  Car-wise just depends on what traffic into SF is like that morning.

Are the homes nice?  There are some really nice homes and there are some shit boxes, just like any other town.  But the shit boxes here are pretty expensive.

People?  Yes, there are people here

Pet friendly?  I haven't heard of anybody killing pets, so I'm gonna go with 'yes' on this question

Are there a lot of places to go out (restuarants/bars)?  Surprisingly, yes.  At first glance, it doesn't seem as such, but there are several places to dine and drink, especially considering the size of the town.

I love when people give obnoxious answers to questions that they clearly knew what I meant.

The problems with Walnut Creek are two:
    (1) there are no walnut trees there
    (2) it's Walnut Creek.

    WC is ok...
if you have lived alittle and want to settle in then
you will find lots of similar minded people doing the same.

    not diverse and rather conservative.
great parks and tons of things to do in the east bay...
as far as nightlife...the area still rolls up early.

Joe, it's not Walnut Tree Creek.  It's Walnut  Creek.  The creek flows with an endless supply of walnuts.  Having walnut trees here would just be redundant and unnecessary.

I lived on the border for a while of Concord/Walnut Creek and I liked it. I wouldn't live there long-term without a husband, a dog & 2 kids. But, if you're into the burbs, shopping & white people, it's a pretty awesome place.

Frank, the pet friendly part is 100% correct, but stop lyin to the man about parking.
You can park anywhere there, it's a parking wonderland of meterless, driveway parkin.

T A, I think Jodi is a chick... or else that's the softest, prettiest man I've ever set eyes upon.

Wait!  No, the softest, prettiest man I ever set eyes upon was Kirk Cameron while he discusses intelligent designe to hispanic gang-bangers in LA.

Parking is a bitch.  It's hotter than crap in the summer.  It's the hub of the East Bay, for whatever that's worth.  Shopping is good.  Places to eat are okay but nothing holds a candle to San Francisco.  It's the 'burbs so expect the expected.  Very pet friendly.  Look, this is where you go when it's time to get married and raise a family.  You know, then get divorced so you can be a cougar at Bings and 1515!  LOL!

Many of haters who will appear on a thread like this are either under 30 / hate suburbia, or have a problem with Walnut Creek looking like "a Limp Biscuit" video...being middle class / upper middle class.

The Creek is one of the few cities in America that runs a surplus on their budget every year! Once a sleepy town, it now offers more than a few places to go out on weekends, multiple various eateries, and a diversity that it didn't have 20 years ago. (But it's all relative: if it used to be 95% Caucasian, now it's what, 70%?) This surplus also allowed them to fund their own new downtown library (under construction) without new taxes.

The downtown area has two sections - the older, criss-cross X-Y streets that include Main and Locust... and offer some of the older shops (most are dying out due to WC's high prices), mixed in with food places that include Thai, Persian, Sushi, Mezican, and Italian... not to mention the two 50s diners. Along with these are the multiple shops that cater to women that I rarely go into. The Broadway Plaza area is the newer section which offers Nordstroms, Tiffanys, etc.

Several times I've had to decide whether to live in one of the Bay Area cities, or The Creek. Yes, it is suburban. But with BART, you've got easy access to Oakland/Berkeley, as well as The City. The Creek offers far better summer weather, parking, and minimal crime. And now it has the phoo-phoo trendy / ethnic places to eat, too. It also has proximity to the wine country, Berkeley, etc. (WC offers a huge selection of apartments/condos now offered in Alamo, Orinda, and Danville.)

With this progression, there are also multiple new movie theatres, a new WC Regional Center for the Arts, and an "arty / independent" movie theatre. (The Domes in Pleasant Hill.) Concord next door also has numerous ethnic restaurants for exploration.

I'd say the choice is really city vs suburban; nightlife (bars, nightclubs, strip clubs) vs a bit more low key entertainment (BBQs, friend's parties, etc.).

If you have that viewpoint, then ...

SF = hipster posers & art posers?

  1. I love Walnut Creek.

And I gotta tell you the people who don't like it, either do not live here or are teenagers.

Traffic is sometimes pretty bad, but on the whole, eons better than San Fran.

Commuting by car is pretty sucky. I'd say BARTing out is your best option. However I will warn you that on weekdays about 5/6 o'clock, coming back from the city it will be crowded as crazy hell in the BART train.

The homes are gorgeous. Gorgeous. But again it depends on where you live. I love the downtown area.

The people are, well.... Walnut Creek people. Most are pretty snooty and if you work in downtown Walnut Creek, you'll find they're horribly rude to their cashiers and such. But everyone is very pet friendly and there are two parks within driving/walking distance as we have a lot of open space here.

There are a few places to eat, not overabundance like SF, but a couple well done restaurants with friendly staff and good food.

But the main reason I adore WC is that their shopping is awesome.

Because the area is so affluent, the consignment of designer clothing, the thrift stores, and the all around regular shopping is really good.

The people may be meh, but for the trees and the weather and the wonderful housing and shopping, I love living in WC.

    Jodi V,

I moved to Walnut Creek from Daly City 4yrs ago. It took me about at least 2 yrs to figure out where the heck everything is in relation to WC. I live 5 minutes driving distance from WC Bart, 25 minutes if walking. My daily commute is about 35 minutes. Not bad at all. The people are nice here, but stay away from the downtown shopping district called Broadway Plaza. If you like stuck up cashiers and snooty people they are all there shopping and clogging traffic down town. There is also a small public park called Park Place where they people bring their kids and dogs, but mostly I think the smarter people hang out at Heather Farm (actually a park with a man-made lake).

Housing-wise you will find a lot of nice looking house up towards the hills, townhouses and condos everywhere. Prices are high. But with the economy the way it is, maybe you get lucky and get a great deal now. WC has a great school district. I should know I help pay for all the bonds that other homeowners seem to vote for every f*ing election. There is currently a new WC library being built with private and public donations. That I can get behind.

The weather is smoking hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter, but the fall is very gorgeous. I love the autum when the leaves change colors. The kind you get from the East Coast.

Places to eat? Hmmm...I face the same dilemma every night? Because most of the restaurants close by 9:30pm. Only bars in the down town area stay later. For good eats, I venture to the neighboring towns of Pleasant Hill and Concord. Downtown PH has a major Century Theatre and restaurants all around. Concord is a lot bigger town and has better and cheaper restaurants to eat.

Overall, I like living in Walnut Creek. I grew up in SF so it was a big change but I don't miss the concrete jungle. Here there are mountains and lots of trees. And of course I have beautiful Mt. Diablo to look at every day.  If you plan on moving here, you will definitely need a car. The public transit is a hassle. Definitely not as user-friendly as the Muni system. Here you have to wait every 30 minutes and sometimes longer if the buses don't  show on schedule.

You win some, you lose some. But iif you get bored, you can always hope on Bart to Berkeley or  SF.
