There is a Cheese Steak Shop on Watt Ave in Sacto.  I have never been to that location but CSS has a Bacon Cheese Steak (Johanna likes bacon!).  I had a Garlic Steak today, had whole cloves of garlic in it!!  My favorite though is the Mushroom Spinach Steak with lots of sweet pickles, MMMMMMMMM!

I LOVED the DeVere's burger at the Burger Battle last month, even so much as to cast my vote for it, but i went to DeVere's to have another go at it, and it was a let down.  Maybe it was a fluke!

For the best value in Sacto burgers, I like Faisal's Halal Market on Fruitridge next door to the original Squeeze Inn.

$2.35 + tax gets you the "spicy burger" with cheese. Add fries and a drink, and you're outta there for under $5.

I first tried it back when the lines at the original Squeeze Inn got so outta-hand in the wake of the Food Network TV spotlight. I noticed Faisal had a sign that said "NO SQUEEZE INN PARKING, WE WILL TOW YOU" and another sign that said "WE ALSO HAVE BURGERS". I sensed a bit of attitude in the signs, so I got intrigued.

There was no line at Faisal's. The only wait was for the prayer to end. One of the employees noticed me at the counter while we was praying, and he momentarily paused and put up a finger as if to say "One minute, please!", and then continued to pray.

The service was quick and friendly, and the burger was obviously hand-pattied if not ground in the back room from a local Halal farm near Elk Grove. You could taste the difference in the meat. Grassy! Just like the stuff that Eel River and Prather Ranch sells at places like the local Co-Ops, Nugget, and Whole Foods.

I'd expect a burger like this to cost triple.

It's not the very best burger, but it is very good, and for the price, it is the best value.

If you wanna pay more and make a serious run at a possible "best burger", ask them to make you a burger out of a Chapli Kabob. They did it for me when I asked nicely. That was tremendous!

    • 720 reviews

Actually, the last time I was there it was five dollars out the door for the combo.

Joe, I just got back from Faisal's, and now I must retract my glowing recommendation. It's under new ownership and management since last week. The combo is now $5.99 + tax. The menu is completely different. They have burgers (beef or chicken), kabobs (chicken, beef, or lamb), gyros, and pizza. The pizza toppings did not include kabobs, so I asked the guy if you could get kabobs on a pizza. He said..."Uh huh....Next week!" I also asked him if I could get chapli kabob served as a burger, and he said "That is coming...Next week!".

The burger was not nearly as good as it used to be, but it was alright. I'd compare it to a burger you might make for yourself at an informal family & friends BBQ at the park. The beef didn't pop with as much grassy flavor, so I think they use a different source. There was no "spicy burger" option. Also, the monthly membership option seems to be a thing of the past.

I will be back to see about the kabobs-on-a-pizza thing. I'm gonna make him stick to it, and if it's okay but not totally what it could be, I'll continue to gently push him in the direction of a full-fledged curry-sauced, cardamom-flecked, kabob pizza. I tried to nudge Norm's on Marysville Blvd in that direction, but they lost the one inspired kitchen employee....I think it might've been a parole violation.

The new guy running Faisal's is very nice, but difficult to communicate with, and he doesn't seem to know what he's doing yet. I hope he hires someone new for the front.

This thread  made me think of two dives I've wanted to try. Whitey's Jolly kone, and hefty burger's.

Might be worth the drive, Lou's on watt. (north highlands) has what some consider the best burger around, get the double cheese with bacon.   Any pregnant or munchie laden people should love this place.

Hefty Burger is a charbroiler, and not very much different than eating at Carl's Jr. I did like it the couple of times I went there a few years ago, but mainly because of the way they reused the chuckwagon-shaped sign that was left by the former franchise of Pioneer Chicken, and because of the unusual drama that played out among the employees then. It was hilarious to watch those dagger-stares of death shooting from the eyes of those old haggard babushkas toward the newly immigrated young supermodel-lookin' gal that was paid to just stand there and look pretty.

The entire blow-by-blow is in my review...
    yelp.com/biz/hefty-burge…

Sadly, the sign was taken down during the 2nd wave of West Sac's sign ordinance that first befelled all the cool old signs for the dozens of motels on West Capitol. That was a such a mistake. And the last time I went into Hefty Burger, there was no drama between employees at all. BORING!

I must say, though.....Now that I've just read Adonis V.'s 2-star review of Hefty Burger, I wanna go back. He says that the Mediterranean seasoning of other menu items has mixed into the burgers by virtue of sharing grill space. Adonis says that the added spice "tarnishes" the burger. I can't imagine how it doesn't improve the burger.

If your ever in the El Dorado Hills area go to the Purple Place and get their Famous Bacon Cheese Burger with bleu Cheese, normally I would tell you to get it rare but I don't know if that's done enough while your pregnant.

I was partial to the old Squeeze Inn before the original owners sold to Travis. After the Food Network spotlight, I got a sense that a few quality corners started getting cut. My falling out with them happened long before it got political.

I think the decline in quality at Jim Denny's was even more tragic. What an historical treasure the building and its neon sign is! If the burger was half as awesome as that, it'd still be great, but it is such a disgraceful ripoff.

One bygone burger I wanna recognize here is the fully loaded "Ms. Maya's Burger" at Temptations By Us which closed a couple years ago in Del Paso Heights across the street from the Grant High School baseball diamond. They also had a fried chicken sandwich which was insanely good. Man, I miss that place. If only that area wasn't such a graveyard of entrepreneurial dreams.

When time permits, I'll come up with another zipcode-specific list.

You should try out Broderick that just opened up in West Sac (yelp.com/biz/broderick-r…). You should ask them about items that aren't on their menu because they have been adding new items every week until their official opening. The bleu cheese burger that I had was huge and the bacon was cut thick.

Travis did a political ad for Dan Lundgren.  Point of fact, there is more than one Lundgren advertisement that mentions the Squeeze Inn. (the other one doesn't have Travis on camera, though).

Had the burger at Hook & Ladder (former Hangar 17 location on S and 17th.) It's not the cheapest burger in town (it's a fairly fancy place to eat by my dirtbag standards) but it was mighty excellent--they feature a "burger of the week" that changes regularly. This week it came with cotija cheese (I think that's what is was, anyhow) and a slice of persimmon.

Sure, as long as you realize that the owners of the Squeeze Inn support Lundgren and his policy of no abortions for women, even in the case of incest and rape!

I'm amazed how folks got all tizzy over Leatherby's and their support of Prop 8, while nobody is boycotting the Squeeze over their politics.....
